i love Patton but man
It's been a long time since this video was made, but at this point I think I'll make a comment on why these specific moments were added- though I haven't watched TS in a while, so bear with me.
This is also all subjective and was more "come get ya'lls juice" to people who like unsympathetic Patton than "See this proves he's unsympathetic". It's all opinions.
Most of these were added because Patton was making jokes at the wrong time, laughing at mean jokes that Virgil made, or being. Kind of. Just. Not great (think "Tell us you love us. Now." Sounding a bit... just gross ngl.)
Something I saw people get upset that I added was him telling Logan to stop.
If Logan was human, he'd be autistic- that's just the facts. He doesn't understand emotions the way Patton does, but that doesn't mean he doesn't feel emotions at all. The interaction put me off because no one explained correctly to Logan, and instead lashed out. Patton also at the time was trying to keep them in a state of nostalgia and got upset at Logan for not wanting them to stay there, so. That's another thing.
It's not a video essay, it's just something I made for fun. If I wanted to make a video essay, I'd make one.

This is a really interesting way of pointing out that one of the most beloved characters in the series has more flaws than what we may see on the surface. Logan and Roman both have seemingly obvious flaws, like Logan's tendency to feel more important than the others, and Roman's tendency towards overconfident posturing, so it's very obvious that they are flawed characters. Deceit and Remus have been introduced as antagonists, and therefore, their character flaws are usually there for the purpose of opposing what, according to Thomas, is right, like Deceit's dishonesty and Remus', Remus-ness. Virgil is a special case where his introduction as an antagonist, and then redemption seem to give him a free pass for his character flaws (can't think of anything off the top of my head, so I'll leave that up to you :) ). But Patton, on the surface doesn't really seem to have any negative character traits, he's just a happy-go-lucky guy, who sometimes represses his more negative emotions, and doesn't really seem to have any negative character flaws. But watching this video, it does make it easier to see that Patton may have some moments where he can be unemphatic, despite his role as personifying Thomas' emotional center. Idk if I'm reading too much into this, but I feel like this may be an interesting topic to explore, if Thomas and the gang decide to go this route
Also, I don't know if Thomas and the gang planned on doing this, but I think they may have a set up for a future episode on love languages, like while Logan tends to deny the fact that he does have emotions, you can see that he does care for the other sides, and that his love language is most likely through acts of service, as demonstrated by when he got Patton that cat hoodie when trying to make amends at the end of the Moving On part 2. This might lead to Logan being more comfortable with the idea that he does have emotions and give him a way of being able to express them on his terms, and also while allowing the other sides to understand and support Logan in this way.
Anyways, I think this is a really interesting way to look at Patton, and I'm definitely curious to see what you're gonna do for Virgil.

I do think Thomas and the gang are going to go down the route of exploring Patton's flaws. They've said on the members streams that things will get progressively more serious and strained among the sides, and also Thomas even said he was glad that people noticed Patton's behaviour recently as well as his strained relationship with Virgil at present. All the characters have flaws as well as positives, it's why they're so interesting to watch

I think it's mainly because the heart and the mind never agree. Plus let's be honest patton has been treated like shit too. Everyone always pushed him to the side because they think hes childish but he does have good input into the arguements.
I love unsympathetic Patton and cute, harmless Patton; the latter is just generally fun, but the former is SUCH a good villain. Like, if everything he's doing is manipulation, then that is just masterful and creepy and I enjoy that stuff (in characters).

in the moment when Patton told Logan to stop: he did it because he was sad. Logan didn't understand how hard it was for him to let that person go and saying "just because Patton can't let go of one person" is kinda shitty esspecially when they had a deep connection (i know personally that it's very hard to let go and it will hurt for a while)
I think in that case it was Logan being unempathetic/sympathetic.

The clip where he says to Roman “princey tell us you love us, now.” Honestly scares me. It sounds like a parent holding back their anger in public or like he’s seriously threatening Roman. I also hate how he holds the “you used the wrong word” mistake over Logan’s head constantly, I’ve been in Logan’s shoes in a situation like that and it’s not fun at all.
That's what I thought about that part. "Oh no, he's using his subdued-furious-dad voice" That's my thought process, and it's pretty worrying.

