@@awkwardashleigh You'd be surprised how many writers actually get the ideas for their stories through actual life experiences. Maybe not to such extremes, but these life encounters do spark the ideas of these creative people. A famous science fiction writer Ray Bradbury (now deceased) gave a seminar for aspiring college literary students, which can be seen on CZcams. It's so very interesting and he gives examples of the life experiences which inspired
his novels/stories.

This story was Stephen King's metaphor for addiction, which King himself had serious issues with, years ago. The relationship is so friendly and wonderful, until things turn ugly on a dime, and you are completely helpless and dependent upon something that could also kill you.
And it's especially relevant nowadays. With how obsessive fans can be.
Yes hes very good at dad but it's also I remember reading that it was a response to the backlash against his attempt at a high fantasy novel for his kids, "Eye of the Dragon" I think it was called.

Oh, I thought it was partially for his reaction after he had his car accident...and getting annoyed when fans wanted him to only write horror when he wanted to branch out, hence Annie forcing Paul to write her favourite book again.

Watched it in the theatre when it came out. I've never been in an audience so rowdy as during the final fight. Everyone was screaming for him like it was a football game.

I saw this at the movie theater when it came out. At the end, when James Caan is finally able to defend himself against Kathy Bates, I swear the audience went NUTS!!! People were clapping and screaming. It was like everyone had released all the pent up tension they had held back while watching the movie. LOL!
Omg, same here! We were just WAITING for him to pop her one good time so he could GTHOT! And we laughed and cheered when he called her ‘you sick, twisted FUCK!’ while shoving those burning pages in her face. Such a satisfying scene!

I went and saw this when I was 13 years old and YES we all started clapping and going nuts. I think we had held our breath the entire time up until then 😂 one of my favorite movie theater experiences 😍
A stranger noticed my mom at a party, she ran up to my mom yelling "Kathy Bates! Kathy Bates!" and my mom wanted to punch her lights out. lol My mom hates being described like Kathy Bates. The combo of this film where she plays a psycho and Bates being an older heavy set woman not known for her beauty, it ticks my mom off. lol

I think Kathy bates is an attractive woman. Even now. She often plays the more homely roles, but I see the beauty in her.

@@EdSigma Followed the following year by "Silence of the Lambs" which won for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay (one of only three movies to win five of these major awards: It Happened Night (1934), Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The (1991).) IMHO, I would classify SOTL as more of a Crime Thriller than a Horror movie but I'll leave that up to people for whom that shit matters to worry about.

I love how Cathy bates could switch from super sweet to CRAZY in an instant without it seeming/looking cartoonish. She actually makes you feel concern the first time and then it slowly graduates to fear. Shes An amazing actress

This movie practically defined Kathy Bates' career as an actress, and it shows. She won an Oscar for this performance, and deservedly so. James Caan (who played Paul Sheldon) is also best known for playing Sonny from _The Godfather_ .
It was also directed by Rob Reiner who did _Princess Bride_ . He also directed another Stephen King story called _Stand By Me_ (which you should totally watch one of these days).
And Kathy Bates' Oscar win is even more impressive considering the Academy NEVER awards a horror film for any major category like acting!
For me, James Caan playing Johnathon E, in the film Rollerball is a more iconic role, than his one in The Godfather.
@ashleighburton Rob Reiner began in acting, probably best known for playing Mike "Meathead" Stivic on an old show called All In The Family. His father, Carl Reiner, used to perform onstage with none other than...Mel Brooks.

- _The Exorcist_ was the first horror film to be nominated for "Best Picture".
- _Silence of the Lambs_ (whether you consider it a horror or not) was the first to win "Best Picture". And the same goes for Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.
Rob is great, he did a number of films I love. Can't beat the 1980s and 1990s, more so if it has anything to do with King.

When Ashleigh announced she was going to review Misery, I knew she would go absolute bananas watching it. This was a treat. Thanks to her patreons who recommended it to her.
Kathy Bates won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in Misery, both well deserved. IMO she's amazing in everything she's been in. Even in smaller roles like her bit in Rat Race, she kills it every time.

See, that was probably the biggest reason I disliked this movie...because the book was soooo much more disturbing. This movie taught me to see the movie before reading the book, if possible.

True story. Misery was the first movie I took my now-wife to back in college. I refuse to call it our first date. Her friend bailed on going that night and I was a last-minute fill in. We went to Dances with Wolves the following week and I call that our first date. We're married 28 years this month.
I guess if you ever threaten to leave, Misery showed her what to do
There has been a lot of talk about a remake of this film the last few years and lots of people say the reason that hasn’t happened is because Kathy Bates and James Caan are irreplaceable.

