- This past episode of RuPaul's Drag Race season 14 was...shocking to say the least. Never before have we seen the show's most beloved and consistent challenge, the Snatch Game, edited to be the mess this season's was.
It got me thinking, was this really the worst Snatch Game of all time? Bad enough to put everyone in the bottom and basically scold the entire cast for flopping so hard? I went through every RuPaul hosted Snatch Game (23 of them to be exact) to figure out which ones made Ru cackle the most, and which ones had the most awkward silences.

I would just like point out that Pearl was TOTALLY SNUBBED during her snatch game because her Big Ang was HILARIOUS and now I feel justified. Also, I didn't think Bosco or Lady Camden were bad. I've been saying the 'adjacent' line this past week. lol

Big Ang was AWESOME and from what we saw, it seemed like she belonged in the top with Ginger and Kennedy over Katya. But the Snatch Game was pretty darn good.

I get that season 5 is iconic but I’m not at all surprised at it having the worst snatch game by your laugh count. Detox pissing on the floor and Alyssa having to formally apologize makes the snatch game absolutely abysmal by itself
Not to mention that after Alyssa's performance they had to get rid of the immunity thing.

@@antoineleclerc5638 That might just be personal preference honestly! Maybe its just not the smartest move to make in front of a large audience, because a lot of people don’t like it. I personally don’t find piss or fart jokes funny at all, so the Daytona Winds episode on Season 14 really didn’t amuse me at all😂
I hope I don't sound ridiculous but... Camdem's Shakespeare wasn't that bad, if they wanted to, she could've been edited funny. I mean, the delivery wasn't there, but the jokes were funny and her being the parody of the parody has proved in the past to be safe worthy. 🤷♂

It’s unfortunate that editing so strongly influences how we view snatch game. Multiple queens on season 5 and 8 have come out and said that Coco and Derrick were hilarious, and we just didn’t see that at all in the final product

This is also why it wasnt really properly explained why Tayce was top and Awhora bottom on the UKS2 Snatch Game.. Lots of Tayce was cut out, the bad bits of Awhora not shown

I thought Daya’s Ozzy, Camden’s Shakespeare, and Boscoe’s Gwenyth had AT LEAST one joke I really laughed at.
It wasn’t good overall, but I can’t help but wonder what’d it feel like without production forcing the “terrible” storyline

Completely agree. One of the reasons I strongly dislike UK Season 3's Snatch Game as a whole. Everyone was asked to change their characters when Ru spoke to them in the work room (except we didn't see footage of Krystal or Vanity), and the only girls that didn't change their characters ended up in the bottom.
I think Bianca Del Rio's Judge Judy is the most overrated snatch game performance of all time. People love to give Silky shit saying she was just playing herself when she did TS Madison, but Bianca was playing herself when she did Judge Judy so what's the difference between the two of them
Yeah, I really liked Bianca's performance, but it's way less funny than people make it out to be
I feel like the best snatch games find that happy medium between queens cosplaying other people while just acting like themselves vs acting like the celebrity and forgetting to make it funny. That’s why I think many people see Kylie’s Dolly as successful, Bianca as Judge Judy, and Jinx’ Judy Garland. 1) because you could see these queens saying/doing any of their one liners from snatch game sincerely and 2) it’s absurd to think of their character/celebrity doing or saying that, then it becomes funny.

I genuinely think that they sabotaged the queens this week. I found myself laughing when there was that stupid "this sucks" sound effect that they used. RuPaul knows how to turn on the fake laugh and she deliberately chose not to. They wanted some lip sync smackdown from the beginning and saw the opportunity even though there was a clear bottom two in my opinion.
nah the girls sucked. there was ZERO jokes to be found this season

@@yupthatsme5257 There were funny jokes, but even so, a lot of the moments get cut out. The game lasts much longer than 12 minutes. Angie talked about doing all of Tammie's famous quotes, something that would usually appear in the final cut, but not a single one made it in

