  • The New Silk Road is a mammoth project meant to connect China with the West. It’s a gigantic infrastructure project that Beijing says will benefit all. But this two-part documentary shows another side: of China’s self-interest and geopolitical ambitions.
China's path to global power leads through the legendary trade road. Our authors travel west on two separate paths: One team follows the sea route, along which China is expanding its support bases, while the other follows the ancient Silk Road through Central Asia. Their journey takes them through stunning landscapes and to magical places with ancient caravanserais, where the lore of the old Silk Road lives on. At the same time, they observe China’s overwhelming new influence in immense construction sites and shipping hubs. People everywhere are hoping the new trade will bring them and their children work and prosperity, just as the old Silk Road did hundreds of years ago. But others fear that a future dominated by China will bring them no good at all. "Clean water, the mountains and nature are much more important than the money they give us," the filmmakers learn in Kyrgyzstan. Chinese investment has not only bestowed the country with better roads, power lines and railway lines, but also with environmental pollution, corruption and crippling debt. Oman is another stop on the line, where Beijing has taken over large parts of a new Special Economic Zone in the desert city of Duqm. You can still see traditional Arab dhows in the old harbor at Sur, but they no longer have a place in today’s international trade. Instead, the horizon is dotted with huge container ships, many of them flying the Chinese flag. Meanwhile, the French port city of Marseille is aiming to become the New Silk Road’s European bridgehead. A small container village in the hills above the city is the first step. Cheap textiles from the Far East are delivered here to the "Marseille International Fashion Center”. MIF 68 for short - 68 is considered a lucky number in China - is geared towards distributing China’s products throughout Europe. The two-part documentary shows the breathtaking dimensions of this gigantic project - one where, it would seem, no stone will be left unturned.

Indian has been experiencing direct clashes with china due to its expansionist policies for many decades now, all these years when we said this about china to the western countries nobody listened. Now since its starting to affect their economy and disrupting their local cultures, they decide to make documentaries, make a big news off it etc. After all we're the direct neighbor of china and follow democracy, instead of listening to what we have to say, the western nations listened to Pakistan and china. And who doesn't want to make money , literally every single country invited china's huge investments with wide open arms, coz that's all they care about, more and more money pouring in. Now when they realize that they're actually becoming more and more dependent on Chinese, its already too late..

@@chima6291 Modern life does not equate better living. Living in some high rise and working a job in someone else's company is not necessarily a better life than living in a yurt and riding horses on the plains. It takes more and more money to live a good life in a modern country, real estate prices are becoming too expensive and more people wind up poor rather than in the middle class. It is pretty clear that these developments have winners and losers. Being poor in a modern city is a lot harsher than being poor in the country. Some people might be wiser than just looking for material conveniences, local cultures and lifestyles can provide more freedom, a better family life and a better community life. You assume all people just want stuff, some people want to hold on to their property and enjoy the freedom of being independent.

@@1ohno11 America perfectly understands, since this is a version of what we did for decades, like much of what the Chinese government is doing. China is grabbing the low-hanging fruit of rampant capitalism, which has given great rewards for the people. Now their overlords are at the part of the dose-response curve that gives lesser results. When, for instance, the Hungarian government changes, and the citizens find they have to pay US$ billions, part of which went into the pockets of their own overlords, China will be as resented as the IMF and American banks are resented in other places.
Yes, the Chinese people just need to be ruled, no need for concern about the government. The people just need to understand that they are genetically, culturally, and intellectually superior, and everything will be fine. You bet. Good plan. Have fun with that. We white Americans have that down already, thank you very much, and it is working out great :^/

The Anglophone literature is also often criticized for being hypocritical since many of the claims it makes are based on simplistic moral binaries and that there is little or no difference between Chinese policy and those policies followed by the other external powers in the region (Chen, 2001, pg. 603). The Chinese perspective is unified into a coherent narrative by several common themes. While the Anglophone literature is unified by its negative depiction of Chinese policies in Africa, the Chinese view paints a more positive depiction of China’s policy. These typically emphasize China as a potential role model for the economic development of the developing world in the light of the perceived failure of the dominant economic paradigms rather than simply being a facilitator of authoritarian norms as the Anglophone literature claims it is (Kim and Li, 2013, pg.28).

@JarJarBinks In 2018 China's GDP (Nominal) was ~$ 13.5 Trillion, while total exports were ~ $ 2.5 T, or 18.5% of nominal GDP. Of these exports, 19.3% were to US and 16.4% were to EU. IOW, exports to US were only 3.6% of nominal GDP and to EU 3.0%. If you use GDP PPP (~$ 26.4 T in 2018) -- which is what matters to the internal economy (the people's standard of living) -- the figures are even lower: 1.8% to US exports, 1.4% to EU.
So, "pull(ing) that many "exports" out' does not really cause China problems, as Trump is finding out to his discomfiture. Further, China has over $ 3 Trillion in foreign reserves, more than enough to comfortably switch focus to developing its economy for internal consumption.
BTW, India's services exports to the US are largely low margin, low cost (in $ terms), low quality (e.g. 2nd, usually 3rd tier software). And whereas China's technological sophistication has increased rapidly (think Huawei), India's has remained relatively flat over the past 30 years.

Today channels like the print , wire all these r started by reporters themselves they criticize the govt n govt cant do anything about it.
Sure news channels wont be neutral to criticize both ruler n opposition but atleast they criticize the govt n shed the lights on its failures.

Not all of us Europeans think like that. But many do not understand that our interests while sometimes aligning with those of the US are not identical with theirs.
They have a hard time imagining coexistence in a world where Asia, especially China is more powerful than the west.
I guess to some degree the Americans' entitlement of being the worlds superpower rubbed off on them.
More understanding both ways would help. I guess the prejudices that many of us Europeans hold are not even ill-inteded. It is the consequence of living in a bubble. We learn almost nothing about Asia in school, there is no systematic coverage in the media and even those of us speaking multiple languages usually have no Asian one among them. If you have a good camera, some travel money, and courage, I think it would be a marvelous topic for a CZcamsr to be trailing right now. I wish I could up and go right now to show everyone all about this...

Well done and informative. I hope you all do a continuation with China's BRI in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. China is the new superpower, we might as well acknowledge this.

Why DW gave a ❤ to everyone who claimed this is the best documentary.
Seriously, DW, you really think this is the best documentary without qualification? Seriously? Seriously?
I lost most my respect to Germany. If you can't compete against them, slander them.

It's actually shocking that the Germans are now on board with the Anglo-American anti China psyop.

@@DWDocumentary China doesn't make dumbass bias documentaries to please popularity. China has lots of positive coverages about the west and they are trying to learn what they do well unlike the stupid western media like this reporting only the negatives about China. Why don't you coverage china's investments in Serbia reviving the steel factory, lifting people out of poverty in Ethiopia, huge economic improvement in Pakistan, by the way the Pakistani prime minister thanked China himself for that contribution. If you conveniently turn a blind eye to it, it proves nothing but you are a stupid biased worthless media.
