There Are Way too Many False Positives in Prenatal Screenings

- Prenatal testing can provide valuable information for anyone with a baby on the way. However, a recent report suggests that for some syndromes, these tests are wrong a majority of the time. It’s not because the tests are “bad”, though, it’s because the syndromes they test for are so rare.

The doctors insisted to my husband's mother that he was going to be born with severe birth defects and tried to convince her that she should abort the pregnancy. He came out perfectly fine
This example was exactly how we learned the Bayes Theorem in biostatistics a decade ago. My prof was doing his part for the class of mostly pre-med students and their future patients.
One of our Dr's told us our son had a very rare genetic condition based on ultrasound She told us with this condition he won't survive to birth or longer than minutes after. She scheduled an appt for termination without consent. We got a second opinion and although he does have a rare genetic condition it wasn't the one she told us. He didn't have half of the issues she told us he did. He will be 4 next week and he's thriving.
❤😊
I’m so relieved to have found this video. My Wife and I are currently going through this, and it really is terrifying the way they explain the results. We were told 79% our Baby has D.S . This is our first pregnancy and to hear news like that was devastating to say the least. The doctors are trying to push for Amniocentesis but we are refusing. It’s not worth the risk especially if the Baby is healthy and there tests are wrong. Part of us wish we never did the test in the first place. Just trying to stay Positive!
How was in the end?
Aminocentesis is required after NIPT. You should have done the NIPT first and if that was negative then that’s it. Also I found this information after talking to couple of doctors in the family. Our family doctor didn’t say this. So yes the way the information and advice is presented is completely BS lol
Currently going thru it myself doctor says my baby has trisomy 18 and instantly suggested abortion I’m hoping for the best outcome whatever it is I’m not giving up on my son best wishes to your wife baby and you 💕🙏🏽
@@kimrivera3561 thank you and good luck to you as well!! Please get NIPT done ASAP. It is emotional when you find out the results. I pray and wish that you stay strong and remember to make the best decision for you, your family and the future of your baby. May god give you strength to overcome any and all hardship!!
Did you and your wife go a different route to determine whether or not your baby had DS? Im not against the idea of the amniocentesis testing but I’m also very aware of the risks. I was told we would get a more detail ultrasound first before any testing so I’m staying hopeful everything clears with just that.
I had a false negative. And I’m so glad I did. My child is full of the most unconditional love and it’s like living with a real life angel. Who has some devilish behaviours.. but it’s a small price to pay to know her this lifetime. People with Down syndrome deserve to live. People without Down syndrome don’t always deserve the love they bring.
Thank you, Very helpful information
That's why you tell them the positive predictive value of the result
The tests do this and all give a percentage or ratio, but still have a ton of false positives
I just tested positive for Downs syndrome. We are waiting for the further testing, but this is comforting.
Any further results?
@@dkrayy I was negative!
@@kaileycrowe6234 thats wonderful to hear! Did you take the CVS for amnio test? Also, did they give any reasoning as to why the screening showed positive for downs? Sorry worried potential parent here asking.
@Kailey Crowe I’m tested positive too for Down syndrome and further suggested tests. What was your afp, ue3 , thankyou appreciate your help
Is it the trisomy 21 issue in your positive result ?Is the positive result from NIPT test? I am facing the positive Down’s syndrome after the NIPT test? Look forward to hearing from you. It’s so tough for me now. Just want to know more information about any similar cases. I appreciate your answer in advance.
This exact thing happened to my sister. As someone that works in bioinformatics I had to explain it to her.
She is so lucky to have had someone that works in bioinformatics to explain this to her!
we are currently going through this now me and my lady with our unborn daughter
Hi.plese can you help me with some info. My baby recive a 1st Irt screening and it is 76ug/L it can be a false positive? The limit here is 71ug/L. Thanks
This highlights the importance of patient education. It's all too common that patients will get tests they don't fully understand, and if doctors don't explain them adequately the patients can reach conclusions which cause unnecessary anxiety or lead to further unnecessary tests or treatments.
yes, patients need informed caretakers and advocates. We need to train our doctors better, to use Dr. Arron as an example of how to know better, explain better, and do better!
My daughter was diagnosed with trisomy 13 but She was perfect 🥰
I’ve been given a 1-116 chance. I’m freakin out.
I have been given 1 / 41 of T18 and so stressed can't stop crying
🙏🙏🙏
My girl was diagnosed with t21. I’m heartbroken
@@charlesyearty3061 how are u now and the baby
I’ve been given a DS result from genetic testing AND the amniocentesis. I’m due in October. I’m a nervous wreck.
Hope you are doing great. How are you and the babe now?
Wow, I can see so much trauma resulting from this O_O
