- It's finally time to go full Maersk fanboy! I can't tell you how much cheaper it was than trying to find three sets used. As the project progressed I really feel I prefer the dark azure color. I like the color, no shame in using other blues. Like you said you can get matching stickers for the LOGOs. Great project!

Probably the best train Lego has ever made, definitely best diesel locomotive. It’s for a reason this train is so loved! Another great mod from an existing Lego train set. Now the question is, when are you diving into MOC’s. You know you’re getting closer 😂

I love the sd40 design and sadly the Norfolk Southern only had one in Maersk livery - 3329. But that doesn’t stop us from making more

Thanks! While I may have regretted selling my original Maersk train I think I've more than made up for it now. The video next week will show the rest of the project with the wagons, containers and stickers. It's quite the sight to behold with it all together 😁

Thanks! With the Studio renders I wasn't quite sure, but once I built them IRL I think dark azure was the perfect choice for me 😁. As long as some people find the info useful or the video entertaining the work is well worth it
I got this set for Christmas the year (or directly after) it came out.
Sadly, its presently dispersed between 2-3 massive tubs of loose LEGO.
Im sure it will take countless hours to sift through it all just to find the parts, but oh boy do these videos make me want to.
The Maersk train really is a thing of beauty 😍, It may well be worth the effort. Just put on a movie and go to town pulling parts 👍

I tried several more in color options in Studio, there are some really good ones. A friend recommended dark turquoise and it looks pretty sweet. I talked about it more in the next video in the series but the Studio file has all of the dark azure pieces in step 2. Which makes it super easy to see how other colors would look and if the parts are available in that color

The best diesel locomotive of Lego. As a huge Lego Maersk fan I have a couple of them. And more Maersk mods as supplement to this train set. So it was awesome to see your video.

I amanged to get a Maersk train with an incomplete locomotive at a yard sale years ago, which funny enough has all the Maersk blue pieces. It's just the roof over the engine compartment I am missing.

OMG, just eyeballing a used set in my region with heafty price I might add. Excellent video :D Considering the recolor to matcha CSX yellow-blue combo as the 60052 that I managed to get a set from Germany.
Thanks! Yeah it would have cost a fortune for me to try to build these in Maersk blue or from buying sets. I see deals on them every once in a while but most are priced crazy high
When I was building the BMR stuff I bought lots of tubing to cut and it is amazing when shorter lengths are much more expensive - usually because they come in that size like the Maersk. Some Lego sets you had to cut to length anyway - so cutting is fine - even for the “fiber optics” - Lego fibers are thick lol
Even if I had try to buy 24L tubes there's barely enough for sale in the US to get 12 and I would have had to pay for shipping like 6 or 7 times 😅

I think what confuses some people is that Powered UP! was originally called Power Functions 2. No idea why the name was changed, but you sometimes see the original name in early articles involving the newer hub.
Yeah Lego really lost its footing when trying to name this system. It has many shortcomings, like very short wires with no official extension cables, but I do like that they use the same connectors as Mindstorms. The problem is now we have motors / hubs that are called Control +, WeDo 2.0, Mindstorms and PU but are basically the same thing 😅

i recolored in dark bluish grey for the maersk and made 20 containers to go with it i wanna make more container cars sometime this year

Just FYI, you can reduce some of the friction on that technic style bogey with white lithium grease. It's what Nerf uses inside of their Nerf guns and it's plastic safe.
I haven't tried lubricating them myself, but it is an option. I know others use ball bearings for those as well

Been thinking about making one in red.
Maybe one day, at this point it would be behind many other projects. Really I want to focus more on MOCs and mods of builds from other Lego fans. If I do I would definitely look into other color options

