Hello, dear viewers. We're happy to present this new, more detailed video about the First World War. This will be followed by a new video on the Second World War.
    Two quick notes:
    1) Arthur Balfour was indeed only a minister -- not prime minister -- at the time he published the letter to Lord Rothschild.
    2) The name François-Ferdinand is the French version of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.
We hope you like the video. If you'd like to support our mission of making history more accessible to the general public, consider donating to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/geohistory

This is one of the best summaries of WWI that I’ve seen or read. I think what makes it great is the changes on the world map. I’m a historian so when I read historical documents, I always check maps to mark as I read. This helps with understanding the historical consequences of what and why events unfolded. Kudos. I think these videos should be shared in history classes and the students should break it down by decade. Well done.

They didn't say anything about heroic Serbia and their defence. The fact is that Serbia is attacked from 10 time much populated Austro-hungary. Such a little nation which survived retreat across Albania mountains where all european countres wrote off Serbians. At the that time, all the allies was admired Serbia, how such a little nation survived and won in WWI. Serbia suffered the worst casualties, as a proportion of its population, of all nations in World War One. Out of a population of 4 million, Serbia lost 1.1 million people in the war, or 27% of its population and over 60% of its male population 265,000 Serbian soldiers died or 25% of all mobilised men

    • @bigeneingers
      @bigeneingers Před 8 měsíci

@milosbajovic2971 I beg to differ. Serbia is a little country with a big chip on its shoulder. They were responsible for WWI and they have contributed NOTHING to the betterment of the world: no scientists, artists, musician, architecture, mathematics, philosophy or other civilized learning. They were under the boot heel of the Ottoman Empire and they never evolved. Go back to your cave and start improving yourselves.

The video's use of maps really helped me understand the historical context and consequences of events, and it's great to see others having the same experience. I think this video would be an excellent resource for students in history classes, as it provides a clear and concise summary of the war. I also appreciate the insights shared in the comments, such as the one about Germany's struggles to find useful allies. It's clear that there's still so much to learn about this complex and important period in world history. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

    A few things to note:
    1. If History Matters is accurate, the Schillfen Plan was initially reversed at the start, this meant Germany was going to initially focus on Russia before going after France.
So why the total 180 where Germany focused on France before going after Russia?
The Russo/Japanese War of 1904-1905 which saw the Russian military get completely humiliated by Japan, after this Germany no longer saw Russia as an immediate concern/threat.
    2. Why was Italy initially neutral?
As the Triple Alliance treaty was a defensive pact and Austria threw the 1st punch by declaring war on Serbia, Italy wasn't obligated under treaty obligations to help Austria.
In fact, Austria's 1908 annexation of Bosnia nearly caused Italy to leave the Triple Alliance.
    3. Why did Germany help Austria even though Austria technically threw the 1st punch?
Because Germany was of the thinking that if their Austro-Hungarian allies were left to their own devices that Austria-Hungary would lose the war by 1917 at the latest.
    3. The reason why the other powers of Europe objected to the Treaty Of San Stefano was the Bulgaria that was proposed.
This Bulgaria would've been a Russian puppet that would've given Russia access to the Mediterranean Sea.
For the other powers of Europe, it was a step too far:
1.The UK and France objected as Russia with access to the Mediterranean Sea would potentially make Russia a threat to the African colonies of the UK and France and possibly the Suez Canal.
    2. Austria-Hungary objected because they felt the Treaty Of San Stefano gave Russia too much influence in the Balkans.

In my history class in the US we were taught that there were 5 main reasons for WW1: Alliances, Imperialism, Militarism, Nationalism, and Assassination. However even in my High School World History class they didn’t teach about the specific events that led to WW1. They didn’t teach about the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire or the German and Italian wars of Unification. I didn’t learn about the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) or the Balkan Wars which happened right before WW1. I’m not sure if they even told us why the Archduke was assassinated.
At the end of the war school focused mainly on Wilson’s 14 Points, the League of Nations, and the Treaty of Versailles. We didn’t learn about the German Civil War, Greco-Turkish War, or the Polish Soviet War. The only conflict after the war we learned about was the Russian Revolution. I didn’t realize how violent the aftermath of the war was. I guess they didn’t want to focus too much on things that weren’t relevant to the US.

