HP is terrible. In a recent (2022) firmware upgrade, it made sure you cannot use non-HP ink cartridges. You are going to need to downgrade your firmware. There is currently a link that will take you to that old software that you need to get your printer working again.
This just happened to me and it has absolutely turned me off ever buying ANY HP product ever again. What a crooked shady company.
I killed for example 5 pieces of HP printers cause of my angry. And this shitty rule turn me really angry like never before... totally agree with u. fuck that scammers!

Thank you so much! Note: If you have your printer setup for WiFi communication only, I had to establish a USB connection with my desktop in order to successfully downgrade the software. I wrote the person in charge of printers at HP about this issue, and I plan to file complaints with the appropriate agencies, as well as investigate participating in a class action lawsuit. HP was sued about similar issues that resulted in a class action settlement of $1.5 million in March 2023.
I've been on this for 2 hours now! Thanks for advising to remove WIFI setting and just connect via USB - Computer to Printer. I cannot believe it worked. I just don't know why everyone is becoming greedy.
I just put in the old ones, updated the firmware, then put in the non-oem.
Thanks for your update. I still cant fix my printer and nobody lists how to update on Win 10/11 most are on Macs on this thread. I will have to buy a printer just to print anything. What HP is doing violates federal antitrust laws in the US. Their action to block non HP cartridges from being used in their printers is considered anticompetitive monopolization where they try to maintain a monopoly of power and control which products can be used in their printers. This is intentional anticompetitive conduct and a clear and obvious violation of US federal antitrust law. I plan to also file some complaints.

To answer your last question of how to prevent future updates:
Settings -> Printer maintenance -> Update the printer -> Printer Update Options -> Select "Do not check" -> Click "No"

Well I went and made the mistake I bought an HP 2636 and you are right . After replacing both cartridges my printer will not work at all so I am so glad there are people out there like yourself to help us unfornate . Thank you and I will never buy another HP series printer of any kind .

Thanks for posting this. I have the same printer and got this message last week. I just got the printer out of the trash to try the update and it worked. I connected the printer with a usb cable and it worked right off. I've been using ebay cartridges since the printer was new with no issues with the ink. I'm not paying $99 for HP ink.
Seriously, I was thrown into this time waster this morning and it's thanks to you and the comments below that I managed to re-set. I was almost in tears. I couldn't stop thinking of other solutions and you are saviour. This greediness needs to stop. These companies should not get away with this. It's like rocking up at a supermarket with our own shopping bag and they refuse to bag it. You just need to stop HP. The only problem I have is because I played with my 6960 I can't print photos and I have to press another button Print even after I pressed the Print button.

It was not a pleasant surprise when I attempted to print something for an assignment. My husband and I had nearly resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to have to get a new printer. @clairebell876 I have genuine ink cartridges. And it still says it's older generation and can't be used. 2 full 952XL cartridges. Honestly, the best fix is to NEVER buy HP to begin with.

I do not know who you are Mathew but I want to say a BIG thank you for resoving this issue. HP needs to allow people to make their own purchasing desicions rather than "lock" them into buying their products. Its like a car. You can buy original or non original parts based on your budget. SUCCESS! Thank you so much! Printer had been working fine on off-brand cartridges for a year or more, and just stopped today, giving me the same error. Reverting to an older version of the HP printer firmware worked perfectly. First, turn off auto updates, as he instructed. Then, go to the link above, click your printer model, download the older firmware version and apply it. The printer will refresh, and you should be back in business. SHAME ON YOU, HP!

HATE HP! Here is how to PREVENT printer from automatically checking for updates... do the following. Click into Settings on the printer itself, go into Printer Maintenance, Update the Printer, and make sure that: Printer Update Options is set to "Do not Check" Thank you for above, it fixed my issues Matthew.

Awesome, worked a treat on my HP 7740. Many thanks and I am fully with your comments in the video. My printer was *this* close to exiting the building at high speed. Vertically. Kudos also to the sites offering firmware downgrades. HP's line on this should be illegal under EU laws on restrictive trading practices.

