Gripen - Always combat ready

- The key to operational effect is to get fighters airborne when needed. That’s why Gripen is designed to make sure that availability is maximized at all times. A Gripen force can operate from small airfields or even highway when no runways are available. For instance, Gripen can operate from a road strip of only 16 x 800 metres. In this film you will get more information what makes Gripen always combat ready.

Gripen fighters can be airborne right after the scramble signal - explains why I hear a jet every time I make scrambled eggs, nice on Saab.

The Swedish approach to fighter jets has always intrigued me - they are the Lotus Elise of the air superiority fighter world; small, light, with stats that don't look very impressive on paper. But they do what they do very well.

We were convinced to buy this as a security feature for the summerhouse. It looked so cheap compared to alternative 5-th generation fighter jets. (Also you can use your golf course for a runway!) The maintenance is really simple, you or your gardener can do it on site, without constant negotiation for spare parts with a dealership like F22 or need to decipher russian manuals (a nightmare!) as for a MiG . Also, as all Swedish vehicles it has every possible safety feature including child seats as a standart!
We were quite happy with it for about a year, its really great for obliterating privacy invading drones and tacky annoying hot air baloons. but now we have grown some ambitions of power projection and its range of 3000km's feels really limiting as it does not have carrier compatibility!
My verdict: Quite good as your first fighter jet. but lacks in stealth and upgrade capabilities. 8/10.
"Did you find this review helpful?" Yes.
I highly recommend the F-18 Super Hornet, though not as comfortable it's a great second plane. With plenty of range and carrier compatibility. You will to go anywhere in the world. You also will have more pilons for all of your needs. From Air to Air to Air to Ground. Honestly a great second plane if you ask me. 9/10

There is a gripen simulator here in sweden. In Linköping.
Or you can steal one from a military base in sweden.

Also now I know how to spell Gryphon in Swedish. Thank you Saab. It makes sense that they'd name their best jet after their logo. They have another jet called the Drakken. No points for guessing what that translates to
And it´s pronounced Griiipen, not Grippen. And Draaaaken isn´t pronounced Drakken either. But we spell it Gripen and Draken (and Viggen, which was the predecessor of Gripen, but there you might guess the pronounciatipon?), just to confuse

On the Saab 35 Draken installed licensed English Rolls-Royce Avon. The Saab 37 Viggen was equipped with the American Pratt & Whitney JT8D (Volvo RM8). Saab is always really good in everything!
F16: "Oh no! The airstrip is not clean enough! I might break my engine!"
Gripen: "Lemme just land in the middle of the forest."
I assume the F-16 actually can land on somewhat messy airstrips but the decision is made to not do that to save on the engines.
Much like how the swedish air force obsessively cleans their airstrips so that the engines wont wear more than necessary.
@@Devantejah Perhaps... I just remember when I was on air show and I fell down laughing when I saw truck sized vacuum cleaner that was bought just for few F-16s we have here in Poland.
Apparently MiG-29s didn't require something like that, as even when they were used for far longer than they should, engines themself were fine. It's just everything else was falling apart and ejection seat tended to fail...
And now Poland is gonna buy like 32 F-35As for 150M$ a pop while they were offered pretty much every NATO fighter meant for export, including Gripen (that I like) and cheap used F-16s (that we have pilots for)

5/5 - Just ordered mine a month ago. It came in a nice package with detailed manuals, nice finish, definitely doesn't feel cheap. If you swap the five recruits by five seasoned support guys, the rearm and refuelling can drop to 8 minutes; best time so far was 7:36. Saab support is super responsive, Swedish level of care and attention. One of my air-to-air missile came with a small defect, I could not fit it. After a support call, I got a missile replacement after 48 hours! The tools are quite good; the stand and pilot stairs are from Ikea, you can easily fold it and store in your garage.
