  • Pokemon Competitive Singles is a world where various things are possible.
    Some Pokemon thrive due to their fantastic Type combination.
    Others thrive in spite of their Terrible type combination.
    Let's explore why Tyranitar, Celebi and Volcarona are great Pokemon with terrible typing.

    Some will never figure out how to get Tyranitar in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Tyranitar Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Tyranitar Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
    Arceus exists.
    The below text is very relevant to many people.
    Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
    Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
    Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
    Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

      @@andre-8420fire bug isn’t that good offensively. Fire sure yeah fire is strong offensively and defensively ( even if it’s not the best at either or even the second best balanced type fairy and water are both stronger but fire is still pretty good) in particular being able to hit steel and resist fairy are two very powerful traits. Bug doesn’t hit anything fire is. Resisted by super effectively though and it only gets rid of 1 weakness which is ground and in an entirely irrelevant way since rock is almost always paired with ground due to perfect neutral coverage so you end up taking more damage. It’s very common to ditch bug stab for other moves like giga drain which hits waters and rocks hard. The only real thing fire bug is good at is bullying grass types and yeah sure volc quad resisting serp basically forced it to run hp rock or risk auto losing at times but that happens a lot to serp that It just enables the opponent to setup on it endlessly because they can handle its lead storms even at +6. This is why you bring out the snake lategame anyway. Volc isn’t some rare specimen to have the niche of walling a Mon who doesn’t have coverage and has a pretty poor offensive stab typing.

    A once-unified authority now found itself embroiled in a hoof-slapping civil war. The Horse Council, known for its impeccable judgment on all matters equine, was at a crossroads.
    At the heart of this uproar was none other than the fake horse, Horsea. Despite sporting a rather awkward cardboard mane and an unmistakably clunky gait, Horsea had garnered significant financial backing from the enigmatic Old Money, a mysterious paradox form Pokemon of Gholdengo. This support extended further, with an unholy alliance formed between Horsea and the fiery Ponyta, whose hooves were known to spark literal flames of rebellion.
    Their target? Magcargo, the most recent appointee to the Horse Council. A stallion of impeccable pedigree, Magcargo had ascended to the position by virtue of possessing the legendary High Horsepower, which granted him unparalleled wisdom and wit. However, Horsea saw Magcargo as a threat to its mission to uphold the outdated traditions of the Council, viewing him as a disruptive force of change.
    As the council chamber echoed with the clattering of hooves and the occasional whinny of discontent, the stage was set for a showdown of epic proportions. Magcargo, with his dignified air and twinkling eyes, stood resolute against the comically clumsy Horsea, who could barely muster a convincing nicker, let alone a battle cry.

    Magcargo is a limbless, gastropod mollusk Pokémon consisting almost entirely of bright red magma. Its oval eyes are large and yellow with small pupils and extend upward from its head. It has a bulbous snout and a wide mouth, with two drops of magma dangling from each side of its upper jaw. Magcargo's back is protected by a gray, spherical shell composed of hardened, but brittle magma, forming irregular lumps and plates. Marcargo can store fire energy in its shell. A streak of fire leaks from the side of its shell. Magcargo's lower body is amorphous and covered in bubbles of magma.
    Magcargo's internal body temperature can reach over 18,000 °F (10,000 °C), causing it to evaporate water on contact. Flames circulate throughout its body, occasionally spouting through cracks in its shell. While its shell is brittle enough to be shattered with a slight touch, Magcargo can reform its body by dipping itself in magma. It can be found in mountainous regions and has been living in volcano craters for tens of thousands of years. According to one folklore, when the wild Marcargo population suddenly increases, it's a sign that a volcano eruption is coming.

    • @Redfork2000
      @Redfork2000 Před měsícem

      When you realize the Pokédex claims Magcargo evaporates water on contact, but in practice Water evaporates Magcargo on contact (x4 weakness). I think Magcargo having an ability making it immune to the Water type would've been fun. It's probably not enough to make it competitively viable, but it'd be a fun nod to the Pokédex entries that state this, and would at least take away one of Magcargo's x4 weaknesses.

    TBH Besides the Rock weakness Fire/Bug isn’t really that bad of a typing, you have a nice amount of resistances (namely to Fighting and Fairy) and hit all types expect Fire for neutral damage.
    While your weak to Water and Flying those types aren’t ran all that often as coverage (and most Water moves are special so Quiver Dance can help patch up that weakness).

