Shot in a disused warehouse in Wardour Street London, March 1983. Filmed by Howard Guard (who also directed the iconic Maxell tape advertisements), the end sequence of the band asleep in the back of the limousine was, according to Guard, very much for real. Finally wrapped up as dawn was breaking through. Poignant message with the scattered sleeves....single taken from the album Burning From The Inside.

In parties!
@@bridgettebutler624 I am not authorized to award anything. But If I get it. Authorization? I'll send a certificate for best remark to this question. Which oddly enough won a different award I am not going to be mean. I'M IN PARTIES like the girl Eddie. Peters brother? was talking about all the Time.
Plot twist: she wasn't in parties.
In the song and British slang, 'parties' refers to bit parts (usually uncredited) in movies. She's that person who is on the screen for less than a minute, but you recognize them from other movies where they were on the screen for less than a minute.

The definitive goth band. Peter Murphy is seriously the coolest.
Birthday party my mate Melbourne
Rozz & sisters of mercy
I saw Peter Murphy touring maybe ten years ago. After the show, he was brooding in the tour bus with no lights on smoking a cigarette in the dark before he came out to do the meet and greet. I like thinking he's never changed.
maybe only Ian can beat him imho
Daniel Ash >>>
*whispers into the wind* never forget Peter Murphy's cheek bones.
Kris Smith never forget 🤘🏻
Pete Murphy looks like an actual skull himself he doesn't need makeup...he's the mask i want for next Halloween.🎃🕯️💀⚰️
okay, no one can argue with that
They should be registered as deadly weapons IMO
@@LeDisGoFreak77 he needs a sandwich.
I went into my normal lunch spot located in the downtown area of a normal, Southern California city. There he was: a tall, slender, pale red headed man . He wore tortoishel sunglasses, a dark tweed trench coat and ankle boots. No one noticed the guy but me. I carefully approached trying not to bother him but I couldn't resist. "Are you David J?". "Yes" he answered in a light, low voice. He got his coffee right then. I proceeded to geek out, telling him that I was a lifelong Bauhaus, Love and Rockets and Tones on Tails fan. He thanked me very graciously as if it wasn't as the first time anyone had recognized in public. Clearly no one had that day and maybe it makes sense but I'm glad I did.
Angeleno here. What was he doing in Downtown L.A.?
He was thinking “I wasn’t in Tones on Tail, but thanks anyway.” 😂 I met him back in ‘95. He signed my brother’s dollar bill and then started burning it.
Remembering when I heard this, thinking this was the *coolest* thing ever recorded.
Because it is.
This song is great, but In my opinion Bauhaus masterpiece is Bella Lugosi’s dead … way beyond its time
It still is.

@Hunter Vonnegut tip 1: underground bands never tell anyone they are underground
I will always and forever feel very lucky to have been a teenager in the 80's. I was a huge Bauhaus fan.
I feel lucky just by being able to appreciate their music now. perhaps I won't ever do it in the manner you did but this music is ageless and it will be passed on to many generations
+RetroJoe Did you ever get to see them in concert? I feel like that would have been so cool.
Never did. 😕
RetroJoe Ditto. That and taking too much LSD whilst listening to their b-sides! :S
BTW: Are you interested in buying Kevin's new book? JFC: He's asking $195 U.S. (Not including shipping for something that's 13 lbs)!!! It's like "Do I pay bills - - or do I buy this book?"
Me too . Amen !
if David bowie and joy division had a child this is what there music would sound like
ummm no.
David Bowie and Mary Shelley maybe
Gina Herrera Peter Murphy is the godfather of Goth... David Bowie wishes he could..

Gina Herrera there's literally nothing better than your description. They were innovative, but also had that gloomy minimalist vibe 👌🏼
I used to get ready to go out at night to this song, on my “getting ready for the club” mix on cassette. Also on that cassette was the cure:close to me, the cult: she sells sanctuary, Siouxsie and the banshees: spellbound, and a bunch of other stuff. Still love this song, and I go see Peter and/or Bauhaus as often as possible.
i wish wecould have dated back then. that mix tape is soundtrack of my high school late nights in LA.
@@someguythatlookslikeme8306 I also live in L.A., although I didn’t move here until I was 20, but used to go to Helter Skelter, scream, club fuck, dragonfly, etc. and go to shows up and down sunset.
Which version of Close To Me - the one on The Head On The Door or the 7" single remix released September 1985? The latter has the creaking door at the start and the brass section. Sounds like a great mixtape, I had something similar.
in the 80´s ?

No one in today's music scene even comes close to this band's level of cool. This video is a visual and aural masterpiece.
@Hunter Vonnegut Definitely not

@ɹǝxxɐɯǝɟᴉl pǝllᴉdʞɔɐlq HELLTWINK Those Poor Bastards..."folk Goth" they are pretty suck tbh....good music STILL EXIST, IT JUST WENT UNDERGROUND MY FRIEND!
About Marilyn Monroe, the reference to Loonatik & Drinks was Murphys homage to the short movie legends, who inspired the video concept. I agree with you regards to the cinematography, aura and production of the video. Way ahead of its time.
Miss dark 80's . Best music decade , best parties ever . miss that era
Right, it's my 18/20.....what good music at this time... class, new, and black and vampire romantisme.....all was possible and we were beautiful.....Londons was destroy but so much more fun.....
Dark 80s is the best 80s.
Dark Wave.
yeah I miss those days.. I used to live in Europe during my teens... what years
As far as music goes the 80's was probably the bravest when it came to musical experimentation and subject matter. The whole decade was a floodgate.
I'll be 54 in July. Thank you Bauhaus for always reminding me of shadows and darkness...
Cheers fellow July Kid... and Bauhaus fan..
51 coming for me...
Same!
You can really hear the Jamaican dub influence in this song. All three members were huge fans of Dub music from the 50's and 60's.
Fantastic observation.
I'm 13 all over again. I miss the 80s
I was born in 2000, yet I find myself enveloped in a lot of 70s/80s/90s (especially 80s) subcultures, music, and asthetic. I love the dark asthetic as much as the bright colorful looks
Sadly the 21st century has not produced anything remarkable as of yet. I think your generation is out on that particular story. Hopefully the kids you have will have something epic in their formative years.