Did you consider doing a "Laughs per minute" calculation to account for seasons with less time? Great video, but I'm wondering if the rankings would have been different. For ex: on season 6 they only got 20 laughs but it was 6 mins long (on youtube) vs season 14 which was 14 minutes long and got 25 laughs. If you divide the laughs for season 6 - 20/6 you get 3.3 laughs per minute. If you divide the laughs for season 14 - 25/14 you get 1.8 laughs per minute. This maybe shows why this felt like such a flop. we had a lot less laughs per minute we spent watching it! Thanks for compiling all the info and watching these all again for us!
I agree entirely! Or taking the total laughs/the total answers to get a more accurate ratio. Comparing the seasons like this isn’t entirely fair

This feel like a much more fair system. Tho I'm not one to talk because my way of judging snatchgame is kind of biased
Absolutely agree, and they even mention the problem with different video lenghts at the start of the video. I generally don't think that just counting Ru's laughs per game (or even per min) is the best heuristic. 1. As they said: sometimes Ru laughs AT the Queens and not with them. Laughter has a social context. 2. Sometimes she'll laugh genuinely as well even though the camera cuts to the guest judges. Excluding them doesn't seem right. Even if Ru didn't laugh then - seeing guest judges laugh makes it funnier for us viewers as well.
I think a mere quantitative analysis will always fall short (and a qualitative approach would be suited better).
I’m convinced Willow manifested this edit when she said they were all performing so strong that one week they were all going to suck. I’m sure producers were losing their shit over the possibility of that many bottom placements. It’s a stage with no audience so no background laughs, Ru is refusing to laugh I’m sure they put the pressure on them and made the atmosphere so dead none of them could make any jokes land past a certain point

I think every season was judged fairly. You guys just want a fan fav to win for some reason. Regardless, if it was judged as it should be or not, the placement of any Queen is fair and so is the elimination. They signed up for exposure and their careers to be taken to the next level not really to be America's next Drag Superstar. It's just something they threw in to keep the stakes, tension and drama at all time high

Getting put in the bottom for a joke working so well that it made her want to keep doing it when other queens got zero jokes across is still crazy to me.
Say what you want about Chi Chi on Allstars, but her "the caged bird sings because...I don't know why the caged bird sings" will always be funny to me. And I think she could have played out the fact that she didn't really know who she was trying to impersonate (similar to how Blue did a dirty Mary Berry).

I honestly cracked tf up at Bosco's cumbucha joke, like so loud and so long. I don't get why there weren't laughs at that joke. I definitely think they were set up to not think they were doing well cause there were some decent jokes in there. Not the best snatch game but definitely better than it was made out to be.
So what we learned from this video is that Alexis Mateo has been robbed of two wins.
The second hand emabarrassment I got from watching this snatch game was so strong that I almost couldn't finish it. Thank god for the speedy montage at the end.
In defense of s5: it’s been revealed by queens on the season Alaska was great but almost all of it got cut because of how Blue her Lady bunny was. There’s some missing laughs there

I believe that a LaLa PaRuza was planned from the start of the season and the producers just waited for a challenge where people didn’t do GREAT to put everyone in the bottom

Imo this ranking system is flawed, since some snatch games have more queens, therefore sometimes having an advantage or disadvantage, and also sometimes rupaul gives pity laughs like when they're presenting themselves
Also I know there was the disclaimer but the fact that *all* the early seasons were in the bottom (even S5) in terms of number of laughs really shows that Ru has been slowly amping up his laughter even if the performance didn't really warrant it.
I mean he’s not a statistician but he could have just normalized the results to account for differences in time and in the number of queens.. It’s just a simple division
Plus Ginger got zero laughs in AS2 which is clearly misleading since the punchline was Ru acting concerned

I think Snatch Game is seen as "good" not because there aren't any bad queens, but because there is a nice mix of REALLY good and REALLY bad queens. Season 14 may have apparently gotten more laughs, but none of them really stood out as especially good or even horrifyingly bad, just boring and bland, and even Deja has not much quotable, apart from the "Yeah".

