  • Welcome back - thanks for joining me again! Come with me this week as I explore the historic villages of Culross & Torryburn on the Fife Coastal Path. You'll be glad to know that Jack Spaniels - the craziest Sprocker Spaniel in Scotland, is back to cause mayhem and mischief along the way!
    We discover the Palace of Culross and find out the sad real-life story of an 18th century witch-hunt, when we visit the burial place of Lilias Adie.
    We explore the secret garden of an old Scottish estate and I find beautiful sunny yellow daffodils to paint back in my studio.

    Amazing how you can come to love a dog that you have only met on video. Jack Spaniels is such a special dog, his personality shines through every photographic shot of him. And, oh my.....what a handsome dog he is! Thank you for sharing him with your audience worldwide 🥰🙏🐕🇺🇸

    Jack's a spaniel - of course he loves mud and running water! The reason he hates baths is because it isn't proper water with stuff floating in it. Watching you paint I kept saying to myself "that doesn't look right" and then as you added the next bit it suddenly did. Never ceases to amaze me how folks with artistic abilities manage to create things that are so gorgeous.

    • @shewalksshepaints
      @shewalksshepaints  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks Dave! Haha yeah, I should have learnt by now that spaniels love any water except the stuff they are supposed to be in…🤦‍♀️ I often feel the same way when I’m painting - I worry that it’s not going to look right, but I keep painting and it usually turns out fine!

    Again, beautiful daffodils . The ruffled, double trumpet daffodils are what my grandfather called Petticoat Daffodils. They remind me of the many ruffled petticoats that dancers wore during square dancing, in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

      Thanks Bryce! Yes it is a bit strange seeing the train tracks there isn’t it? It hasn’t been used for passenger trains since 1930, although the coal power station still used it for goods traffic until 2016. Thankfully no trains for us to look out for nowadays!

    I work in a museum used in Outlander in Edinburgh and we get about half our visitors from it. All American as it's not so popular in the UK. Same at Doune Castle when I visited, where the Outlander audio tour is more popular than the Monty Python Holy Grail one. So this village must be heaving in the summer.

    • @shewalksshepaints
      @shewalksshepaints  Před 2 lety +1

      Yup, I think Doune Castle visitors went up by over 1000% year on year after it appeared on Outlander - it’s a crazy phenomenon!! Culross does get super busy, so I advise visiting off-season or very early in the day 😀👍

    Pretty Spring day for your outing Sarah. Happy to see Jack Spaniels in action . Culross is wondrous to see and the history fascinating. Stunning palace, would love to see inside one of those historical buildings. Willies aerial views added to the street perspective so very well. Nice memorial to Lilias Adie and explanation of her plight, well done. Video was clear that you and Jack had a very enjoyable walk, and the garden with the flowers and birds was special. Torryburn and 1200’s history is so cool. Found the talk on grave markings new and interesting. As always beautiful art work in the Daffodils painting, worth the challenge you described as the result is perfect! Looking forward to next week, and wish you the best.

      Thank you Guadalupe! I love buildings that are painted in this way - it brings a bit of sunny joy to any day 😊 The limewash or harling, is a protective coating for the soft sandstone underneath, but it was also a chance to show off how rich you were. The pigments used to colour it were very expensive, so only the wealthy could afford it.

    Hi Sarah, I am so delighted that I have found your channel. What a lovely adventure that you have shared. Thank you! I searched CZcams for someone doing just what you do because I have had a channel, myself, for about 1 1/2 years, that has much the same flavor to it. I have felt a little caught between two worlds, the one of art, and that of travel and entertainment. It has been tough to find the right niche. My reason for combining these two is that as an artist, I just can't seem to segment my artist's life into two boxes: Finding the inspiration; and then capturing it in my artwork. For me, they have to go together. What inspired you to create your channel with this marrying of ideas? I love it, and I look forward to seeing more. I would really enjoy chatting more about your experiences from this perspective. If you would like to connect over a different modality, rather than on this comment thread, let me know and I will share my contact info with you. Again, it was a breath of fresh air to find someone with a similar focus. Thank you again! - Debbie