@@thecocktailian2091 I think what you mean is why isn't there as much diversity in dress and style when you compare the 2010's to previous decades? right? if so, then yeah, you're correct. i would argue that the style of today is a lot less uniform and concrete when compared to the style/aesthetics of previous decades (this includes subcultures as well) because there really isn't a reason to adopt a particular fashion or aesthetic anymore because their isn't any real social utility to it anymore. The reason why goth, new wave, rockabilly and other aesthetics were adopted in the first place was due to the social utility it provided as it enabled individuals to easily spot others within their "in group". nowadays, you don't really need to do that. you can go to social media platforms and find like minded individuals who like the same things you do. you don't need to dress goth to find other goths, but in the past you had to. i would also say that this has been a net positive for subcultures as there is no longer a need to spend tons of money on expensive clothes in order to be perceived as being in the "in group". i hope i addressed your comment, and i hope whoever reads this has a good day.
@@hari2185 You make some good points, I utterly appreciate your thoughtful response. I would argue fashion is a GIANT part of things. Always has been, for centuries. The punk movement had no money, and their fashion was born from nothing. Early Goth days had access to vintage clothing at an extremely affordable price. Rude Boy/ Skin fashion was just blue collar wear. Sadly it has only become expensive today. Social" Utility" is a curious word, not sure how to interoperate it. Social media has lot of positives, but it also has a lot of negatives. I believe the negatives outweighs the positives. Actual Human interaction has become an oddity. When saying hello to some one on the street is met with fear opposed to just a respondent "hello". Dare to strike up a conversation in a pub or a cafe and one all of a sudden becomes a predator, not just a fellow person. Thoughtful minds like your own is the futures fortune, I hope there are enough of you.
peter murphy has such a unique visual appearance it is captivating

I'm not saying that Peter Murphy might be the prettiest man of the 80's

But I think it really hard.
Everyone claiming they are goth but their playlist is everything but this
Gotta love the akward close-ups and stares of 80's music videos
At least they are not doing the duck lips... And turning their face awkwardly to the sides in order to get their cheekbones in a good angle. Or *gulp* twerking, never mind simulating sex on stage... There is so much awkwardness in modern videos that seemingly goes over the head of many, but rest assured it will be pointed out during the next decade.
oddly enough i find them kind of charming

Hail Bauhaus! Quintessential Goth. Haunting; provocative; sexy; catchy; and original. There will never be another quite like them. The atmosphere they conjured up was effortless and unforgettable. Luckily we have the records to remember them by.

One of the most beautiful songs to ever be created.
It’s like punk, reggae, and Bowie came together, and had a goth baby. Awesome!
Yep and I love it :)
Indeed!
I had to come here after seeing an article calling Billie Eilish "goth."
@@yourlocalcryptid5894 I've see it in three different articles talking about her in the last month. I just don't get it. She's an edge-lord pop-singer. I wouldn't even call her emo, much less Goth.
Industry plant
I wouldn't even call emos a type of goth and there not especially when their music comes from the hardcore punk / post-hardcore scene and from bands like rites of spring, Sunnyside real estate, Jimmy eat world, Weezer, they are just a type of pop punk rocker. True emo died long ago when they started ripping off other people's subcultures.
saldiven2009 / Billie Eilish reminds me of a carp struggling to breathe, having been taken out of the water.
I wouldn't really bother with her until she at least graduates high school.
Look up Billie Piper a 90's pop star from the UK and suddenly Billy Elish makes a lot of sense she's not a real person I never really believed in this cloning shitt until I looked at both of them side-by-side... a sad sad heroin junkie clone
I don't think there's a more gothic band than Bauhaus. This song is incredible even today, of course for those who have the sensitivity to understand this proposal.
killed it in the 80's with Bauhaus, no other time like that ever again, very privileged to be in that scene in NYC , brought'em all up Siouxie, Depeche, Smiths...
This guys are so beautiful..
Peter Murphy did idolize David Bowie. so he probably got some of his ideas from him you should hear their version of Ziggy Stardust, he sound exactly lime David Bowie. So yeah Peter Murphy is like David Bowie's Gothic alter ego!!!
Everyone in the U.K. in the 70’s idolised Bowie. Except me, coz I was really young and completely gormless!
Now Murphy's the only surviving alter ego...
and bowie thought their version kicked a lot of ass.
My son & I saw Mr Murphy and the band last nite in New Orleans 2/4/19 at the old Civic Theater. They closed the show with Ziggy Stardust. You had to be there is all I can say🧛🏼♂️

On this day, August 6th 1979, Bauhaus released their first single... Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Bauhaus never fails. Glad I was part of it back in the 80's.
This will forever remind me of an 18 year old guy I met on a school trip in DC. I was 15. He was a new wave looking guy from LI, NY and we were dancing together on a night time school organized boat cruise and we somehow started kissing… I was goth but only knew of Bela Lugosi’s dead.. he told me to listen to this song when I returned home and think of him…I did and it will forever remind me of that kiss on the boat.. 🖤
