kyle shanahan supposedly really liked darnold coming out of the draft in 2018 but the 49ers traded for garoppolo midway thru 2017 and gave him a huge extension after the season after he went 5-0 to end the season and created such an excited within the 49ers franchise and fandom at the end of the 2017 ... so darnold wasn't a realistic option
but lets say if the 49ers didn't trade for jimmy g and the 49ers continued to be bad and got a top 2 or 3 pick in the 2018 draft ... i'm guessing they would've drafted darnold if he were available which he would've been since he went #3 to the jets that year
also when the months right after the 2020 season ended the 49ers were reportedly interested in trading for darnold that offseason when the jets were shopping him but shortly after that the 49ers traded 3 1st and a 3rd to move up to #3 to draft lance in april of 2021
so again shanahan has had an eye on darnold for the last 5+ years now probably and finally has him ... and if there were any place to succeed for darnold who was my QB #1 in that 2018 draft ... it's the 49ers who are loaded with weapons on offense and it'll be far the best offensive roster that darnold has played with since his redshirt freshman season at USC in 2016 when after that rose bowl performance vs penn st where he threw for 450+ yards and 5 TD
darnold had so much hype in early 2017 that he was seen as a legit #1 pick candidate the moment he was drafte eligible ... that's how hot his stock was as he was looked similarily to luck and lawrence over the last 10+ years when luck had he entered the 2011 draft instead of 2012 he gets picked #1 ahead of newton that year no doubt ... and lawrence had he been allowed to enter the 2019 or 2020 drafts after his freshman year in college also would've gone #1 in both years
similar with darnold if were allowed to have entered that year's draft in 2017 ... the browns who picked #1 likely would've drafted darnold over garrett who was as prime of a non QB prospect to ever go #1 in recent history
course knowing what we know now mahomes should've been the shoe in to go #1 that year
but darnold returned to college in 2018 and had an okay but not great season mainly due to so many of his offensive teammates get draft smith-schuster at WR, jones at RB, and 2 or 3 starting OL from the 2017 USC team ... not to mention what we know now was a terrible coaching staff too
now doesn't mean darnold is the long term QB for the 49ers but i personally wouldn't be shocked if darnold got in some game action in 2023 considering 49ers QB since 2018 for the most part can't stay healthy be it due to scheme, bad luck, or in the case of somebody like jimmy g ... he just couldn't hold up physically for a full NFL season other than in 2019 ... i'd expect darnold to see some time on the field in 2023 with the 49ers
honestly if 2 or 3 years from now would it shock me if darnold turned his career and he is the 49ers starting QB going forward from next season and into the future ... no ... but at this moment i'm still betting on lance to be the 49ers long term starting QB option but again it wouldn't shock me to see darnold take reigns in some crazy scenario in 2023
