Guitar Lesson: How To Play Mayonaise by Smashing Pumpkins

  • The Patreon folks voted, and the winner of this month's Vote-A-Thon is, well, you already know because you're reading this description :P No joke though the Smashing Pumpkins' Mayonaise was hard to get my head around on account of the tuning, which I have figured out is an open E-flat-minor-major-seven chord... so put that in your lunch and try to trade it for a Snickers. I hope you enjoy learning this one - and thank you again Patreon lovelies! :)

"that for me is the meat of this mayonaise, the tuning is bananas foster, but the voicings he achieves with this tuning is nothing short of Miracle Whip." - pure genius. I don't know how you delivered that with a straight face. Thank you for putting this out there, such an awesome song. Great breakdown and even better humor to go along with it.

@@glennbastarache2310 since this is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song and I am just a mediocre or average player I found a way to play this song in standard tuning. The majority of the song is Aadd9 or sus9, F#m, D, D. There is only a variation at the beginning when he sings "we'll try to ease the pain, somehow we'll feel the same ... no one knows, where those secrets go." There I play Bm, G, D twice and then Em, G, Em, F#m, G. Check my video: czcams.com/video/PgbQ39hiDiU/video.html
It might not be the exact note by note reproduction of the song, but for a campfire version it will work.

@@RyanLendt the pain was real. I will say to my recollection that tab did nail both the alt tuning (which matches the one in your video) and it was one of the few when I played along with the CD it was pretty spot on (minus the feedback which I couldn’t really do on my cheap humbucker guitar at the time). So props to whoever did that original tab in the 90s!

I"ve been playing this song incorrectly for years... doing it in standard tuning required a capo for part of the song and the rest never sounded right due to lack of open voicings. Thanks for the tutorial.
Fun fact - I read an interview in a magazine a long time ago that billy got the "noisy noise" from a shitty old guitar that he bought in a pawn shop. Every time he'd stop playing any notes it would feedback horribly, and they decided to incorporate that feedback into a recording. Not a surprise that they were unable to recreate it live.

Anti-fish will be the name of my pop punk band.
Think I’ll leave this insanity to Billy and the Squashes.

That’s amazing - I’ve always just approximated the chords. But my guitar really doesn’t like that tuning - it’s out by the end of the song!

I'll bet $2 you have a strat? Strats do not like to be tuned differently

Ryan Lendt I do, but this one’s a 335 copy, which I thought might be better. What did James Iha use?

I know that Your Finger tip is supposed to touch the string above To mute but many times in songs I see it not being done / called for . How does one know when and when not to use said rule ?

Campfire version? I play this on my acoustic capo 1 in A. I’d be curious how you pull it off. It’s close but not exact but when you’re strumming it all blends together. “)

you gotta dig deep into your pockets and spring for the new $2 level to be in on the vote - you missed the message about that for sure. I believe it's pre-chicken salad. My chainsaw skills are really starting to bloom, but holy crap are my shoulders sore. That's my childhood bert retrieved from my dad's house. I don't know if I ever owned ernie.
