      Vanilson Braga no clue on the specifics, but pill millipedes are only able to survive in perfectly cool, shaded and damp, tropical conditions, filled with rotting wood in advanced state of decay. Without these exact conditions, they will die. I believe this particular species is found deep within forests of Malaysia. For those interested in keeping them, during shipping, overheating can kill important gut flora, so they may die entirely outside of your control and may not be able to survive unless they can get them back (I would assume by eating the molts and waste of fellow pill millipedes, but I'm not entirely sure). They are almost as hard to take care of as sea lilies, it's possible, but just barely.

      These aren't millipedes. They're crustaceans. They're basically isopods.

    • @chitinskin9860
      @chitinskin9860 Před 6 lety +95

      Jason Lee they are pill millipedes. While they look the same at a glance, you can tell the differences very clearly on closer inspection. For one, they have two pairs of legs for each body segmant, while isopods have all there legs on a single body segment. Another tell tale sign is that glossy sheen and smooth exoskeleton, only a few oceanic isopods have that feature, but all myriapods have a waxy exoskeleton, especially millipedes, pill millipedes having some of the smoothest. These guys also have way more body segments than an isopod, growing more as they age like all other myriapods. Then there's that unmistakable millipede face. It's a common mistake to mix up the two, but the differences become obvious once you do enough research.
      Or just to simplify things, pill millipedes are just short millipedes, while isopods look like a fusion between a trilobite and a shrimp.
      Edit: Also they curl up differently.

    the reason these are so big and rounded and have such smooth non-armor-like segments and have completely black undersides and have so many legs compared to other species of pillbugs is because these arent actually isopods! these are millipedes that mimic isopods, or as i call them, pillipedes, that trick insect-eating predators, as pillbugs are actually crustaceans

      Oh really? So they are in the family of millipedes? But they are harmless right? I’m pretty sure, if so.. where do they often live? I’m in NY and I’ve never in my life seen those before, and they seem like gentle giants.i actually have a huge enclosure with about 200 pill bugs in there, but they are not that big! They are about the size of my nail some a bit bigger and they are usually black, grey, brown, or black with orange/yellow dots.
