What's the Best KLR 650 Windshield Farkle? Review of the KLRDash! o

  • When my riding buddy Lonny asked me to do a review on the KLRDash, I was skeptical. While it obviously looks awesome and puts gadgets up in the line of sight, I doubted the wind protection. Turns out that with a rally-inspired design, this is easily one of the best farkles you can get for a Generation 2 Kawasaki KLR 650!
    The best part is that this farkle works great on dirt AND street. No more gigantic windscreens breaking collar bones, and no more wind fatigue on the highway. If I had a Gen 2, I'd buy this in a heartbeat!

    Got my KLR dash off of this review. I love this channel, and your reviews are extremely in depth and I really appreciate that!
    This mod has been the single best investment on my bike for road use, off road obviously crash bars a skid plate are more important off road, but for highway this thing does IMMENSE work making that job more comfortable!

    One of the first things I noticed when I got on my first KLR was how bad the wind shield is. My previous and first bike just didn't even have a windshield and I was very surprised by how much the KLR's stock windshield just knocks the wind right into your face. Can't wait to try out one of these! Great vid!

    Great video eveRide! I actually just purchased this dash a couple weeks ago (it's sitting here, along with a new double bubble awaiting install). There's always a risk purchasing a new windscreen, so nice to know your video backs up what other reviews seem to be saying - that the KLR DASH is worth the purchase. Keep on producing the quality vids!

      +Chris Botting Thanks man! I have to ask... did you get the shorter or longer windscreen? While it's still unattached, if it's the shorter one, I'd see if you can return it and exchange it for the larger. It makes a HUGE difference!

    Tyler, I bought the KLRDash based on this video right here. Your production quality is always excellent. I'm really liking the dash space in my line of sight. It makes using my GPS a lot less hazardous and I'm thinking of wiring some auxiliary blinker indicators up there to remind me when I haven't cancelled the blinker hard enough. But I'm disappointed by the wind buffeting reduction. I (5'10") did not experience an improvement for wind buffeting around my head using the Kawasaki TALL windshield (Kawasaki part number K46001-336). I've tried all three KLRDash positions. The tallest position actually causes buffeting at lower speeds (~45mph) that wasn't previously there. But the extra dash space alone is worth the install.
    Rusting hardware is an area for improvement. I made a comment on your KLRDash install video a couple weeks ago stating that the holes didn't align on my dash plate and the bolts rusted quickly. That comment seems to have disappeared, so I figured I'd give an update here. Lonny sent me replacement equipment. Good service. The holes now align. However, after two days the new bolts are already rusting. It hasn't rained, but we've had dew in the morning. I can see from +5thGear 's post below, I'm not alone with rusting bolts. I'll pass that info along to Lonny as well, but FYI to anyone reading this.

    • @eveRide
      @eveRide  Před 8 lety +1

      +SLO hiker Man that is really bad news, and I'll definitely pass it onto Lonny. Out here in the desert rust just doesn't happen :\

      +eveRide ADV I thought I'd provide a photo demonstrating what I've experienced with corrosion over the last two months.
      i.imgur.com/6FfzAZE.jpg
      As you can see, it's pretty bad. I finally bought some stainless steel bolts I'll be replacing most of the bolts with. I'm emailing Lonny to see if he can give me the specs on the long bolts that go into the dash so I can order some stainless steel online. They didn't have those at my local hardware store. Hopefully this is corrected for future shipments.

    I have the dash and upper dash plate installed on my 2013. It's one of the most functional mods I have, it looks awesome with my KLR factory tall windscreen and it keeps most of the wind over my beaked helmet even at 6'5" with a SC tall seat. The only gripe I have is when you get it you must hit it with another coat of paint before install. The factory spray will scratch while adjusting the fit and angle and after a 2 night camping trip all of the hex heads on the supplied bolts were rusted. Great product still!

