This might be an odd thing to say but I hadn't seen you in full Veronica costume yet and I was absolutely floored watching this footage of West End live - I was looking at you and thinking "Oh my God. Those are my legs. Veronica Sawyer has my legs!" I can't explain how surreal it is to see someone who looks like me playing a part like that and not have it be about her looking the way that I do. Like, that's Veronica and that gal's got LEGS and she looks SO EFFING GOOD.

After being in narcisstic relationships, the song " I say NO!" Hits my heart like a mallet. Musicals always make me cry, cos there are so many deep lines or song lyrics that hit your heart, and I'm 44, so never feel bad about being emotional.
I was honestly so saddened by the amount of unnecessarily rude comments about you and the cast under the West End Live video. I understand the Heathers fanbase has a deep love for Barrett (rightly so, her voice is god-like), but it's such flawed logic to think that because Barrett was the first Veronica, she was also the best and nobody can be better than her. Barrett is incredible, but it's so unfair not to give other actresses a chance to be just as incredible as she was!
I'm ridiculously excited to see you as Veronica on the 24th of June and I let out a little excited squeal upon seeing you in costume with your short hair in the West End Live video, just so you know that there are a multitude of people out here who are supporting your portrayal of Veronica.

It's also so silly that fans won't accept other Veronicas because they're depriving themselves of such ridiculous talent! I'm 99% sure Barrett will never reprise the role, and if no one else was allowed to be Veronica, there would be no more live productions!

I totally agree that it's such flawed logic. I know we all have our favourite interpretations of the character but the whole point of loving a show is learning all the different interpretations actors have of the characters and the original work! It's fun to compare and contrast, but it gets toxic when people become dismissive just because they're not the one who originated the role. I mean, there's always that special place in your heart reserved for your first introduction to the character, but you've got to let others in!

It's so wonderful to see that represented in a role like Veronica - in Australia we had a girl with curves play Veronica as well (Jaz Flowers, who'd also played Tracy in Hairspray!), and a university production of the show had a black girl playing her!

I am an aspiring music theatre actress myself and Veronica has been one of my dream roles since the off-broadway cast album fell into my lap. I also think it’s a common misconception about Heathers Musical that Veronica has a certain ‘look’; I guess because of the film and because of the original production. But the book of the musical doesn’t actually give any description of what Veronica should look like. It describes her character (as in, demeanour) and gives an age range. Other than that, the only thing it says is ‘all ethnicities’ which I think is bloody great. It also means a curvier, curly blonde-haired Caucasian Veronica, or BAME Veronica, is as valid as the original!
When you spoke about your old boyfriends, it touched me. About three years ago I had a very manipulative, abusive (both mentally and sexually), very horrible boyfriend who I felt stuck with forever because he made me feel as if he was the only person who would ever love me, while also making me feel ugly and worthless. I thought you deserved to know that you are one of the reasons I sought out help for the mental scars I was left with. Thanks to you, Carrie, I am now attending weekly therapy and no longer have to see him every day at school. Thank you so, so, so much.

I genuinely don't understand why people would talk about whether someone is "right" or "wrong" for a role. The director is in charge of casting decisions, not you and you don't know why the director cast who they did but they obviously cast that person for a reason or else, you know that person wouldn't be cast? I don't know why the director cast Carrie as Veronica, but obviously the director saw her as Veronica, so he cast her. It's her job now to kill it as that part (which she is), end of story.
She SLAYED 'I Say No', which was the first Heathers song I ever heard, and that was immediately in my Spotify playlist afterwards. While the voice I usually hear in my head when I think of Veronica is still Barret, Carrie is what I hear when I hear 'I Say No'. And they're both awesome, even though they're the only Veronicas I've seen/heard

For me seventeen has more meaning than seventeen reprise, especially because “don’t stop looking in my eyes” is something that I have already said a lot to many of my friends trying to take their lives and the best thing you can do in those situations is to keep them busy while you don’t have help

I can understand why people struggle with seeing someone other than what they expected in a role. Mainly because I have experience, I was an idiot and chose not to go and see Lee Mead as Joseph (Technicolour dreamcoat) purely because I had seen Jason Donovan in that role when I was a kid. I couldn't see past them having someone else without them looking identical to Jason, so my family went without me. Cut to me a few years later ... I have now seen Lee Mead in numberous roles and he is fabulous and it honestly pains me that I didn't see him as Joseph too. - TLDR leave judgements about casting to someone else or you'll end up the fool.

I think the role is greatly influenced by the actor. When you get ingrossed and connected to a character in the show you don't notice the way they look. It's the character that gets you.

