Wilco's "At Least That's What You Said": Guitar Lesson

- This solo says a lot. I think Jeff Tweedy wanted to show people that he could do loud guitar stuff as well as anyone else - that he don't need no sideman. I think he's right!

When you're looking out for an Eric Haugen vid to drop and it turns out to be one of your favorite bands! Actually, all of the vids seem to have that quality.
We must both have excellent tastes! Thanks Joe!
This is possibly my favourite guitar solo
Agree!
Story goes Tweedy was really hitting a wall with his drug abuse at this time and they could only get through 2 takes - I *think* the version on the record is take 2.
I have been trying to learn this solo for years. Thank you!!
It’s my pleasure!
It’s impossible to play it just like Jeff - just do the first part, and then do your own thing - that’s what he’d do!
I read somewhere that Jeff was trying to recreate what it felt like to have a panic attack with this solo. Super glad you put the tab up! I'm a relatively new player and am excited I can break this down into pieces and try to learn it
Oh yeah I can totally see that!
Jeff is such a creative guy
Well, it really does sound like a damned panic attack! I never realized why I loved this song so much! It really does capture the ALARM! ALARM! ALARM! I MUST ESCAPE IMMEDIATELY OR I WILL DIE IMMINENTLY! feeling.
more wilco please!!!
Noted!
Fantastic rendition! Really stunning!
Oh, sweet. This is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time.
Yeah! Tweedy tears it up on this one 🙌🏻
His wife bought him guitar lessons from Television’s Richard Lloyd for their anniversary.
@@chadlong1109 My birthday's coming up! I know what I want!
Chad Long I saw Jeff play a solo show in Melbourne Australia earlier this year. A guy in the crowd yelled out Marquee Moon which seemed random at the time. During a break between songs a little later in the show, Jeff impressively busted out the first couple of minutes of Marquee Moon on his acoustic. Makes sense now!!
I can’t believe you tackled this- Eric, you shine brighter on the internet than many realize. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks Patrick!
This one was quite tricky to get close, as you can see! That’s why I had to modify to be more “Haugen.”
Eric Haugen “Haugenized”
@@patrickcarroll1754 Haugened™ hahahaha
it wasnt richard lloyd but Tom Verlaine who gave Jeff a guitar lesson - both Jeff and Nels are huge television fans
Yes! Such a beautiful Crazy Horse guitar track!
Yeah! There's a little bit of "Like A Hurricane" to the way Tweedy attacks this one!
Man, this is a killer song. I never really got into this Wilco album and so I never paid the song much mind but you’ve opened my ears. I may even give it a go!
Yeah it's a cool record!
I like how simple and strange it is compared to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Plus, it's pre-Cline, so there's a brutality to the guitar work on it that's uniquely Tweedy 💀
Eric Haugen I didn’t know that was all Tweedy. It has such a Neil Young vibe.
@@capitaldharma Indeed! Definitely some "Like A Hurricane" in there!
Didn't see this one coming. One of my all time favourite tunes. Thank you
September Surprise! 👻
Yeah, this is a great track - perfect start for that album!
I learned it when you originally posted it, and now I am back again. I want to play it half as well as you did in that intro. I love that you did this lesson. Thank you!
Remember, slow and steady wins the race!
Take you time with it, really engaging with each phrase as you play it - even if you never get it perfect, you'll get the most improvement that way!
Thank you, thank you and thank you again.
It's my pleasure Christopher!
This one is such a great guitar jam!
Dude thank you so much for this!! May be my favorite lead part of all time!
Great lesson, great solo, great sound and great plants! Thank you!
Love the plants. Can't wait for the fireplace winter uploads. Best CZcams guitar teacher ever.
Thanks so much guys!
I can't take credit for the plants - that's my wife's doing! She's got a quite the green thumb!
When you played through it at the top of the vid, I said to myself, "HA! There are those Richard Lloyd pull-offs and pull-ons that Jeff learned!" So Jazzed that you picked one of my favorite Wilco tunes, Eric! Well done, and it'll keep me busy for a while. I keep imagining Jeff just strangling double-stops all over the neck. (PS: I got a Fender Tre-Verb after you 'endorsed' it, and it's great.)
Yeah!
One of these days I gotta book a lesson with Richard Lloyd too - I wonder if he's still offering that service!
One of the highlights of 2018 was Richard wishing me a happy birthday on Facebook - I *think* he knows who I am! Gasp!
CONGRATS!!! How cool is that? I always love it when he reposts my stuff!! And I got a happy birthday too!!! I think I'd be too intimidated to take a lesson from him.
@@maggieo The future is so weird! All in all, it's so great that the lines between celebrity/regular human are getting fuzzier!
Whoa! One of my favorite guitar riffs of all time
Yeah! It's such a great start to the record!
Brilliant. I just watched Jeff's lockdown version from Dec 2020. Great version Eric.
Ooooh I gotta watch that!