    • @eveRide

  • @NWBikeButcher

    I bought the KLR Dash's Upper and Lower Dash, The windshield riser, Dual USB socket and the cigarette lighter style accessories plug. I also bought and installed two micro amber lights in the top left and right holes in the upper dash. This gives me better sight, warning me I left my turn signal flashing. The windshield riser is great it makes room for the upper dash and blocks more wind. It also looks great. I will be adding an aftermarket windshield that is 4 inches taller than stock. The taller windshield is not that needed after rising the stock windshield. In my situation I ride a lot in the rain. I attached 2 Ram Ball mounts for my cell phone and my GPS unit. I can switch one out for my GoPro camera or other attachment. There is room for a 3rd Ram Ball mount in the center of the dash. The Lower dash was the perfect location for the Double USB plug and Accessory port These 2 power ports have excellent waterproof sealing caps. I plug in my air compressor or light cord for my tent lighting into the accessory port. The KLR Dash items come painted flat black. That's fine with me. After drilling and tapping and figuring my mounting of accessories, I will have the items Black powder coated. I highly recommend all these items.Jesse James

      The wind shield I had on mine was pretty friggen tall, after the mod at 6' myself I could barely look over it while sitting.
      I raised mine until the steep part at the top was vertical(whatever kind of wider/taller shield that was I had on there). it was an improvement for me both offroad and at high speed, I recommend something heavier duty than the license plates I used though

I'm getting ready to place my order but am having trouble deciding between the double bubble and sport touring. at the end of the video you mention the most wind benefit is from the sport touring but is there any disadvantage of the sport touring over the double bubble in the woods or on technical trails?

    i have a Happy Trails Ralley screen mount, which does essentially the same thing as the KLR Dash does. It was on my KLR when I bought it... as were a few other mods (OSR "rack", fork brace, heated grips, Corbin seat) which nudged me towards the purchase as I would have bought them anyway. I have a ZeroGravity Double Bubble on the rally mount, and at 5-10 with a stepped (lower) corbin seat, I have NO buffeting on my helmet at any speed. I have ridden the KLR on the interstate and I've not had a bit of trouble with the wind. The only thing I have real trouble with is a bit of high speed wobble once you get to about 80. I think my worn out suspension has a lot to do with that, though.
    my wife's GZ 250 has a small windscreen on it. While my wife has no complaints, the screen dumps the air right on top of my helmet... and I hate it. She however is one inch shorter than me, and she says her helmet doesnt rattle around on her head at all. So. Everyone should remember that the height of the rider, along with the height of the seat in relation to the top of the screen all play a part.

    • @eveRide
      @eveRide  Před 8 lety

      +b1pig Yeah that definitely plays a big part in the scheme of things. Jesse is just a bit shorter than I am and likes his screen, but for me the taller screen was WAY better.

      +100SpokeRiderz I wholeheartedly agree! Although there is something nice about a carburetor when you're way out there in the badlands... I think for a long trip through sparsely populated areas I'd prefer a carb, but for everything else I'd want FI!

  • @DustySquitoNM

    I've seen that dash on a buddy's KLR once. He bought it just for the extra mounting locations for his gadgets and gizmos. The wind protection was just an added bonus for him, but he was totally sold on it. I think it was Happy Trail that sold the particular dash he bought.

    • @eveRide

      +dustysquito From what I heard Lonny showed HT the dash as a "partnership" and they just duplicated it :(

      @DustySquitoNM Před 8 lety

      Oh man, that's rough. I figured Lonny's dash was a new thing. I didn't realize he came up with it that long ago. Well, if he decides to make one for the DR650, I'll support the cause :)

    • @eveRide
      @eveRide  Před 8 lety

      +dustysquito For sure! He made this thing way back in 2008! I'm trying to twist his arm to make one for the Gen 1 KLR and the DRZ. Maybe something a little more universal?

    • @DustySquitoNM
      @DustySquitoNM Před 8 lety

      I think the "dash" part of the thing is what keeps it from being a universal product. Otherwise, I bet you could pull off a crude version of this with some milled spacers that had a slope to them and mounting holes for the wind screen. What would screw over the DR, sadly, is the complete lack of support behind the front cowling. Without adding reinforcement behind it, it would get way too floppy. But hey, that's what I pay other people to figure out :)

    Question,
    Do you happen to know what size forward sprocket he had on that gen 2 ? I have an 09 and it came from its previous owner with a 15 tooth forward sprocket... instead of the factory 14..... you hit almost 100 MPH on vid.... mine would maybe do 80 at best.