After many hours searching and frustration about this issue for our HP OfficeJet 6958, your instructions/video were awesome and worked perfectly, with a little trial and error (but only due to my impatience with not following with your steps.). I also realized that I had to use a Windows PC to download the firmware: didn't work on my Mac. Thanks so much, Matthew. Also enjoyed your frustration: reflective of mine!
You don't have to go through all of that. If you still have you original ink cartage take the chip off and put it on any other one . Its has 3 little pegs that sit in 3 little hole's. That's what I have done all the time. And it works just great.

So what I did is, i had a set of cartridges that did work in the printer but the new ones I ordered didn't so I got my pick set and pulled the chip out, there is a little plastic thing that goes around the chip with legs on it that go in the holes. then I switched them over. it was very easy and it worked.

I’m having the same issue now. I’m turned off for life. I will not be purchasing anything from HP again. I don’t like being forced to do anything that I don’t want to do especially when it comes to spending my money.
Thank you! This just happened to me. I followed your instructions and found the website with the downloads - downloaded the version and yes, my printer now works. And, I found in the printer to stop updates so hopefully this doesn't happen again.

On the printer display:
Click Settings / Setup icon > Printer Maintenance / Tools
Update the Printer > Printer Update Options > Do Not Check
On the question "Do you want to turn on Printer Updates?" select "No" to off printer updates.
Then press Home

Thanks, worked for my HP 6968 printer. Reset to factory settings like he shows in this video, then if you have HP Smart loaded on you computer you go to Printer Settings, then Advanced Settings, click printer update, then at the bottom you can select Do no check for updates and Apply and be sure to select "No" on the warning screen so it will not turn on automatic updates.
Printer #7740 rolling back the firmware worked. Also allowed to cancel auto updates. Thank you for the fix
Worked on HP 6962 printer. Windows 10. Used a USB cable - would not work over the WiFi. Ran the downgrade - the LCD screen turned off but the power button stays on; LCD screen comes back on with a green screen with numbers 12345; after complete the printer restarts. Told me "non HP ink blah blah blah"; click OK on the screen. Print a test page. Done. Thank you Matt!!
I am enrolled in their ink program and they did this to me! They are the ones that sent me the cartridge! The only thing I can do is buy another printer as I don’t think I can manage what you did!
The ink cartridges in the Instant Ink program are THEIRS. If you decide to opt-out of their subscription, you simply return their cartridges and purchase your own. Your ignorance is not their fault. I haven't purchased ink cartridges in years.

This worked for me, THANK YOU!! HP does really suck. My work sent me an HP printer so have been using that, but I bought the same cartiridges you had, and it just refused these. I always used Brother before, and never had these problems. How do you prevent software from updating? Otherwise we have to do this every time we install new cartridges? I guess the other option is to turn off wifi so it can't update itself.😄
If you can peel off the chips from the original cartridges and glue them in place of the ones on the replacements, that works. Otherwise, if you can load an old firmware onto the printer and make sure it never updates again, you shouldn't have the problem again.

Though I had an issue with some of the cartridges. I could choose: every of the colour, and a different brand black, or a different brand yellow.
For some reason yellow didn't work correctly with the black, but I suspect the (cheap) cartridges are the culprit of that issue.

Thank you, restoring to the factory setting did not work, but setting up LD firmware driver resolved the issue. You saved me at least $300.

Thank you Sooooooooo much I was ready to throw this printer in the trash I'm so sick of the way HP tries to control you after the sale. Lower your ink cost and we will buy it but it's to high that is why we buy generic ink.
That works! Once the laptop was able to find the printer it downloaded a lesser version of firmware and it started printing. Make sure your laptop has the printer driver loaded on it. Then you're good to go.
This worked for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710! After installing turn off updates go to Settings- printer maintenance- update printer - printer update options- Select do not check.

amazing ! I tried via wifi but was not working but then I tried the ethernet cable and it worked after 3/4 goes, it suddenly the printer screen went black and it done the update back to the old Firmware.