If you're a Kathy Bates fan, you *need* to see "Dolores Claiborne".
Another that's based on a Stephen King book; you will recognize many of the great cast with Bates, David Strathairn , Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christopher Plummer, Judy Parfitt, Bob Gunton, and John C. Reilly . A keeper.
Most Millennials would recognize James Caan as being the dad in the movie Elf

In the novel she chops off his leg with an axe. Stephen King admitted that the rebreaking of the ankle was a better choice, much more visceral.
Cathy Bates crushes EVERY role she plays. In my opinion, she's the most underrated, under appreciated, incredible actress... possibly of all time! She really made the movie!
She did such a great job of turning the crazy on and off. There are characters (and everyday people) who just walk in crazy and there are the sociopaths who do crazy things but act like it's a normal day. But then you have ones like Kathy portrayed in "Misery" where the psycho switch goes on and off. Such a great job and very scary.
Kathy Bates and Toni Colette are two of the greatest actresses who rarely get the awards they deserve. I'm glad Kathy got an Oscar for a horror performance because it happens so rarely!
She was also good in the comedy movie "RAT RACE" as the Crazy Squirrel Lady.
That's one that's been on my radar a long time. I love that Rowan Atkinson is in it, too.

Kathy won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this performance. Another great Stephen King novel made into a Movie is Dolores Claiborne, also starring Kathy Bates. According to Bates this is the film performance that she is most proud of. It’s also a great movie.
Kathy Bates should have won an Oscar for Dolores Claiborne too. She was amazing in that film and it's actually her favorite career character portrayal. It truly is the Stephen King forgotten gem. You can see a great reaction to Dolores Claiborne from Flach Films. It's finally getting the attention it deserves.

I love how when’re Ashleigh is nervous or stressed she sings things, such as “Stop shaking the peer jar...”. Classic.
Fun Fact: When books are adapted to film, there can be some changes made and Misery is no exception. Here is my favorite change. In this film, it is quite clear that Paul soaks Misery's Return in lighter fluid and sets it alight, destroying it. In the book, we are lead to believe he has done that but, after Annie is dead, it is revealed that he put the title page onto a stack of blank paper and burned it to distract Annie. It turns out he loved the book as much as Annie did and had it published after he was rescued.
I love the bit at the end, when the waitress stops to tell Paul she's his "Number 1 Fan", and you can see him trying so hard to be polite while at the same time he's struggling not to vomit.
But maybe they could have had the apparition saying it, before it cut back to show she was someone else.

Lauren Bacall played Paul's agent. Lauren Bacall was married to Humphrey Bogart. See her in the Big Sleep. Her hubbub starred with her in several films and each and every one is a gem.

She just sizzled on screen. For a later film, she was fantastic in one of my favorite movies of all time, the first adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, directed by Sidney Lumet.
From "The Big Sleep", it's on to "The Maltese Falcon", and especially "Casablanca". I've been lobbying for "Casablanca" here forever, and still maintain that it should've been a Valentine's Day romance last month.

This movie is the classic example of I'm glad I saw it but I can never watch it a second time.

Fun fact: In the novel, when the hobbling scene happens, Annie actually cuts off Paul's feet with an axe, and then immediately cauterized the wounds with a propane torch.
Also, in the movie, the hobbling scene was done without CGI effects, as CGI in 1990 was still not the greatest. Prosthetic legs of James Caan were made, and they were filled with gelatin and PVC pipe, along with hinges in the ankles.

Also, there's no reason to use CG for such a simple effect. They still use practical effects for shots like that.

Kathy Bates is one of my favorite actors. Her presence always elevates the scene.
I used to watch Misery so many times, every time I loved it and I still love the movie. As I will never get tired to rewatch it... the suspense works so perfectly that I can still be in tension for some of the most intense scenes of the movie.
I remember seeing this in the theater. During the "hobble" scene, in a packed theater, the whole audience gasped and cried out in horror and the reaction to that scene lingered for about a good two minutes.
When the sheriff is shot, in addition to the reactions of shock, you could just feel the energy go out of the audience. This movie was so incredibly well done, and I'll say it, movies of this caliber aren't made anymore. It seems that all we get are superhero vehicles, sequels, remakes and agenda pieces.

