  • Long awaited Episode 5 of the Catch and Cook and Camp series. I drove up north to Siskiyou County and visited a couple nice lakes under Mt. Shasta. After catching a nice meal and cooking the fish up outdoors, I drove east to the McCloud River. A beautiful river with areas of take and areas of catch and release only. Hope you enjoy the video!

I dont even fish and I've been staying up until like 3am watching fishing videos the past month. I finally gave in and asked my Dad if he wanted to go fishing again because he used to take me fishing a lot when I was younger when we would go camping and stuff... And we're going to go fishing for Trout and Crawdads next weekend! Thanks for the great content, and keep being awesome bro.

Now here it is, I've watched it twice already because I love the scenery. I also like it because I've been fly fishing for about a year and a half now and let me tell you I can see all the mistakes I was making when I was trying to teach myself the art of fly fishing, but don't worry you will get it in no time. You will be surprised at how many good people like the guy that helped with your setup you will run into. Most of what I know now is from good people like that. Just make sure to return the favor if you ever see someone that knows less than you, even if it's not much, teaching someone a little hint might keep them motivated enough to continue learning, instead of giving up. Thank you for uploading this awesome video that I can't stop watching keep doing what you do Matts.

flyfishing is the most worthy pursuit. when it all come together it is just amazing. most important is to not try to cast too far at first and to control your line after it hits the water. a lot of these norcal streams and rivers can be fished well with twenty feet of line out and high sticking it. add fly tying a little down the road and your set for life man. i'm a self taught fly fisher and welder homes.

Steve Stringham I agree, I can remember the first fish I ever caught on the fly. It was a tiny little brook like five or six inches. My excitement was overwhelming because I saw it come out of a little hole in the tiny creek and take my elk hair caddis. I was hooked from that moment. I've always been intimidated about tying my own flies, but I definitely will try to catch a fish this year with a fly that I tie. Thanks for the tips my welder brother hahaha

Matts -- greatly admire that you are trying to learn by trial and error, more satisfying as an angler -- some basic tips -- on your drift, you need to really look at the current and remember that the key is to get that dragless drift. Just like in the salt and all angling, the leaders and line (leader and tippet in flyfishing) are key. The fly needs to turn over at the end of the cast so that you are aware of where that fly is at any time. When those fish were rising, you may have had better luck going to the bottom of the pool and casting upstream (bringing in the line as it drifted towards you -- with just enough play in the line so that you could still raise your arm to set the hook on a strike. The one benefit of the dry fly is that just a slight tightening of the line will set the hook with the fish doing most of the work for you as it tries to swim away after the bite. The other benefit of dry fly fishing upstream is that you will not have as difficult a time mending. When there is a swift current in front of you, and you are trying to mend across that swift current, it can be a fruitless (some might say pointless) exercise. The other fly in your box that is essential for a beginner is a muddler minnow or wooly bugger (much like the bead head nymph you were fishing). These are best fished with a quartering cast upstream, then watching your drift, with a twitch or slight mend as it drifts down the slot. As it comes to the end of its swing and the lure (fly) starts to rise, the strike will often happen right at that instant (the simulation of a fleeing motion). On a large stretch of river, a great method is often to cast a wooly bugger straight across the river and strip it straight in towards you -- cross stream -- the strikes can be tremendous. You hit the nail on the head when you said you needed to stop talking and concentrate on the cast -- it does require an intense concentration -- which is why so many flyfishers compare the experience to meditative stillness. When I see you going for lingcod, you have all the right thinking for trout on the fly -- when I watch your salt vids, I am putting it in the framework of my flyfishing experience. You will eventually start to do that too once you get used to the difference in tackle -- casting line vs casting lures takes a bit of getting used to.

when your'e fishing heavy water some split shot above your nymph, the one you were using is called a Prince, is good to have to get down to the bottom thats where the fish are looking. you can high stick through the drift and watch the tip of your line as an indicator. thats a nice setup you have. you cast pretty well too. try running the line under your index finger on the rod hand for more control.

    • @Betteroffwet
      @Betteroffwet Před 6 lety

good observation on the line control with the finger - also critical on the hook set as it otherwise yanks the hook away with the extra slack...

I think it's awesome that you get so many sponsors. No doubt they work because I have never heard of Siskiyou County but now its on my list. I am retired military and my wife only has 5 years until she retires. Once our daughter is on her own we are buying an RV and hitting the road. I already fish and travel a lot. Within the last year I have fished Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and both the mountains and the coast of South Carolina. In fact I was fishing earlier today with my little girl, we both only got one. I am heading back to Tennessee at the end of March for 10 days. I also have a trip planned for her spring break in April down in Tampa and another trip planned for Oklahoma in June. I want to thank all the states that extend fishing and hunting opportunities to veterans and disabled veterans. I don't want to leave any out but I will list the ones I know. Texas, California, Missouri, Illinois, Washington, all give disabled veterans some fishing benefit regardless of state residency. So, no doubt I will be fishing those waters!!

You can't go wrong with a Rooster Tail.....EVER....in any conditions in fresh or salt bud. Keep 1/8oz and 1/4 oz black and white real Rooster Tail brand (not the knock-offs) spinners in your box and at least a half doz of each. It's the best lure you can have as a base line lure other than your jig baits. TRUST ME brother. To all the fishermen who stop and help other people out....you don't realize how much you enrich the lives of those you touch with your knowledge and just caring enough to share! Well done. Excellent video.