Comparing actor's performances in that way is like #1 No-no for revivals of iconic shows like this. I remember watching an interview for the recent revival of Dames at Sea on Broadway where the interviewer asked Eloise Kropp something about performing Bernadette Peters' iconic role. Eloise basically said "The character isn't Bernadette Peters" (Eloise said it way better actually she lowkey told that reporter it was 👌🏽). The character isn't Barrett Wilbert Weed as Veronica Sawyer. It isn't Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer. The character is Veronica Sawyer, whoever the actor and creative teams finds that to be. And if that's a British girl with blonde, curly hair and curves, then that's who Veronica is for now.

I adore the message behind the musical, and the way Veronica just wants everyone to be kind and Beautiful. There's so much unnecessary hate in the world today and people don't understand that being different and true to yourself is beautiful! So to you and the cast and crew of Heathers, thank you for sharing this message and for being so fabulous in the process! Your West End Live performance was absolutely amazing and Carrie, you are one of the most talented and beautiful people that has graced the West End in years and should be so proud of how far you've come! Watching this 5 years later, because I've just seen Heathers for the first time after being a fan for years and just been to the Open Book Tour. The people that aren't happy with you being "not skinny" are in the minority. It means a lot to me to see someone who looks like me playing principal roles. Representation matters, thank you Carrie
In watching this I'm thinking back to a video you made a little while back about how much you changed after a particular traumatic relationship and how you could see the difference when watching yourself. Well, I can see the difference watching you now -- you seem utterly in control and utterly unapologetic for who you are. You radiate strength. Watching you, I am so proud of you and so proud to be a woman, proud to watch you occupy your space in the world with grace and power while you inspire other women (and others!) to do the same. I'm a couple of years younger than you are and I'm still trying to figure out my space in the world as an adult, as a survivor of abusive familial relationships, and as a woman who still looks for the good in people despite all of it. It is very difficult to identify with a lot of the people that I look up to, so thank you for showing me that it's possible to do great good for others while knowing and celebrating your own worth.
Carrie, you probably won’t see this, but when you talked about your fair share of JD’s and the lyrics in Seventeen reprise, I felt that as well. I am 24, just now finding these songs and wishing I had this at 17 so I could have fought back, too, from my Heathers and my JDs. I’m sure there are many others that would agree. Thank you for bringing these characters to life and shining a (real) light on the beauty they bring to us off stage. You are simply wonderful, gifted, and beautiful woman in every way. And I’m glad you made it through and had a chance to win your own way in the future through a medium you love.
I have a Tshirt that says "Kind is the new cool". Unfortunately, the world isn't interested in being cool these days. Kindness costs nothing, I don't understand why so many people act like it does. Unfortunately, I did read some of the messages that you're referencing and, while I was hoping that you hadn't seen them, I get the impression that you did see them. We all have our detractors for one reason or another, and seeing their words can eat at you, no matter how hard you try to ignore them. You are fortunate, though, to have a good support system available to you and thousands of fans who would stand in line to help remind you that the negative opinions are a small minority. Thank you for being so honest and open about the past JDs in your life. It is so refreshing to hear you talk so honestly about these relationships and how they affected you. I know I have JDs in my life (not necessarily boyfriends, but people who are like that) and I struggle with fighting back and making myself heard. This is the way I should be approaching those situations.

It always worried me how many people in the Heathers fandom ship “JD/Veronica” and openly ask for a JD as a boyfriend. This is why it’s so important you addressed your own past JDs and how toxic and damaging those relationships can be. I hope your very self-aware portrayal of Veronica will help see especially young girls how toxic a JD is and hopefully saves a few girls from falling into the trap of abusive men.

You may not be Barrett, but you are Carrie who is just as special and just as talented and deserves this role just as much as anyone else. You give girls like me something to aspire to be. There was a production of Heathers in my area last year and I signed up to audition to go for the role of Veronica but a week prior to the audition I cancelled it, all because I didn't feel like I looked the part as I am what you wrote on instagram a "chubby" girl, now seeing yourself portray such an influential character really makes me wish I did go and audition. You're giving a world of young women, and also young men so much hope you are truly inspiring we love you!

