Michael Gambon: some know him as Dumbledore but he will always be the Singing Detective to me.
RIP Sir Michael Gambon (1940-2023)
Greatest piece of work of art for television under the point of view of a spaniard living in Spain.
watched it 4 times - Jon Amiel & Kennith Trodd are geniuses = sheer perfection
Got it on DVD. When I watch it back my parents come to mind in the songs which they loved so its hugely deep. The story itself is very complex and nostalgic. Ive just watched it again and the scarecrow/hospital scene made me jump! A Masterpiece the like of which we will never see again .
Rungs! Was a child in England during WW 11. Very nostalgic, This series, with Michael Gambon really broke ground. So much to love - the teacher, the two want-to-be Yanks, the music, from the harmonica to the birdsong-whistling, the atmospheric scenes. Really great stuff!
Oh Yes, I've seen the whole bloody lot of the Singing Detective mini series! I got into a wonderful music genre while watching...
An absolute classic/masterpiece in every respect. I had seen nothing like it. The complex interrelated plot (involving - I think - four storylines) was riveting, yet beautifully and politically incorrectly entertaining!
Just found this after my umpteenth viewing of this amazing drama. Nothing has beaten it since.
Best thing ever broadcast on the silver screen.
This is a fascinating watch. Thank you so much for the upload.
"Am I right or am I not wrong?"
Thanks for posting this. Brilliant.
Yeah, Patrick was truly marvelous as well.
Great interview of the cast of the great singing detective.
It is truly like nothing else, a remarkable series and a formible cast.
The true authentic singing detective
Superb ensemble,Alison Steadman ,Patrick Malahide,Jim Carter Ron Cook,Janet Suzman and the late great Michael Gambon
I was at the all-day screening at NYC's Public Theater that Jon Amiel referred to. It played fine on the Big Screen.
Great series.
Excellent Series I loved it. Cheers.
I loved this movie. Hi from Texas.
I can change my toothpaste, but it's too late in the day to change my style
So sad to see wonderful actors like Michael Gambon, when I say wonderful mean it watch Mobsters, Maigret series, not realize the
true acting gift they possess, truly genius actors Michael Gambon, Dame Maggie Smith,Janet Suzaman, Ian Holm even the late Sir Alec Guinness and many
more are never able to see there own ability
Potter was a genius writer I have seen all of his works and never has there been a writer that understood the human Psychologies. as much as Potter and who had a true altruistic spirit, the man had the ability to enable an audience to empathize with a character almost straight away
Both versions of the Singing Detective are very good however the 1986 one is the definitive version it echoes Potter obviously, as he was involved in the production, however, the main reason is that the movie failed to pick up on the theme of betrayal The protagonist Philip Marlow had felt betrayed by his mother throughout his childhood due to her infidelity towards his father none so much as when she killed herself the same evening they argued and left him in her world i.e. with a grandfather he didn't really know as Philip ,as was Dennis a countrylad lost in the Hammersmith of his mother's family.Philip was then later betrayed by his cheating wife Nicola
Philip himself was also guilty of major betrayal by ruining the life of his mother's lover's son via having him set up for a punishable act. which he wasn't guilty of which later resulted in the aforementioned characters suicide.
Philip then like many writers created an escapists playground via substituting all of the persons he was guilty of betraying and those who had committed indirect acts of betrayal against him for fictional characters written in to his film noir Raymond Chandler type novel.
Mel Gibson tried to tie this concept down but in my opinion failed in comparison to the 1986 version as This was so multilayered, and dreamlike that it felt as if the viewer was sinking deeper into the abyss of Philip Marlow's mind . This was due the fantastic kenith Trodd and John
All the actors are sublime in this production
GAMBON is the king!
A stately performance from each and every one of them.
RIP Michael Gambon
Kenith Trodd producer and John Amiel's direction.
Rip Sir Michael Gambon

The best what?
Not as good as "Pennies from Heaven" or "Lipstick on Your Collar" IMO.
after watching the first one, l could not sit through any more, it bored me to tears, l can see why it was not popular when first released