Maybe for good reason? I'm not trying to be a smartass. It's one of the reasons why spooky movies aren't made that often: if every movie that was released month after month had nothing but jump scares, then people would get used to them. I'd point out Saw was sorta in the same genre, but frankly I'm no fan of Stephen King, nor his books/movies, and I'd be content to leave his works in their own genre. Saw was scary horrific. Stephen King's movies are just twisted drama (when it is plausible reality) or twisted fantasy to me. My point to ragging on King is that I don't really consider his work to be HORROR. Twisted yes, but not creepy at least not in the traditional sense. My brother LOVES Stephen King and he says it's because no film maker can adequately adapt his stories to film.
@@Leon-wz1js I wasn't referring to movies of that genre. I was saying that movies of this quality are no longer made. The list that I came up with is what we seemingly get all the time. The real tragedy is that I'm betting that there are hundreds of scripts sitting on shelves and in boxes gathering dust that would make absolutely fantastic films with the right resources behind them. But studios are only content to follow the money and shovel out the same old, same old year after year.

man! the ankles and the major jump scare of her next to the bed still gets me everytime! the guy who plays the cop, Richard Farnsworth, has one of the best roles i've seen in David Lynch's movie "the Straight story"! it's a must watch for sure! and of coarse Kathy Bates and James Caan are perfect! your reactions were perfect as well! see you in the next one!

Also, this movie was directed by Rob Reiner, Carl Reiner's son, who got his big break in show business as Meathead in All in the Family. He also directed The Princess Bride. One of his other movies you should see is Spinal Tap.

Hard to believe this came out just one year after When Harry Meet Sally (that Ashleigh reacted to last month). Such drastic different genre films, yet I'm pretty sure there's a scene in Misery where you can see a video cassette of Sally in the background of a store.

I've mentioned this one a few times and I will always agree. "Fried Green Tomatoes" is a MUST WATCH for ANY Kathy Bates fan.
I absolutely adored your reaction video!!! Yes, this is a fantastic horror/thriller movie. I don't watch it very often because it is so terrifying and yes, there are some really outre humorous moments. But your take on it is Priceless.
Great Stephen King adaptation. A few others which are also good: The Shining, Cujo, Stand By Me, Christine, The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, It & Thinner.

James Caan plays Wil Ferrell's Father in the movie ELF.
Misery is definitely a genuine classic. “Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight”... reminds me that 1987’s “The Untouchables” should be on your to-see list... as well as 1993’s “The Fugitive”.

Misery and Silence of the lambs, are easily my favorite, horror, triller movies. I wished I could’ve seen the Misery-hobbling scene in a packed theater.
lol your reaction from 9:00 to 9:15 was hilarious. Perfectly articulates how everyone feels at that moment in the film. I love "Misery", one of my favorite films. It's so good, even 31 years later.
She won the Oscar for her performance in this. One of the most deserving winners of the Best Actress award in my opinion.

James Caan's most famous role was Sonny (Sandino) Corleone in the first two Godfather movies.
He also was in the tear jerker ABC TV movie Brian's Song.
He was also in the very underrated Rollerball, a dystopian science fiction movie that actually was dead accurate in too many ways.
"El Dorado" (1966) a great western was one of his (James Caan) first appearences... Regarding Kathy Bates: please take a look to "Fried Green Tomatoes" (1991)...

While I recognize The Godfather was a good movie, I wouldn't say it's Caan's "most famous" movie, because he didn't star in it. The two I think of as starring in it are Brando and maybe Pacino. Mostly Brando (the title IS Godfather and not Sonny). Whereas Caan starred in the other two movies you mentioned.
I agree Rollerball is underrated.

My 9-year-old ass watched this and Silence of the Lambs when they came out and pretty much stopped watching scary movies after that.
Silence of the Lambs needs to be on the movie review list.

Omg. So good. I read the book before I saw the movie. I was in the top bunk of my college dorm room, reading with a clip-on light through the night (as one does with Stephen King novels), trying not to disturb my roommate's sleep. In college, I suddenly had the freedom to read every book I was not allowed to read growing up, so I had Stephen King & V.C. Andrews reading marathons, lol. Anyway, all was well until THAT infamous passage. In the still of the night, I suddenly screamed, "OH MY GOD!" which scared the hell out of my Norwegian roommate. Every time I see the movie, I'm right back in my bunk, with that clip-on light, speed-reading for all I'm worth. 😂
I have to say, this movie is brilliant on multiple levels. I have OCD and anytime someone messes with my stuff I do have a mild manic meltdown so as soon as I saw that stupid penguin figurine I KNEW what was going to happen and I swear to god I sat through half this movie having an anxiety attack. I wanted that penguin fixed lol Once she mentioned she knew because of that penguin I felt relieved for a moment because I knew she fixed it, but then I had an anxiety attack over what she did lol One of my favorite thrillers of all time. Kathy EARNED that Oscar. She truly did. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen to this day. She played a perfectly convincing psychopath.
