Fun to see the old stuff. My 1st tele boot in 1982 was a pair of 1950's ankle high leather lace up downhill boots that Gary Mechan the local wasatch cobbler converted to a telemark sole for me. I then skied Asolo extremes and the scarpa boot niece boot that you showed in the video. The 2 buckle neon scarpa boot was called the boot sauvage.
I started working at Black Diamond in 92 and tested the 1st prototype terminator. We then took a pair to the band saw and cut the cuff down and had Gary Mechan cut down the inner boot to make the 1st T2 prototype, which I 1st tested out trying to get the 2nd Tele descent of the Grand Teton with Andrew McClean.
Brings back fond memories. Thanks for the overview.

Great tour through the early history! Had a few of the leather models, and rocked my teal green Terminators until last year when the bellows split.

Great video! I went from the purple "toe cutter" Terminator to the black "toe crusher/heel squeezer" Terminator and finally found some comfort with the Bumblebee Terminator.

Toe cutters and crushers are great ways to remember them by..hahah. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking the time to write in. - Madsen

Thanks so much, that was very interesting to know!

Awesome work, so important to have this stuff documented. One more addition for the '90s is the iridescent blue T2. They came out in 1998, I'm pretty sure. And maybe the brown T3 at the same time too?

Thank you. I originally was going to run the vid through to NTN but it would have been a long one haha! I’ll for sure do a follow up video that include those as well though. Thx for checking it out, appreciate it! - Madsen

@@FreeheelLifeYeah I hear ya, if part 2 had just NTN, it would be pretty damn short. But man, good luck sorting out what went on with T3 and T4...

@@simplemachinetelemark4960 - for sure. Some of these get all sorts of mixed up along the way. Haha. I enjoy doing this stuff though so it’ll be fun as I’m able to piece things together. Appreciate you checking it out.

I was hoping to see my bumblebees. Rode them until last year when I broke my leg on an icy turn.

Excellent visuals on the evolution of burliness in tele boots! What a collection!
But I thought the Asolo Telebreeze was the first plastic tele boot?

Glad you dug it. Definitely same time period but I believe after. I’ll check my work and do some more research on Asolo’s boot and get back to you. 🤘🏻

Telebreeze came a year or two after the first Terminator. I worked in the “tele department” of a large outdoor store when the Terminator came out…it was the only boot we sold that the distributor would take back any that we didn’t sell…they were in high enough demand that the distributor could easily find someone to buy them. Most of us in the shop were skeptical of the plastic boots though, preferring to stick with Asolo Race, Merrel Supercomps, Scarpa Sauvage (finest example of leather boot building there ever was!), or various lace ups. That same year we saw some prototypes of other plastic boots from other manufacturers (doomed to failure)…we never thought that plastic would take over the world like it has!

@@johns3106 Good to know. I rented a pair of Telebreezes from a local shop and found them to be a smokin’ hot pile of garbage (sorry Paul P.). Turned me off to plastic for years. Went back to my Asolo Extremes. It took renting some Garmont Liberos years later to change my mind on plastic.

    • @jasonwooden
      @jasonwooden Před rokem

@@FreeheelLife Regardless, the Terminator was the first SUCCESSFUL plastic tele boot. No one talks about the tele breeze, except as a joke.

For sure. I’ve got one that was a wall model - fun piece of steamy goodness. Haha.