Only 8 minutes into this, I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Ru laughs at Jaidynn’s intro.
I really feel like this isn’t a great system to use cuz there’s like, courtesy laughing, nervous laughing, along with a bird sounding laugh (Ru’s reaction to “a sensible 74”) that is worth way more to me than a giggle to me (reaction to Karen’s “bout an 11”). I’d kinda like to know the counter for awkward silence/Ru going “okay…alright” to signal an unfunny joke, but I know it’s hard to quantify these things.
Edit: Just checked, Ru doesn’t laugh at Jaidynn but he does shout “OH MY GOODNESS!” I’d give that a half a point but I’m generous

For people who are curious about where the AS7 Snatch Game falls on the list, I did the math:
The game had a total of 77 laughs, snatching the 1st place on the list.
If maybe you want to consider as two different snatch games because of the break to change characters, the 1st half had 37 laughs (getting the 5th place) while the second half had 40 laughs (getting the 4th place).
LAUGH COUNTER:
Jinkx: 21 laughs (5 + 16)
Trinity: 14 laughs (4 + 10)
Monet: 10 laughs (7 + 3)
Jaida: 10 laughs (9 + 1)
Raja: 7 laughs (4 + 3)
Shae: 6 laughs (4 + 2)

For me I didn’t think the snatch game was ‘bad’ but I felt a lot of the performances were simply just average which made Deja stand out further. But I think it was also edited to give no one laughs simply for this gag of the lip sync battle.
I will FOREVER stan Pearl’s snatch game performance and personally I think she was the clear winner😍

Fun to see how this criteria shakes out, though a laugh can mean a lot of things. How loud was the laugh? Was it with or at the queen? How clever or unique is the point of view of the performance? Did they transcend the game? A hard thing to quantify but I appreciate your effort here. Thanks!

I understand that this was just a project to do that wouldn't conflict with your riggory of S14 video, but I disagree with this criteria being used to judge Snatch Games. You mention multiple times in the video that editing of Snatch Games has changed over time, which has definitely included an increase in laughs to make Snatch Game more entertaining. The editors have simply gotten better at editing to make it entertaining. So why would the Season 14 cast getting more laughs be indicative of how they performed? If they wanted to make it obvious that everyone bombed, they would have edited all laughs out entirely, so I think they were throwing us a bone by keeping in the laughs that Ru would force in the first place so that we were entertained. You also show how mediocre Snatch Games have gotten way more laughs than you'd expect throughout the video, which literally just proves that laughs have nothing to do with how good a Snatch Game performance is.
I agree that there was probably some producer meddling going on to make Ru not respond to decent jokes, but I bet they told him to do that once they saw how bad some queens were doing. If it was the plan from the beginning, why would Ru know to laugh at DeJa's jokes?
Yeah. It simply doesn’t prove his point that basically the S14 Snatch Game was “rigged”. It is just indicative of how prominent RuPaul’s laughs are nowadays. The better metric of good snatch games is fan reception, not this kind of criteria.
They didn't just spontaneously add an entire lipsync smackdown episode because they realized right there that the queens are bombing. This was all planned well ahead. But I agree that laughs are not indicative of how good or bad a snatch game is. This S14 snatch game is objectively bad (largely due to the editing to give the impression of bombing), so that making into #10 doesn't make sense anyway. The criteria are not correctly chosen.
@@babayevsky i would describe the Snatch Game as extremely mediocre. The performances weren’t really bad, but they were not good at all. I honestly don’t think it was that difficult for the producers to make this snatch game “look bad”.
Agree. RuPaul is forcing more laughter for favored queens period in funny challenges, not just in the snatch game. It's not just the length of the segment that has changed, but also the amount of organic laughter from Ru. Maybe there should have been a poll, and it should have been considered how much the guests laughed too, since maybe they're reactions are more organic.

