  • Knowing the rain was coming, I made the decision to go for it. I don't usually ride in the rain, but the best way to improve a skill... Anyways, as I was packing up, the hotel owner came over with the radar up on his phone to make sure I knew what was coming. A nice gesture.
Two obvious issues with today's ride:
    1) The rain itself. My windshield and helmet visor were a mess. Now if I were smart and treated them with Rain-X or something, that wouldn't be a problem. But camera lenses? Same issue. It makes a good case for multiple cameras, as if one had a big drop right in the middle, I could switch to another which might not, so in the end, I was able to cobble together a pretty coherent video. I wonder if Rain-X would work on GoPro lenses...
    2) And sound. The GoPro is not waterproof (or even really resistant) if an external microphone is plugged in. So all I had were crappy, noisy, wet microphones resulting in not much moto or environment sound at all. I did mix in what I could though.
I also had (surprise, surprise) miscellaneous GoPro issues resulting in less footage than I had hoped for. If the Charlevoix part seems really short and cut off, it's because it was.
Straight blast up Michigan 31 to Charlevoix, the Petoskey, Bay View, and Harbor Springs. From there it was into the "Tunnel of Trees" on 119 "Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Rte". If you ever get the chance, it's a simply gorgeous ride by bike or car! Have to wonder how awesome it would be to live there! Past the Five Mile Creek School, through Good Hart and Cross Village.
"United We Stand, Devided We Fall" I give the sign painter high marks for the sentiment, but he failed on spelling.
A quick look at the McGulpin Lighthouse, but it was raining harder and I was pretty done with it, so straight on into Mackinaw City - The tourist hell of the north :D Okay, it was kind of fun to walk around later. Although when I got to the hotel, I seriously thought I had holed my radiator. Steam all over the place and that horrid smell of coolant. Turns out, that's just the NC in the rain and all was good. Scary hour or so though.
