this is what I love about disaster movies, everything happens in the most horrible ways, Trains and cars crash only into gas stations or oil refineries, buildings fall apart in the most gruesome (and structurally impossible) ways, people get killed by the millions instantly, except the stars who always get away even facing impossible odds....but I wouldn't have it any other way. GO earthen vengeance!!!

Why is it that in every disaster movie, Los Angeles is the first to go?
When the twin towers collapsed, New York's streets were covered in a large cloud of dust. So realistically the huge number of buildings and skyscrapers tumbling down in 2012 would cause the entire city to be engulfed in a massive cloud of dust and debris.

When lots of stuff falls down in reality, there's so much dust that you can't see anything at all - but that wouldn't make a very exciting movie; just minutes of thick dust and maybe noises.
I think the (terrible) soundtrack is from the last scene of The Cook The Thief His Wife etc.

I've actually studied how the Earth works. The sorts of disasters presented in 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and San Andreas are pure Hollywood. They're all so badly inaccurate, in fact, that I didn't even bother watching all of either of the first two movies and regret not having done the same with the third.
