    Southgate changed the tone around the England team after a low ebb. But he hasn't actually coached the team better than Sven, Hoddle or Venables. • @JamesMc2051
    @JamesMc2051 Před měsícem +1

    I don't doubt that Klopp would be an upgrade (as would Pep or Ancelotti) but the thing that'd put off many is that the job can kill careers. There are two outcomes with very little in between - either you win and are a hero or you don't win and are a numpty because.......''we've got the best squad'', ''we should be winning tournaments''. This expectation gets built up because England have a good national pool of players but are they the world-beaters that we're told? I don't think they are. It's a good national pool but it isn't significantly better than other countries and it isn't without glaring deficiencies either.
    It's the most toxic job in football; with a fanbase that are, if not all of that nature then certainly numerous enough to significantly influence the entire mood of things, that are full of sensationalism, hyperbole and going from one extreme to the other on the strength of single performances. If some kid comes along and plays well for two months then they get anointed as a saviour. If some player gives ten years of good service then has a couple of months of bad form then that player will get forced out with fans saying they should never play again. I look at them and they very rarely seem to be enjoying things. I see frustration and ego but I don't see much freedom to express.
    There's a lot more to the job than picking a team and making substitutions. You need to try to make a squad with good morale despite the fact the media will launch campaigns to get some players in and others out. You need to be able to deal with the media and know what to say and what not to say. You need to be aware of club rivalries and balance that so that camps within the squad don't form. You need to somehow fix the fact that every England team I can remember struggle to keep the ball against good teams. You need to recognise that some of the better players seem to come to tournaments and are either carrying knocks, completely knackered or coming straight into tournaments after broken bones and stuff (remember Rooney and Beckham?). You need to fight for time with the squad. England are (90% of the time) all about club football and then players get thrown into tournaments, get chucked on the pitch and expected to make it happen, and 9 times out of 10 they don't look like a fluid team - whether it's Southgate, Hodgson, Eriksson, Keegan or anyone else. Yet no-one seems to see the constants (can't keep the ball, don't look fluid, playing in an atmosphere that is either one extreme or the other) so they just switch manager every so often and expect it to fall into place. There's no real long-term strategy or idea of how England are meant to play. And then, finally, there's picking a squad, team, and making subs.
    Here's a revealing thing. Who is England's best deep-lying playmaker? Every other country has one, two, three or more midfielders who sit deep and control games. England try to play without one a lot of the time. They'll have two physical players like Rice and Phillips, or Gallagher. Or they'll have a box to box player there (sometimes two!) like Lampard, Gerrard, Bellingham or whoever. Mainoo is an upgrade - granted - but he broke into the team about two minutes ago. Where is England's Xavi, Pirlo, Kroos, Modric, Veratti, Moutinho or anyone who sits deep in midfield, is comfortable in possession, is creative, who knows how to control the tempo and has the brains to know when to play fast or slow? Go around the Premier League teams and these players aren't English. Go around every other European league and they aren't there either. They don't seem to exist. Why is this? How can England control football games without that? And the fans don't even seem to look for it either. They want their big-name players in the team and to hell with whether they are actually right for what the team needs. They seem to think that the strength of their football team depends on getting as many high-rated players off of FIFA football into the same team and never mind style of play or balance or things like that.
    In summary - England are illiterate in football terms, expect the world, and have significant issues that inhibit performance again and again, no matter who is boss. Until that is acknowledged then it'll just keep happening again and again. They could win something (because worse teams have) but it'll be despite everything rather than because of it and I wouldn't sit and expect it. Previous performances don't justify that level of expectation.

    I don't fall for this idea that GS has transformed them and made them competitive, he deserves credit for some things behind scenes and bringing them together as a group, but we have better players now that is why they are getting to finals, they are big moment players saving his ass. The tactics are too negative, even against Spain we score and he is bringing on Gallagher and Tripps, are you kidding me? we had them on the back foot with the high press, finally! He wants them to sit back and Spain score and win it, that was not a fluke. Awful tactics, was the same at Boro. HAS to go. He doesn't have the know how or experience in management to turn the game, just as a defender. We need a change desperately while these players are still young enough to compete for a few tournaments. Kane was wrong for the team the way it was set up, but to play him clearly unfit is a shocking decision. Need someone who has the bottle to drop players. He needs to realise we need another level.

    Southgate has achieved a lot and changed english mentality and team spirit for the better. BUT he has reached his limit now - to go the next step and build off the good work Southgate has done we need an experienced and proven winner on the job. What an opportunity to finally get a trophy for england in 58 yrs thats what can do coaches might be thinking.
    Also if I hear Carsley etc - doing good jobs yes but at elite level, really?
    Klopp, Porchetino etc...proven winners can deal with big clubs so why not a big country...If they win something with England they become legends.
    Klopp is a likeable character and can deal with us armchair experts including the pedestrian punditry - Sir Jürgen Klopp has a ring to it.
    I wouldn't oppose it - England just doesn't have the best coaches - we have good coaches - but good doesn't win you titles.

    The players is what has made the difference for England the last 8 years and the quality of the club mangers coaching them England players who play alongside some of the best foreign players in the world at club level and with the added fact of the lack quality of the international competition in Europe the last 10 years that is what has got england to European finals. NOT Gareth Southgate or his coaching or tactics. Playing a low block no wningers a slow forward and waiting for individual brilliance to win you games is not being tactically astute and is not the qualities or traits of a top winning manager. Someone like klopp would not have to manage the England team because they already play the way he would want them to play for there club sides. What klopp has is a big enough personality and the authorite within the game to drop any star players he needs to drop to get the right balance in the team and the tactical awareness to make in game decisions at the right moments and uses all the bench at vital times to win games and trophies! We have got to European finals despite Gareth Southgate not because of Southgate simple.

    As a German its absolutely appalling to see that many individuals in british media try to justify and celebrate Southgate's achievements. It is not about placements and getting to the finals - its about the way the team plays. England matches were the worst matches to watch and they were incredibly lucky not to get knocked out earlier. They had easy draws and still managed to make it close. If they had drawn any of Spain, Germany, France or Portugal in the round of 16 they would have been eliminated on the spot. They got second but they were far from being the second best team. With that quality on the pitch you cant play that deep, slow and scared. Southgate's football these past years has been horrible to watch and I cannot understand how people can celebrate that type of football.

Southgate has done a great job with what he has. International football is very different to club football and most people don't understand this. We will be luck if we can get toanother semi, new manager will make us attacking and leave too many holes as we're not strong, just have some good players with flair, no warriors in this squad and when things get tough no-one goes above and beyond
