    I'm not a football fan. I've tried to like it, but it's just not my thing. With that being said, football is one of the greatest cultural products of the working class and it brings enormous joy and a sense of community to the working masses. That makes football something worth defending and preserving. Unfortunatelly, not all socialists see this importance and treat football as something trivial at best or reactionary at worst. Also, I hope that football comes home later today! The english working class certainly deserve it!

    • @SocialistSwann
      @SocialistSwann  Před 2 lety +7

      Absolutely spot on, it’s a huge part of our communities and has to be defended. A lot of the ultra left anti fun crowd sneer on working class people for liking football and then wonder why workers will never support their sects.
      Glad to have your support anyway, time for the lads to bring it home!

Well, today, football turned from the working class sport to the capitalist entertainment. I will watch tonight the final match of the Euro 2020, keeping in mind that profit still turns around. Not a big fan of soccer. Huge gaa fan here in Ireland. Gaa is an amateur sport where you play for your local club and if good enough for your county. What drives the sport is local pride, county pride and local and inter county rivalry. Soccer in GDR sounds like that which is one of the main reasons why I love the GAA

    One of the worst things of futebol today is that the only thing that matters is money, so clubs make anything for money, including picking up players from elsewhere in the world (just look at the French selection haha). This makes that the futebol clubs end up having less connection to the people of that land or even of the country

    I really enjoy your channel, though differ on some of your arguments. Well done on putting across your thoughts on the most fascinating of topics. I swam against the DDR and its swimmers many times . My sporting hero was the great Roland Matthes, arguably the greatest DDR sports person. The flipside was the actions of the Stasi with Plan 14:25 that institutionalised cheating and drug taking, though I hold the athletes totally innocent.

    Hi (I'm not sure if anybody still watch this, but anyway)
    You're wrong about connection between clubs and workers places. In old social-democratic world of Eastern Europe sport and politics were strongly connected. And having strong football team was one of the way to present one's power and influence. So yeah, ideas were really good - to have only amateur teams with workers on the field. But in reality those "hours on railway" were fictional, especially in higher leagues. So guys were training like professionals, with payment officialy for work in factory, but in reality they've never saw their work place. And could focus only on football. This is one of the reasons why olympic teams of DRs were so successful and, except few, have no importance in World Cup nor Euro. Those were essentially the same teams, with professional sportsmen, but able to compete with real amateurs from Western world.
    So well, story of heroes going from work to training and able to compete with professional players, is beautiful, but false when speaking of teams of Oberliga :)

      Researchers have looked through the Stasi archives and found 0 evidence of March fixing or of bribing officials. No ref has said they were intimidated too. Dynamo Berlin dominated for 10 years because they were one of the biggest teams with an effective scouting system. We don’t say the Bundesliga is rigged because Bayern keep winning it.
      About the Olympics I said they were doped but football was spared from it. Unlike west Germany which doped its players for 3 World Cup Finals but you don’t hear that do you

      Andy McDougall’s book ‘the people’s game’ has a chapter covering Dynamo Berlin and concludes that there was no formal Stasi interference beyond personal biases from refs. And he is an anti communist historian who has no love for east Germany so if that makes him more trustworthy than me that’s cool. Also radio GDR interviewed a Dynamo Berlin fan who also talks about the controversy