I'm not sure if Distant Signal has given an explanation for why distributed power is a thing, so here ya go:
99% of rail equipment on North American mainlines are equipped with AAR knuckle couplers (there are several exceptions, mostly stock European rolling stock like CalTrain & TEXRail's Stadler Flirt units, the DMUs used for NCTD Sprinter service between Oceanside and Escondido, California, and the Via Rail Renaissance fleet (intended to be used for services through the Channel tunnel from the UK that never materialized) used on Océan trains between Montréal and Halifax). The AAR knuckles are rated for about 650,000lbs of force, which is less than the tractive effort of a specific number of EMD SD-70ACE/GE GEVO locomotives you'll find hauling mainline freight trains (can't remember if it's 4 or 5), meaning if a train uses more road units at the front than the limit, the tractive effort of all the locomotives will rip the couplers apart, so any train requiring more than the limit must have the extra units distributed throughout the train
I think he covered DP pretty well, stress on the couplers was definitely mentioned. It's also really cool that the locomotives can be controlled separately when cresting a grade. Thanks for adding some more to the explanation 👍
I was lucky enough to get the set when I was younger and never took it apart, one of the few survivors. Then lucky enough to find someone selling just one of the engines in my area. Still sitting on the shelf next to me.
Missed out on this set back in the day, at one point I looked into bricklinking just the locomotive but that would have cost more then I paid for the 60052.
So what I did instead was modify 60052's locomotive: it's extended to maersk length, copied the bogies and changed some details (for example I removed the opening doors)
Came in at $20 for the additional parts if I remember correctly (includes shipping)
Used to be on mocpages but that site is long gone, should still have the files so I could put it on rebrickable
Also took inspiration from the horizon express bogies and modified 60051 to have less wheels.
Both modifications come with a warning though, neither has seen much track time so I don't know how well they will hold up over time. (Just never had the space for a train setup.)
I may do some modifications to the 60052 locomotives in my collection, they don't look quite right next to the other locomotives I'll be building based on the Maersk loco. If you do post the mods to rebrickable I'd like to see them. If you are a discord user your welcome to join ours, we love to see that kind of thing
7:28 those style locomotives have doors on the front left and back right of the cab, if you left that piece uncut it would not be in the way of anything except for the paint scheme
Yeah that was one of things I said and then later I wondered why 😅 I guess I've used the 60052 locomotives too many times
My favorites from this designer are a tie between 7207 and 60051. Now I'm super curious what he worked on at mega bloks, though the timeline puts him before the halo line which is primarily why I'm a mega fan
Ohh that Fire boat looks awesome! I do love the 60051 as well, I think it's one of the best looking modern passenger trains. I have one extra car for mine, but wouldn't mind a few more 😁. I can't say I looked very hard but I am also curious what he worked on while at Mega Bloks. Thanks for the response, I guess I never thought much about Lego designers until recently when researching for videos. I'm sure they don't mind the recognition either 😀
This is how I learned there's no cheap transparent 3L bars, would have probably made a good alternative to the fibre otherwise.
I wonder if 65578 (bar with angled stud) is able to do the same job. It'd have to be the part locking in to the underside of the turntable base, definitely not long enough to run through the round plate underneath
Yeah I've had a few people ask about 3l bars in trans-clear, looks like they are only in 4l. For myself I have tons of fiber optic cables, works just find for me 😁
I personally would probably go with dark red or dark blue.
The Studio file included has all of the dark azure parts in step two so it's easy to try different colors. It will be covered more in the video next week. BrickStickerShop has the Maerk stickers in dark blue for anyone that wants to go that route

That flex tube for the rails you can buy non official in huge amounts for very cheap. The official parts don't even say Lego on them anyway.
That's true, I haven't tried it myself. I've just had so many experiences where people offer a cheaper alternative and it is far from the "same thing" like they say. I might give it a try at some point
Maybe I didn't catch this, but how much did the parts cost for one locomotive? This is by far my favorite Lego locomotive and I've been thinking about ordering parts for this engine for a long time. Just curious about the cost because my brick link isn't working.
There is no way I can give an estimate. No one store has all the parts and inventories change all the time. Prices vary widely on parts as well as shipping costs. It is pretty expensive to build a single locomotive (over $100 easy) but I wouldn't recommend just buying all the parts. My video "How to build Lego My Own Train Locomotives in 2023" goes in more depth with how I do it (it's also mentioned briefly in the next part in this series which will be public tomorrow). I create a wanted list and then check off every part I have in my collection already. Just a single part can change which stores you would need to order from. I put a lot of time into ordering parts but it saves me a lot of money in the long run. I often order common train parts in bulk when I find good deals. Another factor is if it will be a static model on the shelf or if it will use 9v, PF or PU system to power it. I have plenty of tips for saving on those parts in my haul videos. Hope that helps!

This has been asked a few time. There really isn't a way to give a good estimate. It depends on what country you are in and what parts are available at what price. The fewer Bricklink stores the better to save on shipping. I also had quite a bit in my Lego collection already. I'd love to be able to give an estimate but I just don't think it would be accurate
So, the main part is missing - how much was it?
There's really no way to give a good estimate. In my orders I always added extra parts to add to my inventory or parts for other projects (there is a haul video associated with this video to illustrate this). It's very unlikely a single Bricklink store would have every piece necessary to build even a single locomotive and costs will vary widely depending on a persons location. I couldn't in good conscience give a dollar amount or even a loose estimate because it would be wrong the majority of the time. The answer to the question "how much did it cost?" is simply "way less than trying to buy official 10219 sets"

Lego needs more US units like the 70mac
For sure, I would love to see more creator expert train sets in the future. Although in an interview with Jamie Berard (designer of the Emerald Night and Horizon Express) he didn't sound too confident in that happening.
I only recently learned the power up battery pack is a micro controller and now Im really upset there is only 2 I/O.
There's always the Technic hub with 4 ports, but it is substantially larger than the city hub. Not really suitable for trains in 6 wide
Lego needs to do more steam locomotives.
I think most Lego train fans would whole heartedly agree, I'll build some steam engines eventually. So far it's just been the My Own Train steam locos
5:40 you could've just used a transpartent clear 3l or 4l bar piece?? same functionality but its plastic and ur not cutting that piece up.
I've been asked this before, looking on Bricklink the 3l bar piece doesn't come in trans-clear. The 4l bar would be too long and stick out on the top. For me I like using the fiber optic cable, I have plenty so cutting one doesn't bother me.

It is a very expensive set. My understanding is Lego isn't going to do any more Maersk sets so they will never get cheaper in the future as that color was exclusive to them. Hopefully this video series will help others who want to build these locomotives and not take out a loan 😅. There are several color options and they all look pretty good
He should turn one or two of those locomotives into cabless locomotive
They do exist but rare
I have thought about making a cabless locomotive at some point, If I do I'll probably base it on a real one

Just giving a thumbs up doesn't alert the commenter that I've seen the comment. I respond to most comments anyway but I still like to give comments hearts. It is also beneficial to a creator since the commenter will have a notification later on from a given channel which may encourage them to come back and watch more videos. It's a win-win.
