First let me say thank you to all of my faithful supporters and friends out there. I really appreciate you guys so much!
Update: The 5DSR does not have built in wifi. This is my mistake. It is "wifi compatible" for file transfer with the WFT-E7. I apologize for this.
Having shot with both of these cameras now for over 6 weeks, this is the very best information I can give you about them. Ive done my best to trim down the length, but if you are serious about investing into either one of these cameras, this will be worth your time.

Look at you all cinematic in that opening sequence! Great vid, Michael.
+Tony Northrup Whats up with the high ISO performance in stills, Tony? I don't know which one of you to believe!! :D
According to Dpreview and many others the Sony A7Rii has better low light capability than Canon 5Dsr!(Check the iso12800 the DP studio scene like the shoes & blue trausers in the centre of the scene in low light for example)Also If you look carefuly at your comparison images at iso 12800 you will see that Sony has focused on the hair rather than on models eye..That doesn't change however the fact the the colors of Canon are better in general and photos slightly sharper in good light.
I thought the Sony was sharper. I saw the cheek issue they are talking about but the eye was OBVIOUSLY sharper on the video.
The Intro got me laughing when you grab 6 sony A7RII batteries 😂
:) you got my joke!
I cannot wait for to review the new D5 and Canon 1Dx Mark II that will be ultimate stress test.
+ACiD_ “Th3xRaVeNx” ReinX I know I'm 2 months late, but I'm not a subscriber, but that 6 batteries... Still laughing.

i use the camera on the moon with a main power battery
Great review ! Thanks!
Great comparison! It's just SO crazy how far we have come with photography tech. I'm speaking coming from a film background. Now it's just basically pick what fits your style of shooting and ergonomics.
so much effort put into making these detailed comparison. *applause*
This is a video that I have been so waiting for! Very extensive!
This is simply great. Very extensive and detailed. Amazing video as always
Your portrait test is the most awesome thing I ever see! What a good idea!!!
one if the best reviews I've ever seen.....detailed and executed perfectly
This site is the very best technical and user oriented camera comparison that a user can make decisions from. He works very hard to really test fairly and I rarely watch all the way through most other's CZcams as they are opinionated and amateur. This one was terrific.
Wow, that is indeed an EPIC shootout!
I'm amazed at to what details, and methodology of measuring and comparing performances of the cameras!
Most people can learn a LOT about photography just by watching one of your 'comparison' videos Michael!
I'm a guy that REALLY hate cross-selling in general, but after this video I do actually consider the 'a7rII crash-course'!
Excelent Michael! Most complete, less biased, congrats!
highly recomended!
liked and favorited
This is so extensive and well made, I can't imagine all the hard work you did. Although you did it without bias, I can see you're pretty excited about A7R II.
the review i like the most, accurate and honest with proof to show to the audiences, and the most important is, coolest intro i have ever seen on camera review. Great Review !!
Best Review and comparison between the two so far.
Fantastic review , you put a lot of hard in absolutely brilliant!!!!
Great work Michael! Super like your vids. Nobody on the tube has more info than your head to head shootouts.
Thank you for your support- there are a lot of great channels out there so it means a lot to me to hear that
Sweet shootout, Michael. Really informative.
Thanks very much for an excellent review. Tons of good information. Looking forward to your new videos.
Great videos.we appreciate your efforts! Thank you!
Love the video Michael. Your videos are excellent. Thank you for the excellent review.
Very informative , as always. Thanks
Well worth the waiting. Your channel so addictive.
Hi Michael- great tutorial! Really useful tests-especially the portrait test! Thanks so much- you do a great job!
Thank you Ava!
This video is brilliant!!! You've earned a sub!
Thank you. Best video shootout. Amazing amount of information.
Very well done review and comparison. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the excellent review of both cameras, well produced and full of useful info. I'm leaning towards the 5dsr but waiting to see what canon has in the 5dmk4 whenever it's announced
That was like the best and deeeeepet in depth video I have seen on here,,, and have seen many bu now. Thanx! :-)
Great video, it is really helps me to decide which camera i have to own, thank you very much for your efforts
Great video, I love the straight to the point but details comparison
Fantastic comparison. Thank you. For street photography which camera would you recommend if I already have lots of EF lens?
At last a honest and full review, I'm glad to see that the 5DSR actually can keep up with the Sony's ISO performance, we've been hearing the opposite since the Sony was released. Seems to me the Canon is a lot more mature.
An exceptional video of its kind. Personally, I'd dial down the graphics a little, but so informative and thorough.
i just love watching your videos. thanks for all the effort ......