If u were fishing the mccloud, then your first fish was a McCloud River redband. If it was above the falls, congrats...that’s a heritage trout. For dry flies, you should add small size 16 or smaller parachute Adams, royal wulff, blue wing olives and elk hair Caddis to your fly collection. If your going to nymph fast water (indicator or tight line), you need to add some weight to your leader just above the tippet to leader connection to get the fly down to the strike zone.

Hey man, I'm a guide from Maine, I've been watching your videos for awhile and I've been watching your evolution into a flyfisherman, your cast looks awesome, you're doing it alright, but you should work on your fish id! There are tons of different color combos just for the rainbow trout alone, from Frye, to Adult they always change. And work on your fly collection! Flyfishing isn't just dry fly and nymph fishing! There are tons of options, of all types streamers are my favorite, they imitate baitfish, crawfish, etc, and often times it is the bigger fish that seek them out because they are used to burning the energy to eat a bigger meal. not just eating bugs. Flyfishing is an art, not just a hobby, it takes practice and patience. we throw a ball if we have a 3 fish day, sometimes you can't keep em off your fly, but often times its a struggle. but a fun struggle, practice makes perfect man, I have spent countless hours casting in my backyard or just going out and catching bass and sunfish to get used to the feeling, keep up the work dood!

Mend right when the fly hits the water, if you don’t have an indicator then you want to do what is called high sticking, or czech nymphing. Basically you keep your line vertical and follow the fly down stream with your fly rod. I am a self taught fly man. Taught myself by watching youtube almost 12 years ago!! You can do it!!!! Your first big fish on a fly rod is a life changer, you will be addicted. Also that was a baby rainbow that you caught.

You did an amazing job. Your fly casting is actually very good. You should be very proud of yourself. I would suggest getting a whole bunch of flies. Atleast 5x what you brought. Lots of dry flies, lots of nymphs, wolly buggers, streamers for big browns, everything. Then just learn a lot more about what food sources the trout eat on. After learning a lot about that, you are going to get good really fast. I can tell that already by just watching you fly cast. If you ever need pointers, drop me a line!

Hey man that feeling you get with your first on a fly is exhilarating. Now tie your own fly and do the same! Some tips, try high stick nymphing it will help you mend less and have better line control. Also you should have several spoils of tippet progressing in size. I would have fished 4x flouro tippet in that river. Also with your roll cast, make sure you properly load your rod by making a d loop behind you. You’ll get more distance. You can also do a single hand Spey cast for confined areas which is pretty much an advanced roll cast. I’m local to the bay too we can hit it on the fly sometime if you want.

Thank you very much for all of this nice video! With a mepps spinner (black) my older brother would catch tons of trout! Usually, as soon as he tossed into a new hole, he would get hits and catches. We're talking 12 to 18 inch trout. For him, hiking and moving around wherever necessary is his forte. Athlete. Loves to hike around white water for trout. Special non-skid Cabela's hip boots. I was never able to keep up with the guy. With his first rate vision and athlete's eye-hand coordination, he was also world class at recovering snags; to wit, he got very, very few snags to begin with.

When your fishing right behind a rock try to do a high stick technique where your rod is high enough in the air to where not much line is on the water so it can’t be caught by current and make it not look natural you will also get better control and be able to set the hook faster.

Don't be afraid to pull line out as it goes down stream if you like where its at. Maximizing your dead drift time. Flies with bigger bead heads to get down into those pools and let your nymph bounce along the bottom. You can swim your wet flies too so fishing with a nymph is more forgiving, if your drift is a little off it will still look natural. Mayflies and emerging caddis swim. I like black wooly buggers. pause and let the current straighten your line at the end of your drift. The current will load your rod a little bit for better distance unloading your rod straight upstream. Pull line out every time you will be amazed how far you can deliver it no back casting necessary. You looked good though fly fishing is allot of fun just keep messing around. Your trial and error approach is how its done. Bring Philosophy D next time and send him on a mission to collect and identify whatever insects are in and around the river. Matching the hatch is important and I'm sure he would love that. Take pictures of them and go back to outdoor pro and match them up. You're a natural. Two trout first time on the flies. Keep it up you're on fire!

No one will see this, but tips for the Sawyer MINI, make SURE you don't lose the rubber O-ring seal on the "bottle" side of the filter, or it'll leak and never work again. It's somewhat easy to have fall out when unscrewing it or not paying attention when kitting it up without a bag. Also, once you've used it, make sure to back flush it with the plunger, and if it gets below freezing, keep it against your body in an inner pocket or the minute residual water will freeze and blow up the filtration fibers. It's an incredible, VERY long-lived filter. There are others that work faster, so if that's your thing get those, just realize they won't last a tenth as long.
The full-sized Sawyer will probably outlive us, these are amazing filters. They also supposedly give filters as charity to countries around the world that have no clean water, and it seems to help. Great stuff. Never had a trouble with a Sawyer but like any tool, you have to know how to take care of it. Best wishes all

A little late, but when fish are jumping out of the water you'd have better success with a dry fly (sits on top of the water). You can also use small split shot to reach the bottom of deep pools. A black leech pattern would be great for this river. Trout like to sit in undercuts in the bank or in calmer water right next to a current. The current takes food down and the fish sits there to wait for it. That's why it's always better to approach from downstream so the fish doesn't see you and get spooked. Wild trout will get spooked by even your shadow.

Just found your channel and this is the first video I watched. We live in Shasta County and fish these waters often. Great job on your first time fly fishing.
Tips: place your split shot at the bottom of the tippet, the fly in the middle (6 inches above weight) and your indicator on top so the whole length is 1.5 times the depth of the water. That will keep your fly on the bottom in the strike zone. The fish are on the bottom of the river. You will catch more with that setup.
If you are ever back up here hit me up and I’ll take you around.
    Great job again.