Great video, I don’t agree with the ranking criteria though. If one person gets 100 laughs but everyone else in that season gets none, that snatch game could easily go up the ranks. What makes a good snatch game good imo is when the majority of contestants do well overall. Otherwise statistically Deyja would be an outlier
This is so interesting!! It really shows how everyone can judge snatch game so differently. I prefer the seasons with only a couple solid performances as opposed to one superstar icon level performance, just bc I like the queen to queen interaction and I think that’s where some of the best bits come from!
S7 is my favorite and I'm disgusted that it is lower than S11 and S14
Girl take off Deja and you get 12 laughs total. That's not a Top 10 SG. Also, you could've considered the duration of the SG as well to make it more accurate
Conspiracy theory: they thought up the lipsync episode twist before the season ever began, and purposefully 'ruined' the snatch game to A) generate all of this press which really worked, and B) justify another non-elimination episode & incorporate this pre-planned twist.
How? well, an easy way to tank someone's improv performance is cut their thinking time. We don't know how much time they usually get to answer questions, but I have a hunch it's been slowly getting reduced over recent years as the snatch games are getting longer (so ru doesn't have to stand around as long) - the producers could have purposefully given these queens significantly less time so they had less chance of thinking up a funny answer (potentially why Daya was copying Bosco's answers, and how many of the queens jokes didn't fit the question in one way or another)
ru could be purposefully not laughing at jokes to sell the storyline, and demoralise the queens into giving worse performances over the course of the snatch game. Maybe a condition of Daya's non-elimination was that she had to copy someone's answers if she got to snatch game? Who knows? That's why it's a conspiracy
I’m not inclined to get on board with conspiracies and claims of riggory. But something was definitely up. They had the rights cleared for 5 songs. Carson & Ross were both booked to shoot that day. And a pit crew member was there who presumably had to be medically cleared ahead of time. It’s hard for me to believe they pulled all that together overnight or even with a couple days, depending on the shooting schedule. That being said, it was a pretty bad SG in terms of its mediocrity. So maybe the opportunity for this type of drama just presented itself & they ran with it 🤷🏻♂️
I think a lot of S14’s laughs from Ru were out of pity, not from the queens being funny. Also, I genuinely laughed out loud at Deja everytime she said “YEAH”
Maybe I'm crazy but part of the laughs in the recent snatch game were from Ru kinda laughing *at* the queens.... like more from awkwardness than actual jokes?
I think this snatch game suffered from being Cheryl Hole’s favorite word, mediocre. Nobody pulled a Utica or a Gia or an Aiden, so it was hard to judge. And Deja absolutely was the best, but it felt more along the lines of what usually is the 2nd or 3rd best performance. It did feel like a setup though because I guess RuPaul forgot about the “Yes, and” school of acting cuz she didn’t give them ANYTHING to go off of.
Perhaps the problem is that, as seasons pass, the queens are expected to have a better performance every new season. It's been said many times "if you know you're casted for a season, take a sewing class and begin working on your Snatch Game because you know FOR SURE you will need those skills".
So it becomes more and more upsetting when someone brings a Snatch Game character that has no jokes because it's like "girl, you had time to practice", and we become more upset when it's season 14 and we think all the cast, or the majority of it, should do great because they came prepared and then we only get a few laughs here and there. Season 13 and All Stars 6 were amazing because the majority came VERY prepared.
For me it has always been more baffling when the queens are asked to change their character on the day because they at least feel some kind of connection or comfort playing that character, and unless there is someone else doing that same character, I see no point in changing what you already feel comfortable with. I always see it as Ru playing mind games with them and many times it doesn't work out for the better so I feel like we might have missed a solid couple laughs and instead we get a bad performance that only serves as drama for the judging or the elimination.
BTW I also think Lady Camden did a good job.
I don’t think the amount of laughing is the right way to go to measure how good they are. For a good snatch game, you need several people to do well and even play off each other. Deja was the only one to do that and even Deja wasn’t that good. Also I don’t think saying angira was hard to understand is nick picking. That was not Tammy brown or even close. That outfit also.
it definitely could have been better, but i honestly don’t think Camden, Bosco, Angeria or Daya did bad enough to warrant a lipsync.

