  • Shiren's back, baby. The Chunsoft-developed roguelike king is on Nintendo Switch in his first brand new adventure since...2010? How did it take this long for Shiren to come back when like every other video game is a roguelike? Mystery Dungeon games are basically how I learned what a roguelike is. My first review for Nintendo World Report was a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game and it scarred me for life. Anyway this one's pretty good. Watch our review.

Shiren and the Torneko games are GOATED. LOOOOOOOOVE the n64 Shiren game the most. 60 bucks is ouchy but honestly the fact that we are even getting this should be celebrated.

    This game deserves 9/10 minimum.

Definitely. Shiren in itself is way too underrated

The switch to 3d is worse. Colors are muted. Textures are blurred. Shadows are poor. If they were going for a low poly style it would have been wise to look towards examples like Chrono Cross. It's textures were low resolution but skillful artists helped it retain a visually vibrant and crisp style.

Truly. Tower of Fortune is one of the most beautiful games. These graphics are a terrible disappointment.

Ahh... I have a soft spot for Mystery Dungeon games, they seem so full of potential to me, like they should be the true modern successors to Rogue, Moria, etc. But as many as I check out, they all leave me disappointed these days. There's so much potential in the format, but seems every game just copies the formula verbatim with a couple of largely inconsequential gimmicks. I don't think I've seen a single title actually try to advance the core systems since Etrian Mystery Dungeon.
As much as I'm always tempted to try out a new Mystery Dungeon, the last nail in the coffin for this one is seeing that the room generation is STILL unchanged. These are the same floor layouts that we've been playing for decades.
After you've tried enough, they all start to feel the exact same, regardless of what animations are on top. When the attacks are mechanically the same, the items are mechanically the same, even the floor layouts are the same, you start to realize Mystery Dungeon games today are a creatively desolate genre of reskins.
Whenever someone finally decides to marry the depth and emergent freedom of true classic Roguelikes with the userfriendliness and intuitive control of Mystery Dungeon, they'll be a rich dev.

Have you tried Crown Trick? I played a bit of it and thought it offered some unique twists on the formula.
