  • Wild Bill leaves Independence after killing Davis Tutt and pursues employment as a scout and U.S Deputy Marshal. As Hickok’s notoriety increases, he goes on to serve as Marshal in the rough Kansas towns of Hays and Abilene before joining Buffalo Bill Cody and Texas Jack Omohundro in New York City. This is part 2 of the Wild Bill series. In part one we covered Hickok’s childhood, his time in Bleeding Kansas, his first known gunfight with David McCanles, time spent serving the Union during the war, and the famous duel with Davis Tutt. I’ve always been fascinated by Hickok. Neither a fan nor a hater. The later photos of him seem to reveal a tiredness, resignation. It was like he knew even then his time was short.

He was an “instinct”, or “point” shooter. I think he was VERY accustomed to the balance of those ‘51 Navy Colts as he emptied and reloaded them EVERY morning (I’ve read) in order to insure freshly charged pistols.
Agree with several comments regarding diminishing eyesight, though I believe problems started earlier than believed; hence two pistols immediately accessible for cross or strong side draw, in a sash (allowing for constant adjustment); back to the wall/corner, and the shotgun and derringer backups. Everything geared toward close, immediate combat. Directly in front.
    OUTSTANDING PRESENTATION!
One of the best researched ever IMO. Learned a bunch.
    Thank You 🙏

Brilliant episode mate. Love how you give the different versions of certain events. As I've said before, Hickok is my favourite historical old west figure. Living in Hays and sharing the same profession, hearing Wild Bill's stories and then being able to drive downtown and go to the actual location where they occurred was pretty amazing. The downtown has historical markers naming bars and government buildings of that time. It also puts some amazing context when reading the jail logs of prisoners that Hancock signed in himself.. Paused at 2:04 as Full Metal Jacket came out my senior year of High school in 1986/87 and I’ve seen it all or partly about 40 times, what Gunnery sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) says is “God was here before the Marines, so you can give your heart to Jesus but your ass belongs to the corps!”. A pivotal scene that establishes Joker’s (Matthew Modine) as a badass follows that with Hartman baiting him by asking “You do believe in the virgin Mary don’t you?”
    Continue, Sir.
Edit: I never gave it much thought but even a heathen like Gunny Hartman knew and verified that Jesus is God.

plus the battle of Washita was a massacre and pure murder. Black Kettle had previously survived the Sand creek massacre in Colorado where he was camped with chief white antelope both of them old man peace chiefs, camping where the army told them to as they were trying to keep out of the way of the fighting, their bands were old people and widows and children, most of the young warriors had deserted them to follow chief Tall bull of the dog soldiers who were the southern Cheyenne involved with the fighting in Colorado and the southern plains. Black Kettle had asked the army where his band should camp where they would be safe and was told to camp at the Washita and fly the American flag above his tipi which he did even though chivingtons men at Sand creek killed white antelope and a bunch of women waving the American flag and a white surrender flag at the same time. Custer chased the dog soldiers all over and got his ass handed to him several times and because he was trying to be a big hero in the west because of his presidential aspirations so he wiped out a peaceful village camped where they were told to who had more women then men and very few weapons even. He did the rush attack at the little bighorn for the same reason but those Lakota and Cheyenne had weapons and warriors plenty and Custer received the justice he deserved!