wow being a young teenager who is a size 10-12 and is curvy and tall this really spoke to me. It is so beautiful to see curvier girls in theater. Like you it is a dream of mine to be in musical theater. Veronica is a character I can personally relate to in a way. As I'm walking through the school corridors I literally sing beautiful in my head haha! I love this show and you in it, you are inspirational and an amazing role model for young girls. Can't think of a better actress to play such a role. You deserved it with youre talent. I aspire to be in your shoes someday! (also you were an amazing Wednesday!)
Honestly, the Heathers fandom is probably one of the most voracious fan bases I've seen in my life. They bitch and moan (pun intended) at different productions if they make the musical their own, yet they bitch and moan if they use things like original choreography. I remember listening to Big Fun from the last off - broadway performance where Charissa was Veronica and literally 90% of the comments were comparing her to Barrett. Barrett is not the only actress in the world. Other girls can play Veronica. Who cares if you're not Barrett? You're Carrie Hope Fletcher, and as far as I'm concerned, Carrie Hope Fletcher is flawless, talented, kind, and a whiny fandom will ever change that. Keeping being you and shine a light. As an American fan for-god, how long has it been? About 6, 7 years? I truly feel as if we have grown together as people. I am so proud of where you are today and the woman you have become. I just want to tell you how much you and your videos have meant to me through my teen years and into my early adulthood. Now, at 21, I can go back and appreciate where we both were when I started watching, when the description was “under your bed” and you had a surprise clone named Errica, and a little bit later when you did the TINS project. (I still have a Rawry shirt, btw.) Break a leg as Veronica, love. You’re the best you there ever will be!
I'm a 27 year old science teacher and school and I see some of the horrible ways teenagers can treat each other. I'm inspired by you Carrie and have been for years! I try and convey a similar message to my students. I probably over share sometimes but I think hearing how someone has dealt with things makes a difference but also try to role model and share how kindness is so much better! I hope I can get through to students the way you reach out to others ♥
One of the best thing about theater and acting is how an actor puts themselves into their character. How different actors put their own spin on things. You're doing your own version of Veronica, and it's effing perfect !! If you were trying to be another Barrett it would't be authentic to you and it wouldn't be authentic for the show either. I think it's sad that people can't see the beauty of the different work that actor and actresses do.

How about we all not speculate avout who was or wasnt abusive. It's Carrie's life and if she felt the need to name names she would have. She has clearly grown a lot and put that part of her life behind her and naming her ex's in the comments helps no one. She's a wonderful grown woman who deserves to move forward, not look back.
I just wanted to say thank you for something - when you talked about how the show has a lot of meaning for you because you've had your fair share of JD's (manipulative, aggressive, and violent) because I'm 24 and was in a long relationship (from 16-22 years old) with someone like that and I was in that relationship for so long, and it started so young, that I'm only just now starting to deal with the reprecussions of that relationship. I lived with them and it was a nightmare and I never stood up for myself. I ended the relationship the same way you did, way too polite for what they deserved. You are far too kind and have too beautiful a soul to have had to go through that but thank you for talking about it - even if it's only a little bit here and there - because I understand how hard it is to say those words and admit that things weren't fine. What I never realized about relationships like that until I was in one is that not every moment is bad, and that's why it's so easy to get trapped by their sweet moments where you really do feel like they love you even though they prove time and time again that they can't because if they did they wouldn't have the BAD moments. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, but you made me feel like I wasn't alone, and for that - thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I LOVE when JD’s actor (in this case Jamie) is really a lover and really affectionate because it makes the scenes where he’s loving and vulnerable with Veronica so much more intense. Especially in songs like Seventeen in a setting like West End Live where you see all of the little details like how intensely he looks at her and how tightly he’s holding her hand and so many things that you can miss from an audience perspective looking at a stage. Ugh it makes me SWOON!
Also Carrie you are a QUEEN and so talented and kill it as Veronica don’t let anyone tell you otherwise 💙💙💙

Veronica is an epitome of the average high school student and seeing a person like you in the role is very awe inspiring. You do you girl and you play the role like you. I've only just really got into Heathers by listening to the soundtrack but I was also in a relationship with a manipulative guy when I was 19 and also never stood up to him. I didn't even get to break up with him. So listening to Veronica win is the best thing. Our love is God reminds me of my ex so much (minus the murder) and getting to hear Jd lose is everything. I've not really listened to anything else in the last 5 months. It's been over a year now and I'm safe, strong, loved and happy but I do wish I'd been stronger then like Veronica 💜

HI Carrie! I am a middle school teacher. I teach sixth grade so eleven and twelve year olds. This last class I had was particularly Heather-like. There weren't enough Veronicas to fight back to shift the vibe of the class, and it was heartbreaking to see those girls (and boy-Veronicas too) feel defeated. I am so glad you are making videos like this because I know my students watch your videos too and feel like they have someone in their corner who is fighting for them when they feel like they don't have a voice. So thank you for being that positive voice and for proclaiming a message where people are kind to one another. I think the world needs to hear that more often.
tbh when i first heard you were playing veronica i wasn't sure if you'd fit the part, but i hadn't seen you play a role like that before so i was interested to see you do something different. when i saw you sing seventeen for the first time i was sold on you as veronica and as someone who has been watching your videos for a very long time and have seen your relationships come and go i love that this role is empowering you and letting you overcome that part of your life!