no high queens
Camden, Angeria, Bosco and Daya are safe
Jorgeous is low (Bosco could go here to ig but there was at least one good joke even if it didn’t land)
Willow and Jasmine in the bottom with Jasmine going home
that being said, i am looking forward to the lipsync smack down
I honestly thought that jasmine would have been a stand out performance had they added the “funny” music cues and I would have put either jorgeous or bosco in the bottom with willow but im super excited for next week too lol

i would rather a hilarious diamond in the rough, than a bunch of semi-unmemorable, yet mostly funny queens, any day
S11 for me was the ONE TIME when the Lip Sync overshadowed the Snatch Game lol. For obvious reasons lol. I do feel bad for Silky, but the lip Sync between Yvie and Brooke was iconic.
I think season 14 is the worst, but not because the queens performed worse than in others, but because Ru and the editor were so mean-spirited that it ruined the experience of watching it. I want them to be on the side of the queens, show us the queens at their best. Don't gaslight them and humiliate them publicly in front of me. I'm absolutely sure that with 4 hours of footage, it's possible to do either.
This! When u see Raven in all stars 2 and season 14 the attitude is sooo much different. Like she came here to ruin the fun whereas back then she would laugh at anything
in my opinion the six season works so well for me because of some of those flops because without Gia we wouldn’t get some of Bianca’s lines

Season 14 is the worst because no one was iconically great or bad. Ru laughing and the mild laugh track aint gonna save it.
I feel like you need a certain level of bad/cringe performances to make an iconic Snatch Game, because those performances are still funny, purely because of how bad they are.
Seeing everyone's different opinions is so interesting, bc this episode has had the most varied opinions I've seen from fans
it's hard for me to look at the older seasons without the nostalgia bias but i think that a part of what makes the newer snatch games so impressive is that the queens continue to do well, come up with original characters and jokes when it seems like everything has already been done. and i think it totally makes sense for the all stars 5 and 6 snatch games to be at the top, not only because of how much time the queens have had to grow & develop their comedy skills but because they're incredible casts who put in a lot of work and were able to showcase that growth by bantering with each other, being more confident to try out new things, etc. sorry this kind of got away from me but i appreciate this video it made me think a lot about the different eras of drag race!

Aside from season 14, DU and Canada Season 2 were some of the hardest to sit through.

You didn't divide the number of laugh with the duration of the Snatch game to get a number of rupaul laugh per minute ? That would solve your problem i think
I believe there the reason production chose to go with this storyline for the s14 snatch game for two reasons.. to justify the lipsync smackdown that was obviously pre-planned and to knock the frontrunners down a bit. I think they knew after the non elimination episode and the double save that they had to justify the existence of a lipsync episode somehow or it would just piss off fans who felt like the last few weeks have kind of stalled the season. The other side is that throughout the competition you can tell they've tried to spread out the wins but angeria Willow Bosco and lady Camden to a lesser extent have succeeded in virtually every challenge and without this twist the other 2 spots in the top 3 this week would've probably been some combination of Angie Camden and Bosco. Getting to see basically all of the frontrunners lipsync for their life will add dynamic to their storylines while also giving production a chance to gauge their lipsync abilities while keeping the stakes of them actually getting eliminated low.

Jinkx as Little Edie and Eureka as Honey Boo Boo will always be my favorite performances, but I wouldn't say they're my fav snatch games as a whole, but I do think the snatch game with Ra'jah as Latoya Jackson is probably the best one overall!

In my opinion season 14 is the worst snatch game because of the level of expectation with every queen, they been doing great so most of the fan of the show thought that this special challenge would be fantastic and it ended of been the worst, is not about how many times Ru laugh, is about the expectation for me.

