- As the Federal Government asserts its right-of-way for the ambitious Lagos to Calabar coastal highway project, numerous beachfront businesses find themselves on the brink of demolition, with some already having faced the wrecking ball. In this report, ARISE Environment Correspondent Laila Johnson-Salami highlights several of these establishments and examines the impact of the construction of this 700-kilometer road on them.
My own concern is the fact that it takes the government of Nigeria at least a decade to complete projects like this,we will generate better funds by focusing on inter state and across state roads, that apapa port is always congested, other ports can begin to work ,must every thing come through lagos..Even eko Atlantic till today is still not finished, lagos Ibadan, Lagos Benin, Abuja lokoja, these are some road that transport major cargo, till today are bad roads with insecurity concerns, instead of focus inside, the government is building roads worth trillions of naira. Penny wise, pound foolish
This is an interstate road connecting 9 states and will be extended. Projects like these take time, infrastructure doesn’t just appear over night. Eko Atlantic is making huge progress. And is being planned meticulously with all the land already bought. Again these are legacy projects, which are to have impacts in years to come. Stop thinking so small
its obvious, you do not understand my perspective. I never said the coastal road is a bad idea, you nor dey Nigeria?are you not witnessing the high rate of inflation, are you blind to reality? For example ,just in the past 1 month do you know how many tankers has capsized spilling fuel/diesel due to bad roads,
I simply mean that this is not the right time for it,the economy is on life support, instead of government cutting down spending and focus on improving already existing issues, they decide to create a liability worth trillions,a project that wouldn't be beneficial to us at the moment .
So when is the right time?@@odemaj8605
They are not foolish, they know what they are doing...
The business people been displaced to give room for development should be the same people that should be trained to do the job where the development is taking place. God bless NIGERIA🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Are you in Nigeria?
This part of Landmark and Good Beach is supposed to be just just like Venice and Santa Monica Beach. The Pacific Palisade Highway is route off the beaches ⛱️... Oh, what a shame
This is my problem with the nation. We talk about creating an enabling environment for SMEs to thrive. Then same businesses are then plagued with multiple issues from multiple taxation, to insecurity, extremely hard access to loans, poor infrastructure, no power, extortion on roads, and now this. I only hope the affected businesses in this project are duly compensated.
Are we still on this business affection thing?
Haven't they been compensated, why is our media like this.
I don't even know why we are all having this conversation
The coastline and 200m from it belongs to the FG,it is the same everywhere else in the world........... but the FG said they will only be taking 50m of it,yet people are still complaining
I think they should go to court, and if they do,they still won't win because the supreme court has already ruled on it
Same as other countries
200m from the coastline belongs to the home country anywhere in the world!
Since it’s the same anywhere show me where there has been a demolition like this?
In fact I can tell you that in the U.S. and Canada, the government knows that even though beaches are public and the government owns part of it, they know the value of the beach fronts and will never demolish, and if they wanted to they will get sued by property owners on the coast and if they end up winning, they will pay compensation of just not the value, but will factor in future valuation and opportunity cost, that’s how things work in places that have law and order
@@Sweegdeddystop this emotions, the writer you replied to quoted the law for you but you still went ahead to say what you think.
@@sholy4u you didn’t see emotion in my tweet. I’ve told you that even in Florida, all the beaches are owned by the government but I’m telling you that even just for public access, they are suing the government. You need to know how the law works and what Right of Way means. Lol. I develop property in canada and the U.S. I understand this in and out
@Sweegdeddy you are 100% right. I live in Atlanta. The government had to pay about one thousand people to give up there homes to enlarge highway 400. The people got full amount for their property.
You are very correct and understands how real estate works, if you remove sentiments and look at it the other way round , you will see that the government is being very considerate here,
With all the post about demolition on social media is the reason government is requesting for building approval which a lot of people do not have.
Most of them knows about this coastal road from day one and still bought the property, while others did not do due diligence before buying the property.
Before buying property anywhere In the world DUE DILIGENCE is very important.
FG has done Well,!!!
Lagos to Calabar Highway is a must for the greater Good of all Nigerians .
Nigerian Beaches are free for all rich, poor young Old and should not be privatised under any Circumstances!!
The good beach is so dirty. SOL beach was incredibly clean
Jagaban master plans must continue in Lagos.
