Jim Carrey claims he doesn't exist. In 1994, he catapulted to superstardom with unforgettable roles in 'Ace Ventura,' 'The Mask,' and 'Dumb and Dumber,' yet as the world laughed, he began to lose himself. Spanning the pivotal years from '94 to '98, this video chronicles Carrey's profound existential odyssey - a voyage that transcends Hollywood's commercial confines and guides him toward a deeper understanding of his place in the universe.

I've watched several interviews with him and he constantly refers to himself and all of us as avatars or characters. I think at some point he has experienced an extreme ego death (I think from hallucinogenics). It's sometimes hard to wrap your head around that we aren't anything more than what we see in the mirror or a simply a culmination of our life's experience. We are and have been everything and everyone at one point in time, but that alone is just "US" experiencing being human. None of this matters in the grand scheme of things. So love every second of your life that way. In a way that makes "you" happy and no one else.

Agreed but failing to recognize also the fact of how he would literally lose himself in his roles to full immerse himself in that character, and in the process is what sheds light onto how we all play characters and are conditioned, because he loses himself in the mix of it all. Some play the same character their whole life, some play a few. Actors get to really understand this because most play hundreds of characters.

Keeping in mind what happened to Robin Williams almost 10 years ago, I would really love to have the opportunity to tell Jim how much it meant to me and my entire generation to have him inject a dose of magic into our childhood. I don't know if he fully appreciates that it's not idolatry, it's gratitude.
I grew up with his movies, from a literal toddler to adulthood and few people have had that sort of impact on us. It's humbling to see where he's come from and it's even more humbling to see his acting career come to an end.
I'm extremely grateful for what this man has given us.

I whole heartedly agree with this sentiment. Jim is apart of who I am I find myself in his mind state of wanting to just have fun while I'm here but wanting to be seen in more light that just the funny man. Ace ventura the Truman show and so many more movies have quite literally shaped who I am as a man. I have sat and asked the universe to send it's energy my way. I've sat alone and thought how to make others smile. I've imagined my life as a movie. I've even been dirt poor. I just want the world to feel good even for just a fleeting second to revel in the positive and the real aspects of our existence. The thought that non of this is real haunts me spiritually. I am just a guy, you're just a person but we can all be anything and nothing at all. It's sickening. So much is real but so much isn't. We're grains in an hourglass that is bound to be flipped upside down for another's own purposes. We're everything and so little simultaneously. While we are here I'd like to say thanks Jim you've tought me so much about this crazy life. If you ever read this you are so much more than you know. ❤

Agree however he always came off odd to me and an obvious person of desperation and issues. Which he pretty much admitted even in this video alone, so I was right and able to see.
I loved him as Mask, there are no other actors who would fit that role, but damn, every other of his role is pretty much disturbing ... People laugh at him thinking it's comedy but all I see is a person who is crying inside 24 7.
I seen the same things in every role Robin Williams had too. When people laughed I cried ... it was hard to me to watch any of their movies. Other then like I said the Mask stands out perfectly. So I would thank him for The Mask and keep quiet about everything else, some things rather stay in the past and you don't poke old wounds ...

Jim Carrey has experienced more than his fair share of tragedy. He struggled with depression and anxiety most of his career which is a common theme amongst comedians. Being a class clown myself I used it to hide my sadness and anger at growing up in an abusive broken home by acting out and making light out of everything. It was the only time I was alive. The trials that Jim has faced have broken him and he’s never been the same since. The easiest way to escape something meaningful is to ascribe no meaning to anything.

But he understands that Hollywood is a monster and all consuming of everyone that enters it. He gets the fact that life is a game; a simulation we all go through. @@jacktravis2718 I understand what you're saying. But in my opinion, I don't believe that "we are the universe" first off - if you want to get technical and use the scientific explanation then yes we are energy just like everything else in this place so we can't be destroyed or created. I think we are souls experiencing our time in this life/universe, not the universe experiencing itself. We each have a soul, life energy, whatever you wanna call it. I've had a NDE so I personally felt my body shutting down as my soul started to leave this dimension/physical world. I found out I have my inner voice+personality+consciousness which makes up my soul (as that was what remained with me when i exited my body), I saw my body laid on the floor from above as I kept going further away. I literally got a "tour" of the afterlife and all of the levels, dimensions, and entities that coexist but we can't see. Telepathy was the form of communication, immediate thoughts put into my head from such entities like the first one that was telling me I was dead and leaving. Unfortunately I was able to get into "line" to get into heaven but it felt too far and no feeling of comfort. Immediately dropped into hell where it's completely tailored to what I did wrong. Saw my future, saw people forgetting me, heard them talking, etc.. I was then suspended in an area like a void of black space while evil entities were there to make my eternity as hellish as possible. I'd beg to go back, they'd say "ok", I'd transport to a familiar place surrounded by friends and think wtf just happened, then immediately yanked back as they laughed over and over. I fought the entire time from when I felt my body collapse to when I got to my own hell, denying that it was the end. I heard the loudest voice ask me what have I ever done, basically pointing out why I was there.. I finally gave up, accepting I'd be in this form for eternity (I couldn't stop thinking when I was suspended, it was like my mind having new thoughts/seeing images every split second, not even 1 second to be able to relax).. after I gave up, 2 of my guardian spirits/angels brought me back and my body was now standing up like a statue and I slowly entered from above into the back of my head.. and was reconnected. I've had this experience so I know it's not "dust to dust" or that "we are god/we are the universe" because I was nothing but a tiny speck of my remaining soul in a endless area of different levels.. and I was given true understanding of eternity and the flip side of how people mourn when they leave their loved ones here because there's no possible way to change anything or do anything, just a feeling of heart ripping regret.. anyway that was my personal NDE experience and since then all the new age spirituality, all the shit about how "we are gods/we are the universe/we have the universe in us" is something I know isn't right.

