The word jade in American English refers originally to jadeite. It was take from the mesoamericans and brought to Europe, usually in the form of a small smooth rounded axe/ adze which the Europeans would typically carve into a Christian cross/ crucifix by taking advantage of the thick and thin and to make the new pendant.

Guatemalan lilac jade sometimes has dark purple and white speckles evenly throughout. Does that make it less valuable because of the white?

The white speckles do make lilac jade more affordable, so it’s a great way to still get that pop of lavender color without spending too much moolah. It makes for beautiful earrings and unique cabochons, but not always ideal for carvings.