I feel like this really just demonstrates how far he's come- I don't think he means to be unsympathetic. He's been formed as a strict moral code, and moral codes are hard to change, but he does do his best. Also, half of this is just him trying to be fun-

@@carrotandpeas of course not, but he's literally morals. Having a strong moral code is a big part in sympathy. He was the very first of the light sides to truly accept Virgil as not something evil. Yes, he's not fond of Deceit and Remus. But you can dislike someone, and not absolutely despise them. He's shown some of the greatest improvement. Logan is the same, Roman is the same, Virgil has become cold, remus is the same, and deceit is the same. None of these clips are him having a lack of sympathy

It's directed at an audience that chooses to see Patton in an unsympathetic light, as in we don't sympathize with his character and look for the flaws because we like noticing and analyzing and theorizing and making head cannons about this view of the character. I understand you don't see his character that way, and that's completely fine, I respect your opinion, but I choose to see him in a different light, and I'd appreciate if you'd respect that.

yeah, he is a good person, i mean he's literally morality. i wouldn't call him abusive or unsympathetic either, he's just an awful jerk sometimes, like all of them are. most of how the sides are hurt comes from each other, and that's kinda sad.
I would probably say that he is a good person. He always has good intentions he just sometimes has an unhealthy way of fixing/expressing them. He has a lot of anxious energy and gets stressed easily (As you can see in SVS or DWIT), he always repressing his negative emotions even after the moving on arc. While I’d still probably say that he can be a bit rude sometimes (mostly unintentional), people tend to call him unsympathetic or manipulative because they put him in such a stereotype of being always nice and innocent. Whenever he acts otherwise people don’t really like that. You can tell he genuinely cares about all of them (well maybe not so much the dark sides but you get my point) he has an unhealthy way of going about things sometimes but he is learning and trying to improve.
I don’t see him as unsympathetic. I think he’s naive and emotional. He does represent a lot of Thomas’s emotions so yeah he gets caught up in them a lot. It is interesting to look at him as unsympathetic but I just don’t see it.

I love unsympathetic Patton as much as anyone, but I do feel like a good 1/4 of these are a reach. Like at 1:38. That scene is out of context. Logan had been pushing Patton that entire episode to go to his room, despite Patton's warnings against it. Furthermore, In that same scene, Logan says "... all this because Patton can't let go of _one_ person". Thomas and Patton needed time to grieve and Logan is upset because their productivity will go down. If anyone is being unsympathetic here, it's Logan. And that's just one instance. A lot of these aren't unsympathetic, they're just out of context or multi-faceted issues where both parties were wrong.

I think most of these are taken out of context. When he tells logan to stop it's because patton was hurt and sad from losing someone so close to him. Logan was the unsympathetic one in that part. Patton has a reason for most of these instances he knows thomas the most, hes not trying to manipulate Thomas hes trying to get thomas to see what thomas would feel best about (like the wedding, thomas would have felt like shit if he went to the comeback and not the wedding because that is who thomas is as a person) and let's be honest patton has flaws. You can't say deciet is any better because he is doing the same thing purposely while patton is doing it unknowingly. Other people who do this purposely is logan virgil roman and remus. They all do it because they are all in control of thomas decision making. We all know patton has flaws, without these flaws he would be a 2 dimensional character with no story arc that would have ended the series long ago, however we still love patton flaws and all. In this video it seems as if you're antagonizing patton like most people do to deciet or virgil or remus. None of them are perfect but when they come together they get to the best outcome. Patton has the most control in decisions because thomas gave him it and the rest of the light sides see that. It's the dark sides that are trying to take his power away by making him look worse than he is. The closest thing I can think of comparing this to is to a company. No matter how nice a boss is there are always going to be people trying to take them down, so the boss needs to have some things up his sleeves to make sure he stays where he's at. Patton was forced into the boss role by thomas so he has to try his hardest to prove he is worthy of it.
Now I'm not saying I agree with patton on everything, if it was me I would have gone to the comeback but let's be honest Thomas agrees with patton 100% so that is why pattons always going to win. Thomas will always listen to his heart more than anything else.
And honestly patton is the most sympathetic of all the sides. Doesn't mean he always is but no one is always sympathetic. But he is the one to go to for sympathy. Like when virgil said he didn't like to be babied. Patton said okay and he tries his hardest to make virgil feel better. The other sides would not have done that.

No Thomas listens all of them equally because if he let Patton decide all the time he would be a mess because that would be unhealthy. While thomas' sides are maturing patton and Roman are probably feeling left behind. They all are important to thomas it's just that at specific times he will listen to some more than the others.
Yeah, but for gosh’s sake, give him some credit. He’s got a hard as heck job. He has to balance all of the emotions and morality, deal with every feeling Thomas goes through, balance what society says with his personal morals and deal with his upbringing and people not taking him seriously.