Eric, thank you for a great lesson... one of my favorite bands, favorite songs! So great.
Thanks Tao!
I love Wilco so much! Tweedy is truly one of the all time greats!
Brilliant song. Jeff plays with a capo on 5 so cool to see you do it open. Big sound, great tone.
Yeah I transcribed it twice - I watched some live clips where Nels plays it open while Tweedy plays it capo 5, but I’m petty darn sure the album version is sans capo 🤙
Good lord, I can't believe you covered this one - so skronky!
Robert Bodle yes! Kronky is the right word!
Thanks Robert! I always loved this track - such a great way to start a record!
@@EricHaugenGuitar A dramatic opener for sure and compelling live too!
Love Wilco. Great lesson as always! Thanks for sharing Eric.
Thanks Dave!
Yeah I always loved this ragged solo, plus that main theme is so great!
Fabulous. Tweedy's wild solo sounds like Neil having one of his epileptic fits - in a good way. It just pointed out why Nels Cline would end up being a perfect fit for this band. I'd still love an Impossible Germany lesson! Thanks again.
Thanks David!
They should call Impossible Germany “impossibly guitar solo”!
Every time I listen to it to think about transcribing it I realize how long, jazzy, and layered it is! Is there a shorter/simpler Nels solo that’d be a good second choice?
Eric Haugen Either way?
@@EricHaugenGuitar
I was thinking more of the interlocking guitar parts than Nels' solo itself. Kind of like your Television lessons (which is appropriate, since this song is very reminiscent of Television).
@@samberkowitz2585 oooh that is a good one - jazzy, weird, and concise!
@@davidewing55 aha! Yeah - that'd be much less impossible!
Sick amazing song !!! Wilco 😃
Thanks man!

This is so freakin cool.been listening to this song everyday ,multiple times.lol.he loves his minor 9s
Great job, gorgeous mustang to boot!
Thanks Jacob!
That’s my trusty 1966 Mustang - I’ve had it since high school in the 90s!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Awesome! Hold onto that one for sure!
That is a sweet sounding guitar you have there Mr. Haugen .
Thanks Joe!
Basically, give me some overdrive, a ribbon mic, and plenty of reverb and I'll be a happy guy!
That was bloody fantastic!....nice one mate
Thanks Dave!
Ya gotta love Tweedy’s freakout on this one 🤠
Thanks man! Just bought the tab and backing track
Thanks for your support Ryan!
Great solo and lesson, thanks! Jeff plays this with a capo on the 5th fret and tuned to drop-D (G)
I know he does live but i swear the album version is sans capo!
That's so clean, great job.
Thanks man!
So good man. Great chops! Great tone! Great instruction! Thank you!
It's my pleasure Jason!
I love Tweedy's crazy playing on this one - so unhinged!
Eric Haugen my all time favorite band. Especially when Nels came along.
Yay, more Wilco!
Yeah!
There’s so much Wilco/Tweedy goodness to explore!
@@EricHaugenGuitar I'll be waitin' around for Impossible Germany.
Always quality
Big cheers Eric 🤙🏼🎸
Thanks Slim!
Man, I love the opening melody of this solo - top ten riffs fo sho 🤘🏻
Loving the lush new venue.
Thanks Damon!
I thought it'd be fun to shoot some vids in the sunporch - it's the room right behind the room I usually film in.
Sick thank you sm
Great player, Great teacher! Well done again.
Thanks Sjaak!
I always loved this track - it's a great one to work on!
Eric Haugen I didn’t know this song before I heard you play it. I always enjoy the way you approach it. So inspiring and creative. I am thinking about moving to your place! Haha!! Just kidding. Lol.
@@SjaakShirly6559 Pittsboro NC is a lovely town! Farmers, Artists, & Hippies all living together in a non-pretentious laid back way :-)

