Well in the comics the long walk is not mandatory, it is one of the many choices a retiring judge can make. they can still work for the justice department as either administration desk job, an instructor or if elected before retirement a member of the justice department council. Or can leave the justice department and be a citizen again.
Robdc I will take... the Long Walk...bringing justice, to a landscape without any form of Law... In a world without rules, there is only one rule.. “Might...Makes....Right”.
This movie may have not been the greatest (though it was fun) but it did have some good scenes. This one stands out as these cadets who previously had been laughing at Dredd's joke were suddenly hit with the full weight of what their chosen path expects of them when they hit the streets and if they make it to old age.
Thing is, I’d have to double check, but I know in at least the comics most Cadets were either clones or adopted into the academy system with the intention of being raised to be Judges at a very young age, like toddlers at the oldest for recruits (sort of like the Jedi but even more morally dubious and in some areas, more cult like if Dredd’s nigh zealot level of devotion to the law didn’t make that obvious), how much of an option they’d realistically have is up for debate. Also in comics at least you did have the option of retiring and joining the civilian population (admittedly how long a former Judge would last outside of system is up for debate, as criminal gangs might see them as prime targets for revenge/building their reputation, especially as a Judge could also be fired for breaking the rules they live by, so some Judges might decided to hold off a bit before going to catch any criminal going after you). You also could just take an admin position or go full time as a teacher in the academy, thought as this movie showed the Long Walk was still always on the table so long as you were still a Judge.
Incorrect sentencing is an automatic fail. Disobeying a direct order from your assessment officer is an automatic fail. Losing your primary weapon or having it taken from you is an automatic fail. You ready, rookie? Your assessment starts now. (Judge Urban to Judge Sly)

The training to be a judge is 15 years. 13 years if you're exceptionally good. Judges are either cloned from proven genetic stock or are recruited typically at the age of 5. Any failing during their rigorous training is likely to lead to expulsion. Only 2 out of 7 cadets graduate.
Wow, their retirement policy sucks.
For real. Hope they have a better dental plan though. That helmet doesn't cover the mouth.

Dread's uniform when not wearing the armor and helmet reminds me of Alliance Officer's Dress Blues from Mass Effect.
