  • Holiday or vacation sketching is pretty high on a lot of artists list. Who doesn't want to come back from a trip whether at home or abroad, with a travel journal full of lively sketches of your destination? They dutifully pack a few (or a lot) of supplies. And guess what? The supplies come back with a great sun tan, but haven't been used. I want to share my travel sketchbook, not because it is perfect in anyway, but it shows what can be done in a short time to capture lots of wonderful travel and holiday memories. I hope it inspires you to do a travel sketchbook or your own on your next vacation.
    This sketchbook is a mix of urban sketching, nature journal, a diary and notebook. Most sketchers were done from life, but some were done from photos. Most are line and wash, as I find that the fastest way to capture my impressions of a place.
    I've just returned from a six week trip to Hawaii, Australia and Thailand (I know, I am incredibly lucky) and was determined to keep a travel sketchbook to remind me of this amazing trip. Sketching your surroundings is a brilliant way of improving your mindfulness, getting to know your destination better, improving your art, making your memories stronger and meeting new people. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
    But this trip was for my husband, so I didn't want to hijack it and so I kept most sketches to 20-30 minutes and did one every other day (ish). I thought that was pretty fair.
    I took as few supplies as possible:
    Etchr watercolour sketch book
    Stabilo Point 88 pens - black and brown
    Pigment fineliners - black and sepia - in a range of widths 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.8mm
    Waterbrush
    Spritz bottle
    Derwent line and wash paint set with a few added colours
    No pencil or eraser - no time to erase mistakes!!
    Here are some films you might also find helpful:

    Review of Etchr watercolour book - • Which is the best sket...

    In the near future I will put together a film about my top tips and hints for travel sketching, so please watch out for that. Each week I do a short film to share a technique or subject, so please like and subscribe and hit the notification bell and you will know when the next one is out.
    I also run a lovely, friendly Facebook group which is a great place to meet up with like minded artists, to share your work or to ask questions. You can find it here: groups/watercolourstudiowithlizchaderton.

      Glad you enjoyed them and yes it was really varied. I thought I would find Hawaii the most interesting (been to Thailand before), but I found Australia fascinating, not only geographically but because we have so much in common, but are so different

    I love how you made a diary out of it! I don't think I could ever do this because we are always on the run on every adventure we've ever been on. The only time it gets a little slower is when we are on a cruise and it is an at sea day. That's when I met a wc artist on board who showed me her sketchbook and the water brushes. I got a lot of info from her in the hour or so which turned me on to wc! I'm a photographer first so I always have had a keen eye for subjects and always shoot several thousand pics while on a trip of 14-21 days. I have my shots of Sydney also and the Blue Mountains. We cruised to Figi and Vanuatu and other islands in that string. I should go back through all those and paint some. You should have gone to New Zealand while you were in the area. It's most beautiful! 😍

    Do you know, what I 've been thinking while watching? I thought, what a big gift it is, to be able to see colours,paint what you see and capture the very essence of the places you 've been to! It felt like I 've been transported to the times before cinema, before photography, before all those gadgets,that are around us today. Imagine, sitting in your salon, dainty sipping tea and showing your sketches of the far, far places, where not many people even now can get to, but imagine, how would it be then! In those times your trip would take maybe a whole year! Probably, longer... And all your guests (us, lucky viewers) would have a chance to have a glimpse of the world far far beyond and listen to your stories and be totally amazed at all wonderful and strange things you 've seen and recorded in your sketches!
    New subscriber here, just saying hi and thank you for your films, each and every one of them is an invaluable gift , I started at the very beginning and catching up with modern times now,learned a lot, and just want you to know,how grateful I am for your gifts of knowledge and experience and all what you do on this channel!

      What a wonderful and thoughtful comment. In the olden days, I would have probably never left my village! it is such a privilege to be able to travel and a pleasure to share the sketches.

      @ellenp7455 Před rokem +2

      @@LizChadertonArt
      There is nothing wrong with never leaving the village as well, the beauty is where we find it!
      Since I started drawing, it came to me that people who draw( or paint) see the world around them more vividly, they are more present in the moment. Snapping a photo doesn't (usually) take a long time and sometimes people don't even take another look at what they took a picture of, just snap! and go, sort of... When you sit and try to put it down on your page, all sorts of things start to pop up suddenly, because you are not only looking,but seeing also!
      Maybe, the result is far away from the Idea in the head, but it's not the point. Many years ago me and my little daughter went to the zoo, and instead of camera we took a sketchbook and a pencil. We would go to the animal enclosures and take 3-5 minutes to make a sketch, taking turns. Now, those imperfect hurried sketches are among my most treasured possessions, I wouldn't trade even the most scribbly one of them for photos. ( There's nothing wrong with photos, it's just some people prefer handmade with a personal touch)
      I feel deep gratitude to people like you,who take time of their day to teach others and show them the way it could be done, so I wish you lots and lots of good karma and all the best!

    ..do you think is it possible anybody to paint in watercolour in 30 minutes? I have only 30 minutes in the evening. But if i do i feel tremendous pressure of time not fun. Also most of the 30 minutes go in planning and preparing

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Před rokem

      Pure watercolour in 30 mins is tough, line and wash is very possible. The fun depends if you see it as a challenge or a constraint... Also choose your subject carefully.