I think that the reason Patton is sometimes unsympathetic like this is because 1. He’s kind of like a child he doesn’t know better and that he can sometimes hurt peoples feelings and 2. Patton is very used to keeping up a facade of being alright when he is hurting on the inside. A lot of times people say mean/rude things because they are hurting. But no one is all sunshine and rainbows so I do agree that Patton is not an all good side of Thomas and neither are the other sides

after reading through the comments and watching the video a few times, i have to say that i freaking hated every part of it. i have very strong feelings about all these characters, and, as patton has said in the moving on videos and learned to embrace (especially in the learning new things abt ourselves vid) , he represents not only thomas’ happy feelings, but all of them. he’s known as morality, but he’s also thomas’ heart. feelings are hard, maybe impossible, to explain, which is why i believe he has that relationship with logan, where they “attack” each other in an indirect way. i don’t think he’s doing it conciously, and he truly tries his best to be the happy dad he’s known to be.

It's literally supposed to portray him as unsympathetic, that's the point of the vid, it's for people who see and agree with the unsympathetic view of the character, if you don't like it fine but you can't spread hate just because you don't agree with this view on the character. You have a right to your opinion of course, it on really disagree with you. The video itself is controversial, but not a bad video in itself if one can see the intended audience for such a video.

Can we talk about how every side except for roman and Janus have really bad listening skills? Like every problem would have been solved much faster if they had listened to how each other was feeling.
Especially Patton. Like he over looks Logan’s input even though he knows how valuable it is just so he can continue following his moral compass. And when princey is talking about his feelings Patton cuts him off and continues talking about how Thomas is. Completely ignoring that fact that Thomas’s emotions come from every side and how they’re feeling. And he doesn’t even try to understand where Janus is coming from when he first appeared. Patton didn’t get it until Janus literally had to fight him video game style.
But it’s not just Patton. Logan is guilty of this too. In the nostalgia video after Logan is tired of being ignored he shouts at Patton. And though he was technically right, Patton was keeping Thomas from moving on. Logan shouted when Patton was in a very bad mental state which caused Patton to ask him to leave. He also totally insulted Roman in the ‘Why do I get up in the morning’ video when he said that Roman only deserves 7mins of time to do his job. And during the puppet video he threw a paper at Roman right after saying that Roman’s dreams and hopes weren’t real and that they should stop pursuing them. Is that exactly what he said? No but Logan did say ‘you need to get a real job’. And I agree you can’t live off of just hopes and dreams but Logan basically crushed them without batting an eye.
And don’t think I forgot Virgil. Yes I know that many fangirls/boys/pals will come after me for this. But during the puppet video Virgil tries to to help Logan embrace his feelings but as he does so Logan looks visibly confused. Like he genuinely doesn’t know what Virgil’s talking about. And I know some people will think it’s cause Virgil said ‘you’re lost’ and Logan didn’t get it but we’ve established that Logan can understand metaphors. Also Virgil only focused on Logan’s problems for like 5 seconds before saying ‘I was lost once too but thanks to all of you life suck less now’ and then they just leave it like that. Like they were going to help Logan with his problems but just moved on. Also he refused to listen to anything Janus says just because he doesn’t like him. Roman even says ‘are you so close minded to believe that everything that comes out of someone you don’t like is wrong’. And even after that he still shows his discontent with Janus being there.
The reason I didn’t include Janus and Roman is because they do listen and are the most not listened to. And unlike the others Janus doesn’t purposely leave anyone out. And I know some people might say that he didn’t invite Logan to the courtroom scene but dark side can summon light sides outside of the mind palace. Where it is confirmed by Patton as he says ‘we’re in the mind palace so I can summon anything’ that sides can’t summon some things outside of the mind palace. And though Janus is shown to not have the best relationship with Virgil he never actively left him out or ignored his input. He even invited Virgil to be a witness in the Svs video knowing that Virgil was going to do everything to try and prove Janus wrong.
And Roman is excused from his past hate towards Virgil because he has done his best to reverse his actions. The episodes after accepting anxiety you could see Roman trying his best to not call Virgil names and to ask for Virgil’s opinion. Also even though Roman desperately wanted Thomas to hit go to the callback he had Thomas go to the wedding. And I if you look deeper into that you realize that was a big thing for Roman to do. I mean he’s Thomas’s creativity. His hopes and his dreams going to the callback would be Roman’s biggest moment and could lead to fame and success. Proving to Logan and the others that his job is real and that it deserves more than 7mins. Also after every time a sides asked Roman if he’s okay he always responds with ‘I dont know’ or something like that. He never confirms that he’s doing fine yet the others move past it.
Now am I saying that Logan Patton and Virgil do this on purpose? No of course not. But I am saying that in a lot of situations they are being toxic and not even noticing. And I’m really hoping that the sides that have been ignored have justice.
Like Roman joins the dark sides or something and the others finally realized that they’ve been ignoring him and not Roman and Janus are like a tag team and for a couple episodes (or more who knows) its just Janus and Roman pointing out all the time they’ve been ignored or straight up insulted and like all the light sides and Thomas have to figure out what to do.
And either Roman returns to the light sides or Roman’s stays and becomes like besties with Janus and remus and whoever the orange side is.
I didn’t include remus in this because he’s barely been in series at all so there’s not much to work off of. But I seriously wonder what Thomas is gonna do with his character. Because so far all the dark sides have become light sides after Thomas realizes how important they are to him being a good person and watching out for his mental health. But since some people don’t even have intrusive thoughts at all I don’t know how that would work unless remus represents more than just one thing like how patton isn’t just morality he also represents most of Thomas’s feelings and decision making.
Also no hate to the characters you can still like them. I’m just pointed out there flaws and as I said they probably didn’t do this on purpose. Also remember every side doesn’t what they think is best for Thomas even if it’s wrong. That have no point not to help him. If anything happens to Thomas it happens to them.

