Actor and Alum Willem Dafoe Speaks at UW-Milwaukee Commencement

- Four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe gives the commencement address to graduates of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on May 22, 2022. Before his speech, Dafoe is awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the university, where he studied theater in the 1970s.
“Be at peace with yourself, find what you love and practice it anyway you can,” Dafoe tells the graduates. “Serve others, make every step a pleasure and trust it will take you where you need to be.”

God, I absolutely love this man. One of the most genuine and authentic actors to grace us all with his talents. One of the most underrate actors, but his skill and talent speaks far beyond that. He's lived the life most of us actors wish we could, working with directors and learning new insights and creative approaches to characters to help bring their story to life. I was not one of the students in the audience as I graduated Union College back in 2017, but congrats to all the graduates of UWM Class of 2022!!!

@@danim955 Very true, although he pulled a fast one by switching to the right for some of the undergraduates. Unfortunately the undergrad with the green goblin figurine on his cap didn't get a fist bump.

How do you do it Willem? How do you get into The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee without even graduating high school as a high school drop out? How do you get a doctoret's degree in the arts without even stepping one foot into a classroom or lecture hall or studying for hours and hours working toward a doctoret's degree? Either your well connected or your just lucky based on your celebrity status you hold.
You get a GED. UWM is not a very hard school to get into. He went to the school for two years and is easily the most successful alum without graduating. It demonstrates how little a degree has to do with real world success. Don’t be jealous of others successes or have an elitist mentality just because they didn’t take the path most travelled.

I was there at the ceremony and I was also there when he visited campus to talk with the students at Peck School of the Arts, where I currently study.
Yes, he did not graduate from UWM, but he did attend, which technically makes him an alumni. Honorary degrees are given to individuals that are nominated by the faculty and then the nomination goes through five levels that usually don’t allow the nomination to go forward, and lastly is approved by the chancellor of the school. Willem’s nomination did go forward.
He is a celebrity, that’s undeniable, but his body of work is substantial, legendary even. It’s the work that he has put into his craft that led the faculty to nominate him and approve of this degree.
Plus, it was very nice for the art students to see someone like him in the flesh, me being one of them.
If you have any more questions I’d ask the UWM faculty. They’ll have plenty of answers for you.