Brilliant. Many thanks! Wilco FTW
Yeah! Wilco is one of my all time faves!
Great video!
Thanks Mike!
Amazing lesson
Thanks man!
Man. . . You can come up with the best tones! 😋😜
Thanks John!
There's a good bit of audio processing going on there, but simply put - some overdrive, a ribbon mic, and reverb will go a looooong way!
Very nice and spontaneous sounding.
Thanks gab!
Spontaneous is a great way to put it! Usually, I have my lessons tabbed out note for note before I start filming. But this one, I just hit record and played through it a few times - you can see the gears turning as I play it!
@@EricHaugenGuitar The nuances of the "unpolished" piece make it sound more artistic.
P.S.
That "fuzzy" part of the original song reminds me of the beginning of the solo from "Of wolf and man". Maybe he is doing a similar run.
@@gab_ale Ha! I remember that one! I love some old Metallica - especially the original lineup stuff 🤘🏻
Never heard this song before but that was immense.
On the record, you gotta wait for it - there's a pretty piano/vocal intro that lasts like 2 minutes.
You've done it again Mr Haugen
Thanks Lorcan!
This one was a true labor of love to work on - such a great track!
Skronk-tastic dirt. So much to unpack. Thanks man.
Yeah!
I think the main thing to see is how Tweedy sees the scale areas all over the fretboard in a horizontal way - that's a good thing to work on!
Well done! You sound great!
Thanks man!
(I love the Beano record btw)
@@EricHaugenGuitar Of course, Eric C. rippin' Mississipi tunes... the truth
Brilliant! One of my favorites.
Yeah! That whole record is such a great follow up to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I love “I’m a wheel”
Eric Haugen It’s a genius record. It’s the one that really got me heavy into Wilco.
@@HarshTonesInc Have you heard the Tweedy record? So great - lofi and funky
@@EricHaugenGuitar Yes! The Tweedy record is excellent. I really love the more "experimental" lo-fi noisy stuff on that record.
@@HarshTonesInc Yeah! I love the scrappiness! One of my beefs with good musicians (like the current Wilco lineup) is that they sound like pros - I always try to make anything fancy I do sound like a "happy accident." It helps that I'm naturally a little bit clumsy on the fretboard and play on either side of the beat :-)
You are the best!!!!!!
Thanks Daniele!!! 🍻
Great!!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks Fernando!
@@EricHaugenGuitar A pleasure! I didn’t know your channel. Amazing job with awesome song selection. I am now a suscriber. Keep it rocking! 😉
Great lesson!
Can you teach how to play via chicago?
Oooh good idea! I love that whole record!
What are your thoughts on nels Cline. You should do Wilco’s bull black nova solo lesson
Im a big nels fan. My favorite record of his is "Chest". I like his new stuff with Julian Lage too.
Ooh good idea! I’ve got a lot of respect for Nels, even though sometimes he’s a little too fast/fancy for me 🤠
But that’s really just because I can’t play like that!
Can we get the backing track?
Yeah! If you go to the website, you can grab it for free 👍
super cool! you could teach us the "dawned on me" solo too ;)
Oooh yeah that’s a wild one!
Curious, have you taken a look at any of the songs off those first two Big Star records? Absolute masterpieces. "You Get What You Deserve", so good.

Such great tone on this one. The grit is from the Deco?
Yeah!
The Deco, plus some tape echo added in post.
That was Jeff ? Real cool ! Kind of sounds like something Neil Young would play. Shouldn’t be afraid solo does too although I’m not sure who plays that one. AM is a great guitar album. Thanks Eric king of taste !!
Lol I wrote that before watching the whole video and you said it was Neil like right at the beginning
Yeah I forget who does the lead work on AM - great record too! Kinda more of a continuation of Uncle Tupelo - to me, Wilco didn't become Wilco until Jay Bennett came on the scene 😎
He’s the man !
@@joeygosney5251 I identify with him a lot! Ever the weirdo sideman, not the main focus, but such an important part of the creativity!
Well he did have Nels Cline or is that just live? I love this solo too though regardless it’s obviously very expressive reminds me of Hendrix or Neil Young. Definitely a singer songwriters kind of solo. It’s very expressive whereas too many guitar solos are simply impressive. This solo tells you exactly what the man in the song is feeling and it’s painful. The album version is one of my favorite Wilco moments. They nailed it. This was their peak in my book. Will always miss Jay though he was just a great musician. Piano or guitar.
What amp you running? Loving the tone!
Thanks Nick!
Here's a rig rundown - I put them in the descriptions of all my vids for curious tone seekers like yourself :-)

The band had discovered Bill Fay not too long before this album came out, and if you go through Bill Fay's guitar work, you'll see where much of Wilco's inspiration came from during this time. If I had to pick one particular song out of Bill Fay, I would say "I Hear You Calling" would be an interesting one to compare to Wilco, particularly their Sky Blue Sky period.
czcams.com/video/WzelXU6DQyA/video.html
"I Hear You Calling" reminds me a little of "At Least That's What You Said" too.
This NYTimes article talks about Bill Fay's inspiration on Wilco.
www.nytimes.com/2020/01/15/arts/music/bill-fay-countless-branches.html
Ooooh that's interesting! I've listened to "Time of the Last Persecution" a lot, but it's been a while - gonna put it back in rotation.
Nice….
Looks like Tweedy uses a capo on second fret when playing this song live. Probably gives him access to some 2nd fret open strings when he’s in the zone.
Yeah I watched a couple of live clips when I was working on it. Looks like Nels plays it open, and Tweedy is capoed. But I swear the album version is no capo - I listen really close at 60% speed, going in 3 second chunks. That’s my method 🤓
TASTY!
Thanks Roger!
can you please cover the solo of impossible germany?

Eric Haugen love the Mustang, what wood is that?
I *think* it's alder, might be poplar though.
Eric Haugen Thanks. It’s absolutely beautiful.
Hey dude, great video what pedals? I read bio but wasn't sure. 👍
I almost always use my Strymon deco for overdrive, then add other stuff in post. In this case, I used waves j37 tape machine for delay, and Valhalla effects vintage verb - they’re plugins, not pedals though 🤠