      Thanks for both yo ur lovely comments Debbie - I’m so glad that you are liking the channel. I agree - it’s so difficult to choose between my love for the outdoors and my love of painting. That’s why I started the channel (encourages by my partner who has a channel about treasure hunting in Scotland). It seemed the perfect combination of both my passions, but I do also worry that not everyone who likes the walking will like the painting sections and vice versa! I also find it hard to integrate with others in the online communities because I’m a bit of both! So it’s lovely to meet someone else who does this 😊 Are you on Instagram? Sarah x

      Well, you describe my feelings! I will look for your partner’s channel, too. I just love seeing the countryside of Scotland. So, I wonder if we can somehow consider a collaboration that will build some strength in this niche. I just know that in this world of billions of people, there will be many that like nature and art in one video, as we do. I think the trick is just getting the momentum going. It looks like you have more than I, but my channel is growing. Let me know if you have any ideas on that topic. Thanks for writing back. Let’s keep in touch. Maybe we can start a nature exploration/art support group. Ha! 🤗

    Lovely to see Jack’s sweet face peaking out from the back seat already to go for a walk. I was surprised that the village was so quiet; you had the place to yourselves. Does the wild garlic have flowers or just the green leaves? Thanks for another beautiful Walk and painting.

      Thanks Amber! That’s Jack’s way of letting us know he wants something - usually food or a walk! We like going places like this early in the morning, to avoid most of the crowds. If you go there in the summer (from April onwards) it gets really really busy as it’s a very popular location.

    Here is why i loved this walk: my scottish ancestors were coal miners. They came to america, Pennsylvania and continued as miners. I have tracked my family back to the 1400s in some lines. Dads Ancestors were German, from near Wurzburg, Bavaria. They split from the Catholic Church and were allowing meetings of tge "Evangelisch" movement which would eventually lead them to become Lutherans, meeting at their Inn, Der Swannes. (sp, swans in German). As there were massive witch trials (Hexenprosesse, sp?) in that area, they were punished by being accused of witchcraft. Men, women, children, grandmothers, etc were tortured and hanged and then burned. My ancestress was the only survivor, because she was pregnant and thus the bishops could not kill her and her innocent child. She was tortured by leg screws, but eventually the witch trials ended and she was freed, with her little baby girl. I was reading this, using Google translator in the wee hours of the night on Ancestry, as i was recovering from my first cancer battle. Great distraction! Love from Ohio, USA , where it is supposed to be spring but is 17 degrees and snow just buried my daffodils.

      Thanks Andrea! Jack certainly seems happy with his lot haha! It totally depends on the walk and what I want to include. I find a lot of my routes on the Walk Highlands website, which has walks all over Scotland - some are circuits and some there/back again. Usually in my videos if it is the same route back, I won’t film it again, unless there is something really interesting to see 😊

    The servitude and slavery was not restricted to Scots in Scotland. People were deported from Scotland into slavery in the Caribbean and Southern US States for nearly a century. The population of the Highlands was halved over a 100 year period. I visited many sites in Georgia, Alabama and Florida where this history is told.

    I wonder how well that yellow limewash translates during wet, cloudy, gloomy weather. Does it exude joy, or yuck?!---I own all the Outlander books, but didn't appreciate the graphic nature of the transfer onto the screen. Plus, altho' I liked the chosen 'Claire', I thought the chosen 'Jamie' was a miss. ---Daffodil Day was March 22nd this year, is the symbol of the Cancer Society. I didn't see any advertisements for sales this year in my community tho'. It usually is accompanied by a cobalt blue vase with the daffodil in white on the vase.---No thanks, garlic! I have a small 'society garlic' plant, but I don't stroke it so there's no smell that makes me angry! (I hope you went to Dunnottar Castle!)
