BACK TO THE HIGHLANDS! | Climbing Stac Pollaidh | Painting Scottish Heather in Watercolour | Ep31

  • Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
The heatwave is over and we thankfully have some cooler weather for walking. This week, we're heading back to the Scottish Highlands to climb a mountain that I have wanted to do for ages - Stac Pollaidh ('Stack Polly') in the beautiful area of Assynt.
I had actually hoped to climb this mountain last year, before She Walks, She Paints even existed! However, the weather wasn't on our side and we didn't make it, so fortunately for you, it had to wait until now!
I was so happy to be back climbing mountains in the rugged highland landscape - I'm sure you can see it in my smiling face!
The hills at the moment are covered in a purple haze of heather, which is incredibly beautiful - both from a distance and up close. I chose to paint a sprig of purple bell heather, focusing in on the tiny flowers and needle like leaves. Watch the painting process from start to finish to see how I did it.
If you enjoyed this video and you haven't already, please check out my other videos - including the three special Skye episodes, where we explore some incredible Scottish scenery. Join me again next week as we explore somewhere else in Scotland and look for painting inspiration...

Hi Sarah Edinburough, great journey with you onto the steep (very) rugged Stac Pollaidh, the sound effect of the wind blowing added the the atmosphere and as you walked through the Heather I could almost smell the damp peat underneath. Very atmospheric - seamless editing Willie 👍. Beautiful painting Sarah, the section of real time painting just shows how much love you put into every stroke of the brush. It all evokes good memories so, thank you. xx

  • @evelinestrebinger7091

I discovered your videos just recently, having had a little operation on my right hand, so that I could not draw or paint for a month and stayed indoors having lots of time. It brought joy to my days to see the scottish landscape - not filmed by a professional advertising company, but by a sweet young and lively woman taking a walk with her dog. As I love being in nature myself I particularely enjoyed the stops and focus on flowers, animals (dragonfly, newt, robin) - as I might have done it myself on a walk! Together with the relaxing music a meditation-like composition crownes by the magical moment of the outline, composition of a painting, being able to watch the progress, the shading, the contrasts and the completion! Thank you for these videos!! I thoroughly enjoy them and watch them daily! I also take photos and feel very inspired seeing you paint (very very impressed by the pineapple building, which I knew from videos about english gardens). So please keep on doing what you do - its just perfect!! Will visit your etsy shop! Greetings from Vienna/Austria from Eveline

That was so much fun! I loved that hike, thanks for taking us there. I always feel like I've been there because you show us every angle and every view. It was just spectacular. I quite literally laughed out loud when you said, "Don't worry I didn't forget about coffee and cake" because that's just what I was thinking when you said you were heading home. I felt like Jack begging for a treat! 😆 It's a good ploy, skip breakfast and then you'll have to feed him treats...smart dog. 😉 The heather painting is beautiful. I'm glad you pointed out the time it takes for each painting. You told us one time in another video and said it so casually, I remember thinking "Talk about burying the lead story!" I had no idea it was taking you so long since we see it as if it was all done at one sitting. So, I was glad to hear you say it again. People should know the amount of work that goes into one of your beautiful art pieces. And, lastly I have to comment on Willie's commentary about the deer. "She Stalks, She Paints"...that was hysterical. 😂 Okay, one last comment...I love Jack's custom labels. What a nice gift. He looks even more handsome. 😊

Jack running off by himself to go for a swim really made me laugh. He's so different from my Havanese mix who doesn't like water and wants to be carried after a while on hikes. Granted, most of our hikes have cacti hiding in the grass, but he's still a big baby. And he's short, so he gets poked in the face by the dried grass.

This was my first time watching your videos, I've just recently subscribed to Willies channel and have been wanting to see your work with his great music in the background, your lucky to have your music made on request.🤣 I love your excitement about the deer, wild deer on a hill could have been another name for my channel, except some of our deer aren't as wild as most. Your talent for painting is unreal, actually it looks very real, but you know what I mean I hope. We live in Oregon, USA where there are trees almost everywhere, and while beautiful in their own accord, there is something about the open space and geology of Scotland that is a beauty of its own. I loved hiking and climbing over rocks when I was closer to your age, now at 50, I'll happily let you do the hiking while I enjoy watching some 5000 miles away! He is such a good dog; but, he did take that dog treat away from you too quickly. Children and puppy dogs act much the same at times. Your painting is beautiful. I have never seen that type of heater before. Thank you for this video.

Thanks Arvetta! Some of the scramble bits at the top were a bit scary but we were very careful where we went 😊 Jack was very excited about his treat because he forgot about having breakfast…he was a lot more gentle with the next one though 👍

Magnificent views, how were your poor legs after all that climbing? Your painting is beautiful I really like this one. Love the music Willie just right. Oh wow Jack Spaniels you look handsome. Take care guys and thank you for sharing 👍👏❤️😍 love the deer 😂😂😂😂

Thanks Chris! We weren’t too bad after this one - it looks high but distance-wise it wasn’t too far. Plus Jack and me have been doing lots of steps in the park every day to stay mountain ready! 😀👍

Sarah and William Edinborough --- wonderful! Glorious beautiful mountains! Oh, and does your musician take requests from a part Scots who longs to be in the Highlands? It would be great to hear some of the traditional tunes from Scotland. Only if you take requests, of course.

Thanks! My musician prefers to write & play his own music (it might be traditional in the future…🤔), but I do love Scottish folk music, so you never know!

Spectacular scenery Sarah. An energetic trek for which we thank you. Jack must have been starving when you gave him that biscuit, fancied yourself fingers as desert??! Having sat on the edge of mountains in Zimbabwe, one gets the urge to step off and flap the arms; do envy the eagles.

Ahaha, thankfully I didn’t get the urge to jump into the air! Jack was very hungry yes - hence why he was so enthusiastic. He was a lot more gentle for the second biscuit 😊

How long did the walk take? Coincidentally, I watched an episode of Antiques Road Trip, & one of the sidelights was a profile of the man who mapped all the Monroes! He climbed each one but one, that one requires rock climbing skills, which he didn't have.---Ullapool was one of our bus tour stops on my 2nd trip to Scotland, & I found a bookstore & bought a book I didn't have in my library & had wanted to have!---Kool ending!

The best scenery yet! I have a similar heather growing in a planter in the garden... I got it from the horseshoe pass in North Wales I believe 🤔 I enjoyed Willie's commentary 😂

Ahh I’m sorry Rosemary! Don’t worry - we were very careful up there and I’m sure the camera makes it look worse than it actually is in real life 😊

would you ever to a tutorial on how you paint? that would be interesting to watch.

Hi Holly! I’ve thought about doing some short videos on my painting materials, but not sure if I’m going to do any full tutorials. So much of my painting is me learning as I go - I’m not sure if I have enough authority to share my techniques!

love your work. silly question, what does heather smell like? Do the different types smell different? Any way..... blessings!!!

      @shewalksshepaints  Před 2 lety

Hi Jeanne! I’m not sure if the different types smell different, but I think it’s quite a subtle scent. A bit woody and fresh, but not strong like lavender.

He’s pretty good at finding paths actually! He will usually be able to smell the route that other people have walked, although occasionally gets distracted…😅