My pleasure and thank you for your support
Michael, very nice and informative video as always. I know it's not easy to make these videos. I appreciate your work.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
Awesome test!
Can i ask you if you have a Sony with newest 2.0 firmware and if not, can this change even anything in tests?
Excellent tutorial. Thanks.
I love how unbelievably tacky all the graphics are, it's like shouting I AM A MAN periodically in an otherwise civilised presentation haha. Awesome video Michael
Amazing review!!! Question for you. I shoot weddings with EOS R and 5D3. 5D3 image quality is trash compared to the R and makes editing pictures hard, would you recommend the 5DSR if I can’t afford the 5D4?
Thank you for the comparison!
Very nice review! Especially the real cases
Thank you mike great job!!!!
Great job on this video! :D I really liked that I got to see for myself which picture I liked the most! Very original and great for us to skip the names and only look at quality! For me, the results were 6 vs 6 :)
That into... Was... AWESOME!!!! 😀
Amazingly well done review. Congrats!
I would expect that the high iso performance would be better on the Sony and other review speak highly of the Sony metering and AWB (but maybe Canon is even slightly better). Did you try to use native Sony lenses while doing the high iso portraits? Maybe it is also worth trying the uncompressed RAW option that was just delivered in a firmware upgrade with the Sony.
This is a very informative review! I was a bit surprised at the lack of sharpness in the studio scene for the Sony at high ISO. Was this a 'JPG out of camera' comparison?
I waited for this review to drop before purchasing the Sony. Thanks for being so thorough and unbiased. always nice to see the facts as opposed to the opinions.
Thank you my friend. I'm honored you waited, I really try to present the data and let my viewers come to their own conclusions.
Got the camera... I am in love with it!
I went with the Canon 5DS R. This is a good review, thanks.
another nice shootout!, can you please do one for printers? I'm looking into getting a printer to print my own pictures as a enthusiast and have more control over them. no idea which one would be good.
also, would be cool to see a 5Dsr vs D810/A.
excellent in-depth video. Kudos!
Thank you Sam
nice review, thanks very much.
Those 12 comparison images... 10 out of 12 I liked A7R II before I saw the results, and that's the camera I have. :D
Just watched and still helpful
Thanks again for a thorough review. Wow, I'm surprised I selected all of the Sony pics in the blind test! I'm usually close to even on your Canon vs. Nikon tests. Maybe it's time to rent a Sony A7rii.
Great review Michael!
I was surprised that Mark found Sony viewfinder at X .78 magnification smaller than Canon at X .71
Me too. I think he felt that way for all the display information that was up on the screen at the time, as it skirts the outer border, makes it feel smaller. Easy to turn off, and always strange when using a new system
MichaelTheMentor Makes sense, I usually have simple display in EVF
Many thanks for the video, very useful for me ...
Love the intro! Good job!
This is a real review test, seriously.
Fantastic review, thanks for the guidance. Pls I would appreciate a Sony a99ii image quality review with canon 5dsr. Good job
Best and most thorough camera review I've ever watched. I have a Canon 40D, which is obviously dated, and I have five expensive EF L lenses that could work on this camera with an adapter, but I'm looking for touch-screen controls, an easy to use wifi feature that works like my Note 4 does in sharing videos. Canon just introduced the 5D Mark IV, but it doesn't have an articulating screen, has low resolution, has complicated wifi, and average focus capabilities and still has anti-aliasing built in that softens images too much.
Thanks for the great review.
Thank you soooo much!
Great video thanks
one more extraordinary review from Michaelthementor.. Lots of thumbs up and shares needed people 👍
Thank you Paul - the shares and likes are the exact reason why I keep making these!
Great work MichaelTheMentor!!
thanks for your great work.I m surprised by iso test. 5dsr is not that bad.
Thoroughly informative nd detailed video. Gr8 work @MichaeltheMemtor
An objective, thorough and as fair a shootout as one could hope for, a lot of hard work well done and greatly appreciated.
Good idea for the quiz, my scoring was 7/12 in favour of the A7RII
Thank you for your support lou
great informative video!
Great Video, thank you..
holy crap, i choosed 10 pic from 5dsr and 2 pic from a7r2.
I wan to know what mode you shoot those pic in ?
The result differ alot from what I testing with my canon 6D vs my A7r2
Hey Michael, love the video.
In regard to having the viewfinder function as an optical viewfinder. What I do on my A7 is that that I turn Live View Display settings to Off. Then the camera doesn't have to process the image to the viewfinder as much. On the A7 its in menu gear.2.Live View Display.
You talked about Eye-Af being awesome for portrait shooters. I would have loved to hear your friends (the portrait guy in the video) opinion about that. :)
Michael, do you have a setup video for the Canon 5DSR like you have for my Canon 90D?
