- AI for language learning is blowing up, but it comes with a price. How will AI like ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard shape the language community, and what will it take away from us as the technology helps us learn languages faster. This is an open conversation with the language community on how "helpful ai" might ruin a lot of the parts we love about learning languages, and what we can do to avoid that.

About me
Hola a todos đđœ Iâm Jerry, I learned Spanish from 0 to fluent, have taken the Spanish C2 mastery exam, and I make videos to help you learn Spanish and connect to the people and cultures that surround this beautiful language. Whether you're just starting out or want to keep improving, I've got something for you, so come aboard and join this Spanish adventure! đ„
What's 1 way we can make AI work for the language community rather than against it?
For an example of AI (Bard) for language learning: czcams.com/video/cJjsgI9sVYc/video.htmlsi=H-5bZ1-j7bu3mPC6
This video at times sounds like a brainstorming session for a new scifi series or movie, and it's spot on. Jerry makes some very excellent points.
Haha thanks đđœ trying to sneak educational topics into a fun format to get more people to care and join the language community
Great video!
Very thought-provoking and interesting. I love the content youâre producing!
Really glad you enjoyed it đđœ
my language teacher helps me to socialize with others students in class room, create events, travels, dynamics in group, games coop . He so passionate for culture and language learn wich make difference for inspire others and make the students more engaged
sry my poor english, hugs from Brazil
Jerry, I have watched a few of your videos, and I find them awesome. I am a language tutor and learner (I speak French, English, and Turkish fluently, and I am acquainted with Dutch, German, and Spanish). I am currently building an e-learning platform for kids, where they can practice French, English, and Spanish. I use ChatGPT every day for various purposes.
I think your videos are great because they're very useful, well-scripted, and well-edited. I have a request: would you be kind enough to reveal how your videos are made from a technical standpoint? What tools do you use? Do you edit them yourself, and how do you source the illustrative bits of video? Or do you already have a video explaining your process? If you don't, you could consider making one-I'm sure many CZcamsrs would find it interesting. Don't forget to include any affiliate links!
Excellently written and produced đ
I'm glad you liked this one. I wrote this with a candle at night trying to pretend I was a writer đ
Thanks!
So so kind of you! Thank you for the encouragement đ
One of the areas that most interests me as far as using AI to learn languages is getting it to assume characters. Some AI don't do this very well, but often you can ask it to adopt a background and culture (to get a more "authentic" L2/C2 experience) and it will do it at least somewhat well. Others will of course say they can't as language models that are designed to help
Not only teachers, but also many kind of jobs' commercial values will be devalue according to AI tech. Skills are still valuable, but not in commercial.
Very true-thereâs a lot coming in the next 5 years to keep in mind
Good video as always etc but just a question: how do you make/ where do you find your backgrounds? because I know for sure that the clip at 1:55 is from a Finnish short film ("Maalitaulu" or "Target" in English) that hasn't been even translated into English?? So how did it end up here? I mean nothing bad, I'm just curious.
Good eye đđœ I generally look for whatever compliments the story from my own archive of clips Iâve taken, B-Roll from services I subscribe to, and short clips from films that fit the tone
@@JerryRegistre Ohh I see! Thanks for explaining.
Cool, I love the idea of learning with AI
Iâm really bullish on it too-if we play our cards right, it could be a great thing for the language community
might is a pessimistic word.... AI is a tool, just like a computer, or a robot. AI is not a panacea. Foreign language teachers who know technology and AI will replace those who do not.
I think it depends on the way we build platforms-some are creating ways to share chats with teachers, for example, and others donât. Design choices shape our habits, so Iâm hoping we make choices that are more collaborative

I guess the logical conclusion is AI will eventually do away with the need to learn another language. Most people don't learn another language anyway. There's just not enough payback generally for the huge effort involved. So it will be of particular benefit to the non-language learning community at least. And there's nothing stopping you from learning a language if you still want/need to. Seems like a win-win situation for everybody.
I like that outlook. It is a big effort to learn languages, and the people who arenât interested now wonât be disadvantaged. But those who love it can still do it for the joy of it
Yeah, but do you REALLY want to talk to a computer to do everything in your life? Most people who are wired normally at the emotional level will still prefer to interact with the culture of their target language in a natural way--that means having a teacher and forming real relationships with people. AI can be an assistant, but, like the failed promises of DuoLingo, this will be yet more B.S. Google Translate did not do away with the need for translators, translators have simply developed much better software than google translate (I did some translation projects for Google translate, and let me tell you, it still has such a long way to go).
So as a language teacher, I'm not really worried about this kind of stuff. But perhaps these kind of technological advancements will weed out the students who really aren't serious for us, so we don't have to weed them out ourselves--most students really aren't that serious anyway, and perhaps for them, automatic face to face translations will be a better option instead of putting in the effort to get fluent or conversational. The people who really love language and culture will always find a way to directly interact with the culture. AI is just another way that big tech is trying to dehumanize us, but that will be automatically rejected by people who are curious enough about the world to really learn a second language. Because we are interested in people and places, not looking at stupid screens.
I'm not old, I'm only 31, but I feel too old to talk to an A.I. without feeling silly. I've always had a pretty eloquent internal monologue, so an A.I. seems unnecessary to me. But the new generation, people who are babies now and will grow up in this world... well, I can see Wall-e becoming a reality.
