This broadcast aired the night before my Dad passed away from cancer at Evanston Hospital on 4/22/1987 when I was just 7 years old. A day that obviously changed my life forever.
I daily struggle with the obsession of going back and doing it all again. Maybe I’m not alone in this

Look forward mostly,sometimes it can be good to look back. Nostalgia is like ice cream, it’s great from time to time but too much will kill you. It’s fun to remember but be careful of living in the past(you knew less back then😜). May your future be the best✌️
I like the commercials in this. I'm from Omaha Nebraska and have lived in Chicago since like 91 or something. So I remember seeing a lot of these people even in the early '90s. This kind of stuff just takes me back to the day.
The Swatch commercial at 1:35 is incredible. "Swatch watch! Movin' faster & faster! Swatch watch!" lolol
RIP John Drury. After seeing what my father went through the last few years of his life with Lewy Body Dementia, which acted similarly to ALS like Drury had, I can easily imagine how hard it had to have been for his family to go through that. Drury is forever missed.
Interesting you mention that, because an iconic figure in New York TV news, Bill Beutel who was long associated with sister station WABC Channel 7, also had Lewy Body Dementia in his last years. I'm sure the same sentiments you mentioned, would have applied to his loved ones.
WABC also had a courtroom sketch artist, Marilyn Church, whose work now sits in the Library of Congress.

Actually Floyd Kalber left WMAQ-TV in '76 for NBC NEWS in New York and came back to Chicago in '84 joining WLS-TV.
A news report that Mr. Greenjeans has passed at the age of 77. Jerry Taft would live another 33 years after this broadcast, passing away in July of 2020…… at the age of 77

The news wasn't as flashy back then as it is now. That's kind of a nice thing back then.
Listen on the opening, and you'll hear the billing being reversed from what it usually was then-- "Jerry Taft for Steve Deshler on weather," and "Tim Weigel with sports." The reason I say that is because usually the weatherman would be billed "with weather," and the sports man "on sports."

Didn't know the Bears was trying to build a stadium on Chicago's Westside back then. Fast forward to now(2022) they about to move to Arlington Heights and build there own stadium...
It’s interesting that the homicide rate in 1987 was pretty similar to current rates and not one mention of it.

big jim silenced my uncle, we constructed a ten foot horse with a statue of big jim on it in the Dirkson federal center, there was a foot peddle with a recording, the whole art exhibit was shut down by someone , i wonder who,, so big jim on the horse was never to be