I feel like counting the laughs like you said is not the best way to measure how funny the snatch game is. Specially considering Rupaul's humor is different from the overall audience (the best example being Scarlett as macaulay culkin). My favorites snatch games are season 6 and all stars 2, I feel like almost everyone did great even if Rupaul wasn't laughing that hard. Even if I agree they edited to look worse than it actually did on season 14, it's not like they were killing it either. The only one that made me laugh was Deja, everyone else I just cringed or looked bored at. Some were not horrible, like Candem or Angeria that could've been safe for me, but overall everyone had some flaws for me, so I actually didn't mind the whole lip sync smackdown twist.
Angeria said on a live video that she had three other options turned down, including Miss Cleo. Weird that they would okay Tammy brown when I thought they weren’t supposed to do other queens anymore.

I feel like we all instinctively realized that s14 snatch game was rigged in order for them to do the lip synch smack down episode. That being said, I'm surprised that s14 had the 10th most laughs. The producers were working double time to make the 'worst snatch game ever' out of a decent group performance

On season 5 Alaska's jokes were all taken out (allegedly) because they were too dirty and filthy for TV. Cuz Lady Bunny is such a nasty character Alaska did it very well, that's why only 2 of her lines made it to the final cut, but she was still in the top, so she was cracking everybody up but it was taken all out. Always knew she was a legend.
so Alaska's Lady Bunny had a lot of blue jokes and she ended up in the top but Bosco's Kumbucha joke gets crickets? rigga morris...

I appreciate your hard work, however, I believe that the list would have been more accurate had it been laughs per minute, as that would reflect the fact that the later snatch games are longer so they have an inherent advantage over the earlier snatch games
I don’t mean to take away from you’re analysis because I think you have done a great job breaking this all down but I think what this mostly represents is that Ru fake laughs a lot more in recent seasons than before. The rigorry is so blatant and obvious. I wonder when all this production meddling become too much and Drag Race empire will fall.

Phi Phi (AS2) and Raja (S3) relied on the same schtick too, but those two (and Jaidynn) were FAR more tolerable than that awful, awful Macauley Culkin. My God that was annoying...
Why did you include RPDR, DRUK. DR Down Under and All Stars, but not Canada's Drag Race, DR Holland, DR Italia, DR España and DR Thailand? Jimbo, Lemon, Tormai. Sagittaria and some others had really great performances which should definitely be mentioned. DR España in particular is really strong.
All Stars snatch games have by far been my favorites! 5, 2, then 6. They’re all videos I find myself re-watching when I need a good laugh.
pretty interesting video but i have to say that the type of laugh matters a lot, for instance a big laugh is much more important than a bunch of small chuckles. also editing definitely influences snatch game a lot, probably more than any other challenge. what we see might actually be better or worse than reality, based on whatever narrative the team wanted to show and who they wanted in the bottom.

I personally agree that season 14 is amongst the worst snatch games - the raw number of laughs is a good way of measuring how "successfully" funny the queens were, but I think you also need to account for how hard each joke made Ru laugh, as well as the spread of laughter in ranking.
Having one or two people carrying a whole snatch game makes it harder for other people to get laughs. This isn't just true for snatch game, but comedy in general. Following a standup comic that got no laughs is challenging as you need to get the audience on your side again. I can fully picture a scenario in the room where joke after joke kept falling flat, making it successfully harder to make Ru laugh.
We have to remember that this is all edited, and comedy in the moment is funnier. We've all told a funny story and had to follow up with "ah.. well you probably had to be there"
Really good video and analysis but I think there is more to consider than just the "raw data" of laughs
there should've been some sort of multiplier to account for the length of time the snatch game was edited and aired bec ofc that affects the counting of rupauls laughs. personally i think a good snatch game is when good and terrible queens are obvious on the get go and when the good queens just volley off of each other and play around.
Here’s the thing, one good performance does not a good Snatch Game make. And that’s what happened with 14. Yes, Deja was great, but everything was super cringe.
