Moode Vs. Volumio: Comparing HiFi Music Players

  • A comparison between "Moode Audio" and "Volumio" - two music streaming software products that are absolutely free and can run on a Rasperry Pi 3. When downloaded and written to a microSD card, they turn the Pi into a dedicated audio streamer device that can be connected to an amplifier and speakers. We have been using Volumio for about 6 months, and wanted to try a similar product. On the surface, Moode Audio has more features. However, I found Volumio had a better organized UI, and was more stable on my hardware, so I am sticking with that. Volumio is a professional product with a "free" version, while Moode appears to be entirely community supported. Despite my opinion you might find Moode better if you are into tweaking and jumping into the Linux command line (both products have ssh capability).

    Better Sound- Moode
    Active Crossover Control- Moode (with Camilla)
    DSP- Moode (with Camilla)
    So, if you want a prettier interface, don’t value slightly higher SQ, and don’t build and tune your own gear- Volumio.

      ...so sorry, but i have to disagree - some times ago (but it was this year) i was compared Volumio and Moode on the same hw (2x RPi3 B+ each with Allo Boss, after that i changed both Dacs for HifiBerry Dacs + Pro, music was played via WiFi from Nas, thru headamp to 4 different headphones) and i have totally different opinion - for my ears sounds better Moode - but it is only my own experience and opinion...(i am personally using Volumio as a cheap internet radio (because of support) on RPi1 B with USB Dac)...

      @@tamasbalog5641 It's possible something isn't set correctly with your setup. Moode is favoured by many with decent audio setups. I like Moode and Volumio but Moode edges things when it comes to sound quality.

    Your album art comments are interesting. I found that on the 1200 plus album collection I have Moode picked up 100% of my album art. Using the exact same database Volumio only picked up about 60%. No matter what I tried it could do no better. I’ve used Moode now for over a year. Just tried Volumio’s latest release and there is no improvement on Album art.
    Using Pi 3B+ with Allo Boss 1.2 and I love the sound- not as good as my High end analog system but using the Pi system for whole house audio plus the deck for background and party music.

    Does the Rasberry have digital outs so I can bypass the DAC? I have a standalone DAC in my stereo and want to use it, of course.

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  Před 2 lety

      By default, no, the standard Raspberry Pi board only has a 3.5 inch analog output. However there are add-on boards for a minimal cost such as the HifiBerry Digi+ which would add coax and toslink outputs... I ended up just buying a USB DAC for my old Sansui receiver which works fine with Volumio. Thanks for watching the video!

    My experience: while I was using volumio - no one software upgrade completed successfully. Each time I had to rewrite sd card with new version. Finally, after one upgrade it removed all files from my external usb drive. After that I decided to no longer use volumio. Moode has no such issues but not so user friendly especially in settings. I also found that it sounds not such good as volumio did for me. But acceptable more or less. Thanks for comparison.

      Yes, I can browse folders on the connected Windows file share. So for example if I had a folder on my PC "Artists\Beatles\Remasters\Abbey Road" and I can browse to that folder on Volumio by clicking on "NAS" then following the same structure. Thanks for the comment.

    If you use music files from NAS and "only" use AirPlay for other sound sources, Volumio is far the best.
    I've tried balenaAudio on RPi4B and RPi400 and only got sound out once and then through HDMI. Never on analog using RPi4B :(
    But if you can live with hickups and retries, moOde is great.
    After tinkering with settings, I got it to work with:
    - AirPlay (easy)
    - Bluetooth (enable auto connect)
    - Spotify Connect
    Great! Volumio demands mony just to use Bluetooth. Hmz....

      Same here, RoPieee XL is the bomb! It just chugs along and handles everything I have thrown at it. I tried RoPieeeXL with Roon, and cancelled Roon. Getting tired of paying all of these fees to listen to music, most of which I already own.

    Moode "lost" the thumbnail of a "known" track because you moved it awsy from it's folder. Isn't that the way it is supposed to work?

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  Před 2 lety

      Not necessarily, the thumbnail can come from at least 3 different sources (1) folder.jpg, (2) metadata in the track itself, (3) Internet database lookup based on title/track stored within the track database. In this experiment, used a track in an empty folder with no images to determine if the software would figure out the track's thumbnail, and only Volumio did.. Thanks for watching!

    At some point of the first configuration, it stopped to save the layout template, can't start/stop a song (but still connected), webradio are disappeared.
    spent 2 hourse for nothing (install, format, reinstal, format).

    But -how do they sound?

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  Před 4 měsíci

      They both sound good to my non-audiophile ears. Initially, when I installed Volumio, I could hear distortion or something with the Pi headphone out, so switched to an external DAC from HiFi Berry and it sounds great. Did not try the DAC on Moode. Since making this video, Volumio added an account requirement for using plug-ins, even on the free version, so in the future will probably take a 2nd look at Moode or elsewhere.

  • @electrolaw
    @electrolaw Před 9 měsíci

    I've tried both. Moode sounds better than Volumio. I have all my CD's on a USB stick in ALAC format ripped by iTunes. Moode upgrades the decompressed 16 bit audio to 24 bit before doing any volume adjustments. Volumio does volume adjustments on the original 16 bits and sounds awful (Volumio even warns you that sound quality will be degraded if you use Volumio's volume control). This may not be the case for the paid version of Volumio but I am not willing to try it. (Raspberry PI 3B using USB output to a Cambridge Audio CXA-61 Amplifier)

    As an owner of a high-end audio system, I meticulously attend to every detail of my setup. This meticulous approach led me to the Raspberry Pi, where I discovered that Moode software outperforms all other alternatives. The sound quality, especially with the Sox resampling option set to very high settings, is simply exceptional. I highly recommend everyone to experience it. Remember, a proper setup doesn't just require a power supply; it also demands high-quality ancillaries like network and USB power cables of high-end caliber. The soundstage is profoundly expansive, offering a 3D depth that stretches far and wide. The instruments are rendered with exquisite clarity against a velvety dark background, creating a tangible space between them, embodying the true essence of high-end audio with its rich and immersive qualities.

  • @simons.5442
    @simons.5442 Před 4 hodinami

    In my opinion Volumio is way to much into making you buy into their subscription. I really dislike being constantly forced / reminded to try features that are "sorry subscription only" - ok fine then don't show me that shit to begin with. The UI is way less streamlined then Moode - there's a third contenter to the piCorePlayer (and max2audio) - both being based on LMS should be warned about: LMS has been officially discontinued.
    IF you want to have a working setup in a few months down don't use any of them (I mean no piCorePlayer and no max2audio). Especially when it comes to Online-Radio ...
    TLDR: I can only recommend Moode for a "smooth" experience that just works ... despite its downsides / limitations.