Ok I didn’t even realize until I read your comment that yeah, Janus probably has the best listening skills out of all of them. He has to be able to listen to the others because he often uses their own words against them. Whenever he shows up, he tries to convince at least one other side to share his opinion or uses tactics that mimic the tactics of another side (lying to Joan is the “right thing to do,” going to the callback is the “logical choice”). He’s an outsider, so simply “being himself” isn’t an option if he wants to enter the conversation. This ability to actually listen to others and realize when another side is upset makes him probably a better problem-solver than the rest, actually.

Patton is trying. In the latest vid he was trying really hard to be less pushy and actually had a breakdown because he was so conflicted.
some of these are just him being childish and unreasonable and others are him being a strict parent like when your child’s in trouble and they refuse to apologize; and other times he’s just teasing (mostly logan) like how parents tease they’re kids
Videos like this are an interesting perspective but you could literally do this with any of the characters. It’s odd to me that some people see this as proof of Patton being “evil” or in any way worse than the other sides. Most of this is just Patton making an honest mistake, or making jokes that don’t go beyond anything the other sides have ribbed each other or Patton for. It’s also strange to me that none of the more obvious examples of Patton being actually kind of rude to Virgil (or just acting against his wishes) made it in, which I feel like has something to do with the ending meme. I feel like there’s a lot of examples of Patton being manipulative or controlling that weren’t included and were replaced by things like admitting mistakes, having strong feelings about something, being defensive, or making jokes. So this video was interesting as a way to see another perspective, but people have to understand it’s important to look at other perspectives too.

I’d say myself that I’m a fan of plot twist villains, evil peoples that seem sweet, and manipulative villains who know just how to get you to do what they want. And that’s why I’m here, because I want to look at a headcanon and character interpretation that I enjoy.
I’m not saying that I think Patton is going to be the villain of Sanders sides, nor that I want that to happen. But in my opinion, and with the limited characters in SS, I think he is a great villain for fanfics, fanart, and fan comics.
If you like sympathetic Patton, have at it. Watch videos with his good parts in it, enjoy his comedy. He’s a good character. I won’t try to argue with you over whether it’s canon that he’s manipulative or not. That’s up to your own views.

I love, love, LOVE Patton, but I can't deny that he... can kinda veer into toxic positivity, and a bit of controllingness and overstrictness, at times... but he's trying his best, yknow? Being someone's morality is a HUGE RESPONSIBILITY and it must be real hard and scary to navigate... I mean he's even hiding his stress and negative feelings for it... he's not evil, he's not unsympathetic. He's just... real flawed, like every one of them.
I wouldn't call the logo one unsympathetic. I think it's more symbolism about how logic and emotion work best together. Too much logic with an absence of emotion can make you come off as mean, but too much emotion with an absence of logic makes you easy to manipulate

I think a lot of you are overanalyzing Patton's character. Yes, he is manipulative and controlling over Thomas, but he is not an individual human being. He is Thomas' morality and he is the representation of faulty morals. All of you blaming Patton should realize that we too, have had faulty moral thinking. None of us are perfect. Most of us too were brought up with the belief that being selfish is wrong and a lot of us tend to pressure ourselves into uncomfortable situations. That's only what's happening to Thomas too. Patton is only the byproduct of the beliefs Thomas' parents and the society moulded into him. Just like Janus, Remus and Virgil, Patton was also "made this way". He cannot be perfect but he also can't be "fixed" or redeemed easily. He still tried his best to change in the Intrusive Thoughts episode and the SvS episode, Patton admitted to being wrong and agreed to work with Thomas and listen to Janus more.

I agree, he's my least favorite character, personally. Like if someone likes him that's cool but I just really don't. The way I see it, he's insensitive to the others and tends to be put to a lower standard since he has Patton on his side.(no pun intended) Plus he's overrated, and that just kinda ruined his character for me personally..
I love unsym Patton as much as the next guy, but i don't think a lot of these clips are him being unsympathetic. I think quite a few are just patton not being super cheery and happy. Granted, a few are definitely.. not exactly the nicest.
