- Warren Zevon describes meeting Bob Dylan
July 17, 1987 - Late Night with David Letterman
May 25, 2000 - BBC Radio 1
Bob Dylan playing harmonica on The Factory, from Warren Zevon's 1987 album SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE: • Bob Dylan Plays Harmon...
Bob paid Warren the ultimate tribute by playing several songs of his live each night on his 2002 when Warren was dying from cancer. I saw one of those shows and it was very powerful.
In case no one else has said it here, remember to live by Warren's words..."enjoy every sandwich."
I thought it was really funny that Warren said about Dylan “He invented my job.” Letterman didn’t laugh and the audience was silent. I laughed.
It sounds like Letterman is into Dylan but he didn't get the job reference, Dylan is very underrated guitar player.
@@pmbbmp True.

Sure Dylan was influenced by Woodrow Guthrie, but his impact on music, subsequent generations and those who were inspired by him far surpasses Guthrie and everyone else. The Beatles had a similarly enormous impact but they were a group. For singer-songwriters no one else comes close.
I don't think the remark, rendered with Zevon's typical dry wit, was intended to get big laughs. It was just his way of complimenting Dylan and stating the obvious.
I was lucky enough to see Dylan play the Wiltern in L.A. in 2002 after Zevon's fate was sealed and had been made public.
He paid tribute by covering Accidentally Like a Martyr, Lawyers, Guns and Money and The Mutineer.
Zevon was later quoted as saying having Dylan cover his songs almost made dying worthwhile.
"Enjoy every sandwich."
Yes, letterman missed out😮😅
RIP Warren. What a great talent
The shit has hit the fan
RIP Warren Zevon. He is sorely missed.
I met Bob Dylan one night. I really didn't want to bother him but my friend who was a good friend of Bob's said to me "How many other times are you going to get the with chance to meet Bob Dylan"? So I went up to Bob and said "I'm a friend of Pete's and as much as you don't want to meet me, I wish I didn't have to meet you" Bob actually smiled and said "You really hang out with that guy"?.
That's a really funny story! Thanks for sharing. Dylan has a pretty good sense of humor, though very dry sometimes.
That's the size of it. Joan Baez have me cinnamon cake. She was a peach.
@@clydenolet736 Damn, I actually would have something to ask Joan about. I always wondered what she thought about Judas Priest's version of "Diamonds and Rust". I heard that the reason Bob distanced himself from Joan is that she was trying to drag him into being part of the social movement back then. Take care.
@@laudanum669 I asked her about Tom Waits because of her cover of 'day after tomorrow' - she hammered down hard on 'freight train' but she reminded me of everyone's grandmother. Very sweet woman and gave me cinnamon cake 😁
If your gay we understand.
I saw Zevon at the Passaic Theater in NJ 1982 still my favorite show of all time. I’ve seen a lot of shows lol he just put so much into it 👍
I love the Factory! I had no idea Dylan played harmonica on the track but now it makes so much sense.
Yes, perfect sense. No time for chit chat. He's got to get to work punching out Chryslers in the factory.
Warren left us way to soon! He lived the Magic of Music! I've seen it, and it's great. Farewell...🎶🎵🎶
I can't say that Warren was a close friend of mine but we shared several backstage discussions and he once phoned me at home and asked permission to sing one of my songs at NYC's Bottom Line. His death from mesothelioma left me deeply saddened.
Yes… a huge loss, like so many 🤷🏻♀️- Nice complement from a songwriter of his standing…😊
What's the song? Can we hear it somewhere?
Thank u Dave for giving Warren a job when he needed one..Warren had many who said they were his friends...You were one who showed u were with actions and not just words..RIP Warren Zevon.
Zevon, so under appreciated especially on Classic Rock Radio. Although I'm sure he'd say that it's all Sentimental Hygiene! We miss ya Warren.
This is the best thumbnail of all time. Need to add John McEnroe to it
Ayuh.
And Springsteen for the rough one : )
Warren knew so many artists.
Oh how I miss Warren.....
dude was the best i cry everytime i see his letterman stuff, real rock n roll authenticity
RIP Warren.
Excellent editing and the side by side photos are a kill. ☮️
Dave was slow catch on to the 'he invented my job...' line.
Awks
I knew Bob played harmonica on “The Factory,” it’s in the song credits. I’d have let him play lead guitar too, he’s Bob Dylan for cryin’ out loud.
A lot of Bob Dylan's songs are timeless..."It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"

he kicks ass on the harp on the Factory
"Keep Me In Your Heart For A While"
I saw bobby D and the GD pull this out a few times. The crowd loved it.
I stood about a foot away from Bob Dylan and he looked me in the eye like he was open to me saying hello, so I just played it cool and said nothing so he walked away.
True Love Tends to Forget. ♥️💋♥️ The sun is shining and all is well.
