It's truly a shame New York doesn't put forth even a fraction of this effort. Yes, they stock. But the number of rivers, the quality of those rivers, and the protection of those rivers keeps shrinking. They'd rather chase the dollars the chinooks bring.
Another thought I've had is if the original brood stock is an ocean run salmon, maybe they should try and use the fresh water landlocked strain in the great lakes.
The landlocked strain is extinct (and they can’t use landlocked strains from New England either as those are much smaller fish), that should be blatantly obvious.
@bkjeong4302 there are landlocked atlantics in inland lakes all the way from Eastern Quebec to Labrador. They arent as big but that could be due to the lack of food. Lake ontario is full of bait I'm sure they'd get bigger then average
Why not build better fish ladders with easier access for the fish?? The commentator actually said “ most fish don’t find the access ladder”. Well then,,,,, fix that and you’ll have better returns.
Monumental amount of money and manpower has been spent on this with very little success. It's been over a decade now in this latest attempt....time to pull the plug.
Garbage useless program - would be better if you restocked more of rainbows and samons - why restock atlantic that cant even spawn properly out of ontario - waste of money

pretty unsuccessful program...I have never catch one and dont know anyone that has caught one
I have cuahgt and release 4 this year.
It took many years for the initial pacific salmon stocking program to see good returns too way back when. These things simply take a lot of time.
