0:34/0:42 I really, really love how Mafuyu and Ena sing this line respectively. I interpret this song as about a woman who entered a toxic relationship "of her own accord" (possibly despite being warned), but as the relationship continued, she's come to regret this; maybe she thought her partner was better than they end up being, maybe she believes she has to take responsibility for having entered this relationship (like a sunk-cost fallacy kind of deal), but regardless she feels trapped, and her resentment and bitterness has kept growing. She kind of hates her partner (calls them "scum of the earth", even), but she can't bring herself to end the relationship for one reason or another (which is pretty common for abuse victims, though she also seems to be toxic back to her partner with the whole "Obey me, shut up and follow me" thing).
In this cover, Ena and Mafuyu embody different ways of expressing this resentment and bitterness, which is also perfect for their characters, considering both have toxic relationships with their parents, though as abuse victims they're obviously not at all at fault for this. Ena takes on the role of passive-aggressive anger and frustration, even carrying an edge of defensiveness (1:03 "What? What? What on earth do you want?"), like she feels like she's being interrogated, or like she feels people are judging her for ending up in this situation. Mafuyu, meanwhile, carries a milder, more resigned tone to her, a kind of hollow disappointment and self-deprecation, like this is what she deserves for being foolish enough to end up here. Both of these are fitting and reflective of each girl's in-character response to the abuse inflicted on them. Ena is defiant, Mafuyu is submissive; Ena lashes out, Mafuyu internalizes.
But here, at 0:34 and 0:42, they kind of carry an undercurrent of each other's tone. Mafuyu sings her lines with a subtle undertone of contempt, like she's a little disgusted by who she's talking to, and Ena's bitterness seems much more self-focused in these lines than others, like she's sarcastically, bitterly berating herself. This is perfect, as contrary to outward appearances Mafuyu and Ena also carry parts of each other's responses in them. Ena may project an angry defiance outward, but she kind of hates herself at the same time, believing she's just not good enough for her father's approval. Mafuyu, meanwhile, might be largely submissive to her mother and emotionally numb, but there's a deeply hidden ball of FURIOUS anger inside her, enough to fucking create N25!KAITO.
I don't have a big conclusion, I just think they're neat.
for 1:03 , i was thinking it was a conversation between mafuyu and ena. where ena is knowingly jealous (at least in the beginning of the storyline) of mafuyu that's she rhetorically asking " 'what, what on earth do you want' since you're already talented and everyone has high expectations of you?" OR since ena is known to be more straightforward to mafuyu's feelings, she's asking it in a way for mafuyu to realize what she really wishes for and mafuyu responds in the following line "mind you, this is definitely not what i'm wishing for" because.. well her situation isn't really ideal. that's how i interpreted it the first time but i also enjoyed reading your analysis of the line distribution!

i feel like this song could be about their inner thoughts. sometimes i feel like ena and mafuyu have their alter-selves, made from their traumas and insecurities. and this song feels like these alters are speaking to them, trying to gain control for bodies and thought. while the first part of the song feel more positive and just as reflection and thinking, i see this drop at 0:24 as switch to their alters - with all toxic treats, all the problematics. and "shut up and obey me" countinues their trying to take control.
but i also like the theory about this song as a projection of ena's and mafuyu's parents. girls try to break the abusive circle in "positive", more brightparts of the song, but their brains still go back to producing what their parents told them ("scum of the earth" for ena's art, "shut up and obey me" for mafuyu)

i see a lot of people talking about how this song is about a girl who is abused and no longer wants to be in that relationship, and like probably? that's probably the intended meaning. i've always interpreted it as someone being in a relationship that Seems abusive to people around them, and the singer doesn't actually want to leave and is mad at the people around them for trying to get them help. what reason would an abuse survivor have to say "shut up and obey me?" it makes more sense if they're saying that to someone they don't want to do something (like call the police or smth)