I have the top end 9025 dual paper tray everything printer I got used low hours on eBay cheap. I had aa 9015 before but it didn't have the dual paper trays etc so I wanted the best version. It worked great for 6 months then the printer shut down because the instant ink bill hadn't been paid. The full cartridges were no longer usable because of it. I tried swapping the chips from my old carts, a couple worked, a couple didn't, so I reset the printer and loaded the older non locked firmware and disabled updates. It now prints fine with any cartridge, OEM or not, I feed it. It will complain about being a non original cartridge but you can override and it works. The firmware update is lock kinda hidden and I think once you run an update the disable option is greyed out till you reset it again.
Just don't opt for Instant ink when you first setup the printer and don't allow it to auto update and you should be fine, otherwise you have to reset it and downgrade the firmware.
I really like the printer, it can sit for months, then print quickly just fine. The print head is easily removed to be cleaned, and you can replace it, you can't with most other printers.
I really want to get a good ink tank printer but so far HP doesn't make one to the level of my printer and the Canon one I'm considering with similar specs and a removable print head is stupid expensive.

P.S. It's nonsense that HP said the new firmware *will* allow non-HP cartridges if the 7740 was manufactured before Dec 1, 2016. If previous firmware allowed non-HP cartridges, then they can make any new firmware support it too - regardless of manufacture date.

I’ve wasted FAR TOO MUCH of my precious Saturday trying to undo HP’s bullshit! No one has the 9022 firmware downgrade version that I need and all attempts to use the snake oil remedies DO NOT work (because it has nothing to do with overriding the firmware update that HP made unbeknownst to me). Do you think I’m ever buying another HP product? I’ll sell the printer to someone who absolutely has to use overpriced HP cartridges and move on to a more consumer friendly maker. I’ve already gone to numerous HP printer Amazon review pages and written a warning to those considering buying their units.

Here's how to disable automatic firmware updates for an HP 6970 printer using the HP Smart app:
Click the printer image on the home screen
Click Advanced Settings
Click Tools
Click Printer Updates and then Firmware Updates
Select Do not check for updates and click Apply
You rock man... it was easy thanks to you!!! They actually asked on my download if I wanted the Auto U D's! Pushing the right corner of the error message gets you further each time until you get to the update/ install I went all the way back to basic settings on my comp and it picked it up right away. I think it made it easier for the printer to find the hook up. 1st time for me Great job and thanks'

I found the download on Reddit. It worked great by connecting to the printer by USB. I turned WiFi off on my laptop and on the printer.
I am on their Instant Ink programme, and it suddenly said 'non HP circuitry detected' this morning even though it's their cartridges in the machine! Turned it off and turned it on again and it worked!

Same thing with cartridges happened to me. But also, it was not possible to scan via wifi without HP account and sending scans to some HP cloud somewhere. Hence i scan ID's there is no way i am going to send any ID or any of the private or company documents to some unknown destination. Their official solution was to connect printer to PC via cable so only i can scan on my pc. Also, their quite simple scanning software which allowed various quality settings and document scanning page by page stopped working.
So the HP6950 went to recycling and i bought canon MB 2150. Turned it on, deactivate updates and then connect it to wifi. Works great, cheaper cartridges and printing overall. Simple.
Goodbye HP and never come back.

That was the right solution. As for the scanning issue, I have been reduced to scanning documents to a USB drive which works fine.

Totally agree. Never do the software on your printer. All the do is reject the new ink cartridge you buy to save money. It’s like a iPhone if you don’t have the newest version then some apps don’t download lol. 06/27/2024 here time 1:59am

Thanks. Downgraded HP OfficeJet Pro 6975 to firmware for HP OfficeJet Pro 6970. Printer now works with 3rd party ink. HP wants more for a set of 902XL cartridges than I paid for the printer. Ouch!

As someone who works in IT who's workplace bought these heaps of shit from HP (Horrible Products):
This is a good method of getting aftermarket cartridges to work but it is a bit risky.
If it goes wrong you can hard brick the printer.
A safer option if you don't mind no ink levels is swap the chip from the OEM cartridge to the aftermarket one. (Yep, if you've already thrown the OEM you're outta luck :/) On the HPs at work you have to break the plastic on the cartridge as the chip is molded in there deliberately so you buy HP's overpriced crap. Once you get it out you can swap it over to the aftermarket unit and you're all good to go.
From experience this video is 100% correct and HP are a disgrace. Imagine you buy a car yet can only fill it up with petrol at the dealer with fuel that's 2-3x more expensive than everywhere else, that's what it's like lmao. Buy Brother laser models if you can they don't have this shit. HP are been facing a class action for pulling this shit on their customers.