Its def one of the darks made against Psychic, (and it being rock MIGHT be in part because the dominant type in gen 1 is Normal) and as time goes on almost everything good about Ttar have to do with what those two type offers. Dark stab spam, Pursuit, Sandstorm spdef boost all will be missing from Ttars toolset had it didnt have that specific type combo

      U turn and more powerful bug pokemon being introduced just ruined Celebi. Dark typing becoming more and more menacing over time did not help either. Weather metas also murder Celebi bc it has trouble with both sun teams (oof auch fire) and water/hail (oof auch ice beam everywhere). I dont think its just a case of power creep shutting Celebi out, the actual issue is that the new metas tended to hit Celebi's weak points incidentally

    Tyranitar actually has the best typing it can have, as Sand Stream does NOT grant immunity to sandstorm, meaning if it terastalizes away from Rock, Ground, or Steel, it’s hurt by its own weather. Additionally, if it terastalizes into anything other than Dark, it opens itself up to Prankster.
    Combined, if it terastalizes into any of the other 14 types, it immediately gets ground down by its own sandstorm and opened up to Prankster, meaning it effectively cannot make use of the gimmick of generation 9.

    I saw a comment on another video stating that Tyranitar was able to bypass its bad tying for a while due to STAB Pursuit letting it lock down its good matchups, and now that Pursuit is gone it actually has to stand up to its switch-ins.
    On a different note, Hisuian Arcanine was able to overcome its flawed Fire / Rock typing in VGC, winning something like five or six Regulation E tournaments with its combo of Intimidate, STAB Rock Slide, STAB Flare Blitz, and Extreme Speed. Arguably the best pokémon in that format.

    One of the worst typings is the Rock/Steel dual type, which lends itself to 2 different x4 weaknesses.
    Of this typing is the horse-adjacent Stakataka, who has strong legs, has the same body shape as a horse, learns high horsepower, and even lets people ride on it if they manage to stay on. I pray this message finds you well, as Old Money has intercepted my previous warning about the aforementioned horse-usurper. I suspect that the HorseMoney coalition has something to gain from letting Stakataka run free despite its outrage of Magcargo being indicted into the horse council before it. Please, take care.

    Hey Jim why are celebi and jirachi legal in gen 3 ou when they are mythical?

    • @a.j7810
      @a.j7810 Před měsícem +3

      Smogon formats in general dont ban pokemon for being part of a "category". Mythicals and even big legendaries as kyurem black are legal if they dont seem overpowered enough for break the game. Meanwhile, in official formats (like VGC or BSS) game freak always bans mythicals (for being too dificult to get) and big legendaries are always banned or limited to a few for team, because some of them can be very strong.This isnt done in smogon because rarity isnt a problem since we play on a simulator and because the tiering system lets you ban the specific big legendaries that can be problematic

    I actually like volcarona's type combination... now that heavy duty boots exists. Rock isn't a very common offensive type besides stealth rock, though you do see rock slide coverage on ground types, I'd say flying isn't the most common offensive type either. Water is fairly common, but usually special attacks from bulky mons. Volcarona also resists fighting, ice and fairy, which are fairly common.

    Maybe a more subtle effect (or not really a problem): but I find it interesting how certain Pokemon in Gen 3 OU manage to be solid, even though their STAB does not match their Special Attack/Attack state. I think Gengar is the best example of this, but a less known example is Entei-way less powerful before the Special Split.

    • @mr.sandman7339
      @mr.sandman7339 Před měsícem +1

      I feel like Kommo-o was really struggling to find its niche when it was first introduced and they kept throwing things at it to try to make it viable: Signature move, Signature omniboost Z-move, a bunch of boosting and support moves, another signature omniboost move, now IronPress. Kommo-o's strength as a pseudo is versatility since it doesn't excel at any one thing statwise. Plus it gets other non-type based immunities depending on which ability you use, which makes it interesting.

Roaring Moon's 4x to fairy and heatran's 4x to ground are other otherwise overpowered pokemon that are somewhat balanced by an obvious weakness... imagine levitate heatran 😯

    I would also mention at least in Gen 3 and before, bad Types aren't AS bad, because Types=Physical or Special. Letting you spec against a type, at least a little.
    Like no giving Celebii a bunch of Def won't save it from big Bug attacks, but it might let it live 1 smaller Bug attack since it knows what to spec for, while in later gens not knowing if the attack with be Physical or Special makes it even more specific.