Bob is above all songwriters. That being said, there are many who followed him, and done so successfully.
Keep me in your heart for a while
Love Bob
Great Tom waits impersonation here
The video book - or an extended 'super-cut' : 'On Meeting Bob The First Time' would be great to watch. I've seen a few which have all been positive and rammed full of humour and intrigue haha - there must be many others. I wonder if anyone sees this as a challenge :)) (accompanied by transcripts of course?)
Mr. D. I saw the photo of you and your buddy in red head bands and eye glasses. It is good that I edit my writing, because I noted that I had omitted the "gl" in
glasses.
Thank you kindly, Passport. I'll be thumbs up number 410, if you please.
His vocal cadence reminds me a lot of Robbie Robertson
♥️
Warren zevon is operating a little above everybody else's head here.
Warren never gave up the smokes. I think maybe that Bob did although somewhat recently
holy cow, never realized that Warren Zevon's speaking voice sounds an awful lot like Al Franken!
and Harrison Ford!
Fraken...ha...what an absolute insult to Mr Zevon.
That picture of bob Dylan is hilarious
Sentimental hygiene 1987
Why didn't Dave know what he meant by "He invented my job?'
Sometimes
Didn't know Harrison Ford wore a head band.
ZZ Tops !
Songwriters are great ....... See Tom Waits and Dylan then go down that rabbit hole and pack a bag
Lmao. I thought Warren's joke was funny but Dave apparently didn't really get it. IMO he really was better at guitar than Dylan though. Warren was sort of like Prince in that he could switch between different instruments and surprise you with his proficiency at them all. RIP to the excitable boy.
What’s the joke I missed it
@@rosslapping1121 That Bob Dylan invented his job.
"We all want to play lead guitar." Actually, Ritch The Fish never wanted to play lead guitar; he always deferred to others...
Zevon and Dylan both failed the casting as John McEnroe. They both made the schoolboy error of wearing glasses.
Wasn't Warren auditioning to be Bjorn Borg? ; p
Good point David. Match point.
I dont get the joke about Bob's guitar playing, he was a great guitarist in his prime
So....did Warren get the job?
That picture of him looks unnatural but I like it
There is no way the guy on the right is the original bob dylan that is an imposter
Lynyrd Skynyrd #1
Warren who?
anyone else see resemblances to Harrison Ford?
What the hell's with Bob looking like Weird Al !
That picture of Dylan was taken at some outdoor Woodstock like music Festival, and I think he was just trying to be incognito
The photo is from the Mariposa Folk Festival. It was his disguise for the show
@@RafaelSilvaMayo Yeah. He was probably just trying to look like a random hippie.
@@RafaelSilvaMayo Well, it fooled me until the side by side comparison was made
Maybe a nod to Country Joe ( circa Woodstock 69 ).
Yeah. I don't know Dylan at all, never met Zevon and I have a restraining order on Joan Baez, so I guess I won't post anything.
Dylan : Oh yeah, sure. I can do that.. I think guitar would suit me best.
Warren : Ooooh....yeeaahh. We're going to slot you in on harmonica, Bob. We already have guitar filled by someone else, otherwise the song can't be made.
Bob : Really? And that would be....
Warren : Me.
bob Dylan as John McEnroe. what a hilariously dated photo. hard to pull off a headband.
If it was most anyone else, and you're being honest, you'd say he/she was being a dick.
How can he be a folk singer if he isn’t folk 0:33
Double Z snap Zevon and Zimmerman
Humor as dry as a bone...he invented my job lol c'mon Dave pick it up. What been doing lately Bob 😂
I’m a Zevon fan, not so much of Dylan
Bob stinks. I just don’t get why people think he’s good. Warren Zevon was infinitely more talented.
With all due respect, think about why Warren, the Stones, the Beatles, and 99.9 % of all musicians love Dylan. I understand though that what you like is what you like.
@@paulferranti8536 Idk, Bob was as overrated as Janis Joplin. Bob got lucky AF.
@@fulcifan6946yeah, he got lucky creating masterpieces over multiple decades...total fluke...
Not sure what Joplin had to do with Bob. She had lime 3 good songs and died at 27...
Not really in the same universe tbf
@@Andy-Bodhi I’ve had plenty of arguments with friends and loved ones over this: I just tell them to watch the “We are the World” footage of Bob and that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear his name or hear his awful music. Terrible voice, not overly talented at any instrument as far as I know; he’s just a washed up commie. 🤙😎
@@fulcifan6946 who cares if he got lucky? Heck, we could even argue that literally every single successful person got lucky, at least at one point of their life. So I'm not really sure what you are on to, seems like a meaningless babble and sour grapes for sure!
True Love Tends to Forget. ♥️💋♥️ The sun is shining and all is well.
