      I do agree with the edits. They aren't fully fleshed out yet, a little too long, timing isn't as on point as with more seasoned creators and there are slightly too many. They can liven up these buzzfeed-type of videos and require some practice, I suppose. I'd probably dial them down a bit and focus the editing work on fewer well placed ones :) Still a good video!

    Thanks for this video! As someone fairly tech savvy & having a very basic understanding of battery and charging technology. I appreciate you telling us that Powertools has a battery charge limiter. Doing small charges is better for your battery, than doing full 0 - 100% charges at once. The best thing to do is to limit your battery between 40-50% and keep it at that charge, while doing one or two full battery cycles every month or so, to recalibrate the battery. Your battery will get confused if you never do a full charge, it will display wrong percentages, and your battery health percentage will not be correct, it might even negatively impact your max charging capability. Doing full battery charge cycles too often, will increase battery degradation, so the best solution is to limit it to 40-50% when you can have it pluged in all the time, and charge it up when you need it on the go, and make sure to at least do a one full battery charging cycle every month or so.

    Great guide, thank you for that. Some of these steps I had already applied, while others were completely unknown to me, and it's a relief to learn about them so soon after getting my own Deck. The second don't, however, not to use screen protection, I didn't think the reasoning you gave not to use it was enough. I mean, it's like insurance, right? You want to have and never need, instead of needing it and never having. English is not my first language so I didn't get the other reasoning you used about making something else worthless? Useless? I didn't quite catch that, but I wish to know more, if you wouldn't mind. Anyways, appreciate the video, and I hope to see more useful stuff like that in your channel.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hello, thanks a lot for the kind words! I am glad you found something worth your time but I am even more happy you were already taking good care of your Deck!
      To your question, thou -
      By biggest problem with screen protector for the deck is that it degrades the quality of the display and especially the touch screen while not really protecting the screen from anything but scratches, and to leave any marks on this device's display you need to be misusing it or storing it improperly. In order ro protect the display from fall damage or any real damage you need to drop at least 100$ on a protector, the cheap ones just won't cut it (thats been tested with phones, let alone something as heavy as the deck). At the same time having a peotector incentivises you to be more careless with it thinking it will "save" the day if something happens, but it won't. So it's more like a "fake insurance" than a real one.
      I went on a rant there but I hope that makes my take and opinion clearer.
      Thanks a lot for taking the time to write a comment and, I do appreciate it a lot 🫡

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 5 měsíci +4

      Absolutely for docked! Since you will be using it as a computer essentially, you don't want your battery sitting at 100%. If you mainly use it docked I even suggest capping it to 50%! That's the best charge for a battery to sit on (thats why electronics arrive at about 50% charge when brand new, they store them this way to preserve battery health)

    Hey mate, what difference does it make when limiting the charge to a max of 80%, i mean, whats the deal between 80% and 100%? thanks. also i dont think ill like it too much to play constantly with the deck plugged to the wall, the chord is not that long and i dont know, it just becomes more like a desktop.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 6 měsíci +6

      Hi! I think you wouldn't be able to lay on your couch with a desktop 😁 Jokes aside it's up to you if you want to be overprotective of your battery or not! To answer tour question: A battery has a certain number of charge cycles and with every cycle it total capacity and life degrade. A charge from 0%-100% would take a full cycle out of it. On the flip side charging from 20%-80% takes about 0.15 of a cycle. So in the long run you are getting more total % of juice while degrading your battery much, much slower.
      Hope that helps!

      @@ZhakOfAllTrades I believe modern batteries never actually charge to 100 per cent capacity, your device says 100 per cent but I think that manufacturers limit how much the battery is actually allowed to charge to increase the number of cycles. So 100 per cent on your device is more like 80 per cent for the battery. I could be wrong though, so i welcome anyone's opinion that actually knows what they are talking about, because I have never tested this, I've just heard it a few times.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 6 měsíci +1

      And limiting the charge to the usable 80-85% still helps. Remember its all about the charge cycles!

      I agree, but at the same time you will find that you wont be moving too much, and with a long enough cable you won't even notice it. Not to mention that even if you plan to play unplugged you will still play plugged-in most of the time as with AA titles the battery drains in 2 hours and needs about 3-4h to charge fully.
      If you really want to use it on the go, I suggest a good powerbank that can give it at least a full charge. And maybe consider buying or 3D printing a Deck Mate

    As someone who worked with batteries and got certified in battery tech. We were told that you need to cycle the battery, eg letting it use its charge and then recharging. This will make the battery last longer. You should also never charge to 100% an ideal range is 80% You should also never leave a battery charging all the time, this puts a lot of ware on the battery, and you should use a slow charge. This will help the battery last longer, and you shouldn’t charge too much because it will cause the battery to stay in a constant state of high heat which will lower the battery life.
    I am just telling you what I was taught when I went to get certified in battery tech.

      Hi, cool info but you are referring to nickel cadmium battery types or possibly NiMH batteries (especially that you mention they need to be drained fully before charge) The SteamDeck has lithium-ion polymer battery which has a lot different properties and actually should not be discharged fully for best performance.

      So, I tried to download genshin impact and I think I messed up on one of the stages and I was going to start again from the beginning so I deleted what I had downloaded already by deleting the genshin impact file and I think I must have dragged the download file onto the trash and I deleted everything in the trash. So now I when I try to download things from the Internet, there is no folder for it to be downloaded into.

      Hello! Welcome to the channel. This sounds like either an error with Linux or a bad charger/cable. Try going in battery storage mode and back. If you do not know how to do it, I explain it in my 6 Steam Deck hacks video!

  • @gravydoors
    @gravydoors Před 6 měsíci +5

    Instead of limiting to 80% battery charging, I limit mine down to 60% when I play while it’s plugged in. Most laptop brands have this option too if it’s always plugged in. the limit to 80% charged is mainly for smart phones.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 6 měsíci +4

      That also works, although the cycle difference in this range is marginal. You also run the risk of having your Deck at half charge in case you have to use it on the go. But in general is also a viable option, depending on your needs.
      And most laptops limit to 80-85%, very few have adjustable or lower option. Smartphones got that quite recently last 2-3 gens.

  • @QuestionTheTruth

    I have always had the comprehension that the battery should be between 10-90% for maximum life expectancy, and much like cars, the percentage isn't what the battery is at.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 3 měsíci

      Then you use a protector. My opinion is based on adults using it, obviously with kids most of those wont apply. I would even add a protective case if I were to give one to a child.

    Is all this battery management really necessary? Hasn't technology come along far enough where internal battery chips are already doing this? 🤔

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I wouldn't say necessary, but it will definitely prologue the life of your battery. Although the technology is improved, new phones and laptop do come with software charge limiters you can turn on. I don't think that would be the case if there was less than substantial benefit to having them.

    • @ZhakOfAllTrades
      @ZhakOfAllTrades  Před 6 měsíci +1

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade Před 6 měsíci +1

      I find screen protectors completely redundant for the Steam Deck. You don't put the device in your pocket like a phone, the analogue sticks are sticking out way beyond the level of the screen, causing it not to scratch even if it is upside down, and unlike the Switch, you don't dock the Steam Deck in a similar fashion where it becomes a flat device which needs to be slid into a plastic housing. I have had mine since March 2022. Not a single scratch on the device. And it is so grip-friendly that I find it near impossible to drop.