But that war shows that Suvorov could have been right in "Icebreaker" book stating that Stalin planned to conquer whole Europe. And now 100 years later there is another Russian idiot who want to conquer one country by another with a slogan "Go west" - like that 30yo song. Good news is now "westerners" do not leave it as an "oriental" war and care more... so far. We'll see what happen.

Nedic's Serbia imprisoned Jews and Roma in the following concentration camps:
      Banjica Concentration Camp (near Belgrade)

The "final solution" of the Jewish question was carried out at the Fairgrounds with the arrival of a gas chamber-van from Germany. One of the first such vans was sent to Belgrade. As early as March and May 1942, every morning except Sundays and holidays, a van was loaded with Jewish children, women, and the elderly who were told to move them. Seemingly kind, and information can be found that children were even given sweets on board, just like Ratko Mladic, who treated Bosniak children in Srebrenica the same way.
In total, some estimate that as many as 80,000 people were killed in concentration camps throughout Nedic's Serbia from 1941 to 1944.
The Serbian propaganda machinery, which can be compared to the Nazi one in terms of success, is gaining momentum, as is the revisionism of the genocidal actions of Serbian governments in the Second World War, similar to the wars of the 1990s. Revisionism, which seeks to make Serbs the only victims, requires attention and honest disclosure. Serbia needs to experience catharsis. While other countries, including Croatia, have accepted that regimes and individuals have committed crimes and are not trying to revise them, the fact is that Serbian politicians still live in myths and legends.

This video is amazing. Not only does it explain what happened in WWI in a nutshell, in doing so it reveals interesting things not many of us in the West ever really learned in school, like why the Serbians and the Armenians, who literally have very little culture or language connection to Russia, seem to share an affinity and alliance with them that endures 100 years later, long after the original reason of sharing a mutual enemy (Germany, and Turkey) began. Even the term "balkanization" comes from this. Such simple things lead to much more complex and grander things in the future. Without Russian aspirations and a without a weakening Ottoman Empire, the axis of Balkan politics might have centered on Austro-Hungarian conflicts with the Ottomans once again, and Ottoman expansion north of the Caucasus, "liberating" the Georgia, Astrakhan, etc. In an alternate 2022, the Serbs and Armenians may have shared their affinity to a more liberal Ottoman Empire who fought off Russian expansion and Austro-Hungarian aggression. Just one of many different alternate histories of course...

My comment was that this video explains how that came to be, in that they simply shared a common enemy. That's where the *special* connection that makes them different from Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, etc. comes from. If you are telling me that Serbia has a special connection to Russia *before* 1900s, something totally different from Croatians, Poles, etc. I'm all ears. Because we do not see special relationships between Croats and Russians or Poles and Russians even though Polish is actually closer in language to Russian than Serb. Good basic "cliff notes" telling of WW1. Always valuable to remind people who ignored or disliked history (and geography) when in school so that past history is understood. Learning and understanding history is essential to understanding current events and hopefully not repeating the tragic past.
Obviously when you see these alliances and the WWI outcome, one understands how it set the stage for WWII unfortunately. You can also see how Europe, through colonialism, formed the powderkeg in the Arab Middle East, sowing the seeds of much hatred among the Persian/Arab population against Western influence, and Palestine/Israel.
The Balkans/Slavic areas have always been a powderkeg in turmoil with changing borders it seems due to ethnic nationalism.
Let us hope and pray that Russia's invasion into the Ukraine isn't the preamble to WWIII. Will mankind ever learn from its mistakes?

Firstly, the Principality of Bulgaria, which was rather independent with an independently functioning parliament (just the knyaz had to be approved of by the Ottomans and Bulgaria had to pay a yearly tribute). Secondly, Eastern Rumelia, which was more closely tied with the empire. The other lands of San-Stefano Bulgaria were indeed returned to the sultan.