Sony 9, Canon 3. I was surprised. Great review as always :)
its so much helpful for me .
I'm just an amateur but curious just the same, wondering whether recording with the A7R2 onto an external HDMI recorder (rather than onto the onboard card) would prevent overheating? Also, would that allow for longer recording duration? And what if you were recording for a time lapse onto the card, how long would it be in one go before the A7R2 shuts down?
Very well balanced review, great job, though some important features of the A7RII could be addressed in more detail - MUCH smaller size (great for e.g. street photography especially with silent shutter), internal image stabilization (just mentioned) and ability to use almost any lens via available adapters (with stabilization!). For many photographers, those could be quite the points.
PERFECT REVIEW !
Really interesting review. Especially because a lot of people say it has a slow AF. Would a A7 II perform similar?
Great video!
Got A7RII, Fantastic Camera! Can do any types of genres with it and film making as well.
Very, very nice comparsion!!! :)
For the future test - sport shooting with A7, 5D and D810... A7 whith AF and old MF lenses - does it really so imported fast autofocus?!
excellent review
Hi Michael, it would be fantastic if you could do an epic shootout between the flagships Nikon d4/4s vs canon 1dx!!
Thanks for the great insight, in the running pictures you use AF-C. But can you please tell what kind of focus point and what the setup you where using here, Thanks!
Its a good question. I am also wondering wich sensor is "sharper"? Meaning which sensor has the least effect of the AA filter. How do they differ. One says "No AA filter", the other says"Cancelled AA filter effect", WTFilter are they talking about???
Where can I find the tutorial for the eye detection? And, will this work on newer other Sony mirror less cameras?
On the topic of the A7Rii banding:
Did you have silent shutter turned on or did it manage to band even without that?
You will want to use the LA-EA3 with the 7RII instead of the 4. The AF system can support phase detection for A-mount lenses on it's own.
I have shot with the a7r iii, but unfortunately not the 5dsr. I LOVE the a7r iii. It is a truly amazing camera.
WOW!!! That is an amazing comparison you did there, I hope the 80D vs. a6300 comparison is even half as good.
One question, what camera/lens/video setting did you use for the outdoor walk n' talk part of your video at the beginning and end? There are some issues with the compression of it that I have suffered from when shooting 4K outdoors on sharp lenses with my GH4.
It was a gh4 on a pilot fly gimbal
MichaelTheMentor As I suspected. Thanks!
By the way, I think you probably want to shoot in 4K, but I have found that for walk n' talks like that where there is a lot of detail in the frame, the 1080p60 All-I 200Mbps provides a much better looking product on CZcams (when rendered and uploaded as 60fps anyway)... GH4 action shots in 4K that are rendered and uploaded as 4K don't seem to work well with CZcams's compression.
Well done review
Your comparison videos, in my opinion, are the best. BTW, how many batteries do you recommend to bring when shooting with A7RII for a day?
+Rui Wang 6-7
Fair review.
michael youre fantastic man! great job! do u have a chance to use sony a7ii, do you recommend this camera?
Haven't shot with the a7ii, therefore i can't say
+MichaelTheMentor thank you for answering
Michael, if you were to choose between the new 5D Mark iv and the 5Dsr for weddings and portraits which one would you choose? I am upgrading from my 6D and I am now in this predicament. I am leaning towards the 5D4 because all of the extra gimmicks its has but I love the best image possible.
Anthony M if high mp doesn’t matter to you go 5dsr if 4K dual pixel AF touch screen all rounder go for 5d mark 4
5dsr more for photographers that do landscape portrait journalism outdoor
5d mark 4 is all round of you want the touch screen 4k video good photo quality dual pixel AF
I be honest I tried both there are great but my pc couldn’t handle the 5dsr high mp files even it was fantastic image quality but 5d m4 3Omp is more than in enough its your choice
I have my lucky 5d m3 24-70 24-105 my lucky 50mm for the time been by 2019 if there is no good cameras from canon I go for 5dm4 big MP but I like well balanced product
Thanks for a great review. Another plus for the Sony is the weight and size, which makes it much easier and more comfortable to carry and hold. While this may not apply to everyone, it does to me.
That Definitely a huge plus that I didn't mention. This size and weight reduction over DSLR bodies and lenses is significant.
Turn up the led light to remove the "banding"
Thanks a lot for the 12 comparaison test. I got 11 to 12 for the canon. It's just so personnal but I just love the look of canon. I was really considering switching according to test like DXO provides, but really theory is something to put in practice. Thank you very much and sorry for my average english.
you are a professor. super video.