And confusion. I had results come back inconclusive . Now I’m over it.
My nipt came back inconclusive. It couldn’t even tell me the gender. I did a sonogram about two weeks ago. Baby is growing. I did have a second sac that was empty. I think that messed up the test. At first they thought it was twins and it was only one.
Is the amniocentesis accurate??
im glad he stated this because I'm very health and I've been living this lifestyle for over 20 years, im also an wholistic herbalist and I don't get sick at all, my lady isn't as healthy as me but she does good. One doctor told her she was negative for Sma and 2 days later another doctor told her something different now has her in fear and scared off of a Screening test not a Diagnosis like you said.
Would this also apply to tests for Autism? Is there a pre-natal screening for Autism?
Just heartbroken for the people who make decisions to terminate based on a misunderstanding. The emotional fallout from something like that is so frequently swept under the rug. And so often the one to bear the majority of that emotional burden is a woman. Let's do better.
I’m not confident but is CZcams shadow banning this video?
I read about NIPT, they rather have more false positive than have negative NIPT. Thats why they pick things that might be false.
Bayes Theorem strikes again
And to think how many abortions happen because of prenatal testing….
Like, I’m pretty pro choice but that still hits me as a tragedy….
Well yeah, because if someone is going through prenatal testing at all, odds are quite good they want and are looking forward to their baby.
I personally experience a bigger problem with false negatives among my patients...
wait are you saying- you are a medical professional who experiences more false negatives in regards to prenatal screenings than false positives?
@@victoriaridgway2286 in our department I know 3 cases of false negative nipt - one with downs syndrome, one with Edward's syndrome and one triploid.
They were diagnosed later sonographically, but nipt came back normal. 🤷🏼♀️
I was told my unborn child has t21. Should I be scared?
@@charlesyearty3061 any further results?
I think something is wrong with your intro. The sound sounds distorted during the animations.
I tested positive for Down syndrome.
I refused amniocentesis. My due day is March 1 2023.
Hlo mam, baby is healthy ?
My double marker results is positive,am under going amniocenthesis.
@@deepadinesh8070 How about the test result?
Your baby fine
How is your baby?
@@deepadinesh8070 how’s is everything? Plz update
This is horrifying as healthy babies lose their lives due to these false positives
Well just do the same test multiple times in a row instead if there is too much false positive. Also helps false negatives
The informed patient has to be pay multiple time with a long delay to be sure they can avort.
But ofc the amerain medical system do not want that at all cost.
The purpose of the test is screening, performing it multiple times still won't guarantee whether the foetus has the syndrome.
This is why mothers need to decide if they want a diagnostic test like CVS or amniocentesis, but as the video states there are costs and risks associated with these too.
You can only reduce the probability if the tests are independent.
The US system would love the excuse to charge for the same thing multiple times, so the fact they don't is an indicator that it wouldn't work.
They only allow it to be done once. I went through this and tried getting retested and they dont allow it or theres no coverage and it would be around $10,000 vs the $200 I originally paid.
It’s the casual eugenics for me though ✨
So... How many times is there a false negative?
If something identifies 75% of cases it misses 25%.
This is why I point blank refused to have any prenatal screening with my daughter. If she had any conditions it would likely turn up in an ultrasound and if not, I rather deal with it than have a doctor try to convince me to end the pregnancy.
Let's be real, prenatal testings primary goal is eugenics, trying to kill disabled children before they are born, not preparing parents. If it was about preparing parents, I wouldn't hear so many first hand accounts of doctors pushing for mothers to murder their healthy baby because a test came back positive (also disabled does not always equal not healthy!)
So true wow these doctors are too much like wtf 🤬
I was just told my baby tested positive for Down Syndrome, and now we are going to get a test. Even if my baby does have it I will not abort it, but I am suspicious of how the approach the mother with the "results" it causes a lot of stress.
@@abbydt88 my girl was jus told this. I’m so worried. Idk what to do

Good point, is there another standard statistical number that could be used to highlight this?
Here is an example I thought of that I call "weighted S/S" =(pC*pTP)/((1-pC)*PFP). Where pC=probability of the Condition, pTP=probability of the True Positive, pFP=probability of the False Positive. That is for a population, "weighted S/S" = # people that had condition and tested positive / # people that did no have the condition and tested positive
Ex: For you proposed hypothetical "weighted S/S" =((75/100)*(20/80000))/((0.5/100)*((80000-20)/80000))=0.04 - Pretty low
Ex2: Say you have flue symptoms and you think that the chance you have COID is 50/50 and you want to know if you should take the MedSam Home COVID test (pTP=55%, PFP=3%)
"weighted S/S" =((55/100)*(50/100))/((3/100)*(50/100))=18.3!!! Much Higher - YES
Any other ideas? Is there a similar standard statistical number that yields this or a similar distinction?
