Tommy Ribs - Yes, they were “great” fights, but the punishment they meted out to each other was so heavy that it was no doubt a contributory factor to brain damage and their deaths in their 6O’s and early 70’s. In Ali’s case, for his last 30-odd years he was a mere shadow of his former self.
I enjoyed those fights as much as the next person ... at the time. But the time will surely come when such brutality in the name of sport must end. Few heavyweight prize fighters live to a ripe, heathy old age.
Much as we “shun” what passed for sport in Roman Gladiatorial contests, so will future generations look back on the barbarity of the sport of heavyweight boxing, and shake their heads in dismay at the brutality of our “civilisation” and sporting “culture”.
Other sports are increasingly bringing in measures to protect their athletes from serious head injury.
The big difference between professional boxing and most other sports where serious head injury might be occasioned is that the ultimate object in boxing is to cause your opponent brain injury. That is what a “knockout” is ... and we applaud.

Joe Frazier came to the Irish center in Philadelphia once when the Catholic mayor of Belfast came here. Joe and the mayor were good friends. The mayor was shot by extremists but lived to become mayor. Both men were wonderful people. I met the champ that night and he was a really fine man. My father met Ali when working at the airport here. He said that champ Ali was a wonderful person and took time to talk and sign an autograph. These were really great men and of course champions.