Not uncommon with those that have experienced a home wherein they constantly feel the need to be someone else to uplift others. This video is also missing the huge piece of history - when he became Andy Kaufman for the movie man on the moon. The Netflix documentary goes into detail about how much he just believed he was Kaufman, and acted like a raging ass in an effort to imitate Kaufman.

I'm very lucky to have been here since your semi-early days, and it's with no exaggeration or doubt that this is easily the best video you've made. And not just that, one of the best documentaries on this website.
Letting Jim speak for himself was a bold yet beautiful move. Even though you didn't hold everyone's hand as you detailed out his story, you gave us everything we needed to understand that whatever you could've said has already been said by the man himself. And it makes it so much more impactful.
Showing his story, piecing it together to show the huge similarities between the movies and roles he's done and the man underneath, yet in such a eloquently edited way is properly mind-blowing.
    A genuine masterpiece mate.

    Great video, top-notch editing!
Although I'm sure Jim Karrie had an interesting and complex life, his case can be briefly described in a couple of sentences.
In his childhood, he imitated and looked up to his father a lot, and fueled his passion for acting and comedy by feeling the need to cheer up his sick mother.
Since his family lived in poverty, once Carrey's comedy career caught on, he felt the obligation to do his best and keep up with the demand. To him, his stardom was the sign that he was on the right track and it made sure that he would follow this track partially due to the need to help his family, partially because he wanted to become a star ever since his childhood, and partially because this much stimulation (money, fame, attention, compassion) would be extremely influential to any person.
He lived in this mode for too long and when it became obvious to Jim that all this time he's been living not for himself, he couldn't switch, because there wasn't enough of his personal self to go back to.
If he would do this, say, in his thirties when most experience mid-life crisis, he could potentially build upon what was his personality at the time, but he spent too much time walking this track built on a desire or rather a need to entertain, and make others around him feel better. In an attempt to find himself, Carrey stumbled upon Buddhist teachings that are often associated with the spiritual and sacred side of things. Jim finally could admit that he lost himself doing so with the support of it being the good and the right thing in Buddhism. No matter how much he reinforces it by quotes and teachings, he just has a mental condition, but it's great that his mind could rest within the comfort of those things.

I have never seen something so close to what reality is to me.
I've been in this state of identity crisis for years now because very young I've realised I am a different person around different people, different personality different attitude, different sense of humour....
And I've overthought this to the point where I don't know which version is truly me anymore or does a true version even exist .
It's gotten to a point where I look at myself from the third person view while I'm in conversation or doing something because I'm now so conscious about every single action I do to the point that I know the way I'm acting, I am aware of every single action I'm doing , every single emotion I'm feeling is a conscious decision. I'm not even sure what is real anymore, not sure if anything about me is ever true or honest if in the end all feels like a pretense, my anger ,my laughter,my joy, my sorrow nothing seems genuine anymore everything I'm feeling I'm only feeling because I'm supposed to feel it or I'm expected to feel those emotions by others or rather I'm expected to feel those emotions by myself.
And the only time I ever feel at peace or "myself" even if something like that exists is when I'm all alone and I have no one to keep appearances for . Me doing nothing or feeling nothing at all about anything feels like the truest version of myself.
A blank canvas which is absent of any colour.
An empty shell waiting to be filled with a persona based on the circumstances.
Even writing this comment seems like an attempt to make myself be heard because I am supposed to feel like that I should be heard.
But I'm not sad, I'm not depressed.
Because even if it is a scripted emotion or a version of myself which I don't think is true it is still me, it is still me feeling those emotions, even if I'm forcing myself to feel those emotions in the end I do feel them
I feel anger when I think I should be angry and joyful when I should be happy.
Those might feel fake or scripted but in the end I am feeling them.
Even if all this is nothing but an illusion it is an illusion which in the truest sense feels like reality and I'm ok with that and happy about it.
What made me write all this is that hearing him talk or watching this video made me realise that my warped perception of reality might not be so odd afterall and in the infinite loneliness I feel I am experiencing this loneliness with others as well.
I know probably not a single soul will read this but this is not for others to see but for myself to contemplate and think about , me writing this comment is one other way I'm re examining myself or my sense of self among many others.
