    Learn more about the music:
Ustad Bahauddin Dagar is a torchbearer of the dagarvani dhrupad, known for its patient, meditative approach. He is the world’s leading master of the rudra veena (‘roaring veena’), still considered by many to be the king of Indian instruments. Though rare today, its even, austere tone remains linked with a certain universal purity, close to the essence of Indian classical.
Some trace the Dagar family lineage back to master musicians of the 16th century, and Ustad Bahauddin studied under his father Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and his uncle Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. He describes the relationship: “His method of teaching was subtle and mysterious...he would give a student a few key phrases that captured its soul. Then he would ask him to work on them till the spirit of the raga revealed itself. And, we did find that once we had mastered the key to a raga, the whole raga opened itself up effortlessly when we sat down to play.”
Bahauddin’s musical style is marked by an unobtrusive eloquence, and he regularly performs with no amplification, harking back to a pre-technological age when musicians played longer and slower. But he also draws creative energy from dhrupad’s status as a living form - it may be India’s oldest surviving style of classical music, but many consider it to be the most highly evolved by virtue of this. He seeks to represent his tradition as a full person, with a reputation for high-quality teaching across the global veena community. Listen to more of Bahauddin here:
    -Patdeep (Pt 1) | • Ustad Bahauddin Dagar ...
-Vardhani (with Pelva Naik) | • Masters of Dagarvani |...
Patdeep is an afternoon raga. It draws from Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPNS and an avroh [descent] of SNDPmgRS. The vadi [king note] is Pa, and the shuddha Ni differentiates it from the similar Raag Bhimpalasi. It somewhat resembles the Carnatic Raga Gowrimanohari. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

    Heavenly Been player!
Wonder what it must have been like for the young Ustad to know that unless he carried forward this timeless tradition of Been, it would be lost in the annals of history. And then to have put in such arduous riyaz and to now be carrying forward this daunting legacy so ably shows the stuff he is made of.
The grandeur of ancient Indian musical tradition shimmers in every stroke he plays on his Been. My eternal gratitude and deep respect to him!

What a wonderful pensive mellow of supplication. It uses komal ga; and the rest are shuddha swaras; uses no re and dha in the ascendence; and uses all seven notes in avarohana. Therefore, its mela-kartaa is gauree-manohari of the Karnataka tradition.

such a pristinely beautiful prayer is heard in Ustad Bahuddin's rendering. And the rudra veena is a majestic instrument no doubt. Just that the pakhaway player, seems to be very intent in dominating the proceedings. A balanced level of playing would have been good. Going berserk on the percussion may be okay in a solo, but just tilts a performance like this out of balance. But the way Ustad Dagar just smiles and let the percussionist go just because he is itching to , demonstrates his {ustad dagar's} accomodative nature. and also his seniority.

Dagar style Rudra veena is a lot bigger and heavier than veenas of other gharanas. It is not possible to hold it above the shoulder without being really uncomfortable. Plus this style is a unorthodox style.

ustadji was excellent as usual, but the pakhwaj playing was an abomination. Completely against the mood of the raag.

I think the word abomination would be rude rather the pakhwaj was dominating in this performance

Certainly. The pakhwaz playing was against the mood of the raga. The rudraveena was delicate and the pakhwaz was noisy.
