Shortly after five o'clock, life awakens at Rato Dratsang. With meditation, prayers and breakfast, the community of the over 600-year-old Tibetan monastery begins its day. More than 100 monks from Tibet, India, Bhutan and Nepal live in the simple buildings according to Buddha's teachings.
That their monastic life is still possible today is thanks in part to Abbot Nicholas Vreeland, the first Western head of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in India.
Nicholas' story begins in the early 80s, when the former diplomat's son puts his expensive custom-made shoes on the street, decides for a different life and simple sandals. The Birkenstock team visited him and met a very extraordinary person.

Such a lovely piece. Thank you for covering this and bringing awareness to the monastery. I love how you Incorporated his Birkenstocks. It was so artfully put together. I wear mine every day as well. Even on stage when I perform.

This title is utterly incorrect! He might the first Abbot of a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery... Probably IN Tibet. There are plenty of other westerner Abbotts in other schools of Buddhism.
And it's about time Tibetan Buddhism got with rest of the schools.

Not easy to grasp vajrayana. Maybe Theravada abbots, their main focus is the vinaya.

No, actually; he is the first appointed western abbot of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in exile in India, which is highly commendable.

In Tibet foreigners are strickly controlled so the question of becoming abbot is out of question. Foreign tourist are even discourage/warned not to talk to Tibetan while in TIBET.