I'm trying to see why this is propaganda according to most of you.
1. Is no demolition taking place on the proposed lagos-calabar coastal way?
2. Are business not affected?
3. Are people not losing or going to lose their jobs?
4. Did they report that the government refuse to compensate people/businesses with complete/valid documents?
So which part of this is propaganda?
More jobs are been created and it will open the whole coastline for business and economic activities
I am not against development, but I believe this Lagos Calabar coastal road should have started outside the beach area. The government should be encouraging tourism businesses to thrive, not demolishing a revenue generated leisure businesses. I am worried about all these people losing their jobs when there is no good paying jobs in Nigeria. Unemployment will rise and people that are jobless will have to find some way to make money. Hope they will no turn to crime.
How many people actually work at those beaches for goodness sake. And how many of them are earning N6M above as yearly salary?
Owner of the beach encroached the government property in fact he supposed to pay government fine
@@aa-cw8ky it is not the amount of money that they make that will affect anything. It is the fact that they are happy with what they are doing and supporting their family. You will understand that this project will not reach Ondo state in the next 20 years. People should know what is best for the population.
Coming to think about it,Landmark and others would have gone even without the coastal road, that entire area is eko Atlantic second phase l think. Why they decided on that spot knowing fully eko atlantic is coming should be the question really. The coastal highway when completed has the capacity to generate more landmarks and other businesses along the corridor.Thank you.
Thank you and Arise news is here playing sentiment against the government. Coastal road will generate over 500 more landmarks if they are smart. They got land without C of O. Everyone in Nigeria knows you don't own land with C of O, especially in lagos.
Please stop talking trash. Did they steal the land?
@@ojobeeLol 500 Landmarks?? The truth is the black man will believe anything. See you at $1 to N3,000 in less than a year.
Operating words, "when completed." How old is Eko Atlatic project now?
@@Frank-Bediko62 Abi o...the same people who promised us Eko Atlantic are promising you that they will build a coastal road to Calabar and that it will bring lots of investment and economic activity. I weep for our people.
If the Section 1: Phase 1 of this highway (the Lagos stretch of 47km or so) is done by June 2027, I will give out 100k (inflation adjusted). Forget this thing
Why is Arise News making a fuss about nothing. The coastal highway will produce more beach resorts and create far more jobs.
When though?
6 billion, why the lies? I'm in construction and even with the current price of things, that's just way off.
I'm sad about this development but let's become honest in Nigeria
Abeg leave that girl make she dey lie.
I believe they sand fill all those areas and we all know that can be very expensive obviously NOT 6billion
Stop investing in Lagos. You people never listen
Go back to your desert Igbo land
Lagos doesn't want lawless, greedy and unpatriotic investors like you and your brothers.
All this just to contruct a highway?
Wow!
if the businesses are set up illegally, and the owners are so much guilty that they cannot go to the court to prove they are right. Theys are illegal business on that path
@@ayenia2736 do you understand the meaning of illegality?
Was landmark beach built illegally?
Mumu,.wetin you paint for head don block your brain. You no fit get common sense again. You think say na ordinary highway. Mugu.
@@yummydishes2279Go and find out who owns the beach or coastal front and then you will know wether landmark has any right to build there.
@@yummydishes2279To show how much you even lack common sense, the lady being interviewed does ot even work for landmark beach. She works for anyiehr beach business on same coastal front. What type of a person are you?
I think Arise news should ask all this people who gave them permission for this structures from Lagos State Government because this coastal road has been on the original plan of Lagos State more than 20yrs ago The connection they thought they had and the money they had used to bribe their way for illegal permits are what you are seeing today
The beach wasn't on the original plan. Yall should stop yapping trash.
@@jewelofnashville1726wether the beach was on the original plan or not, the coastal line to 200 meters from it belongs to the FG. So no one has no right whatsoever to build anything there.
As old as you are.
This documentary is uncalled for and it is absolutely rubbish.
Lol 😂. What are you selling to have 250 staff working where you only sell drinks and asun for people. The hilton hotel in Abuja does not even have 250 staff. All of you are 419.
Igbos are fake
😂 they are padding their budgets for compensation to claim more than they actually lost.
How do you come here to claim you do not know the master plan of lagos in relation to that piece of land? You guys are too dubious in propagandas. Till this moment, none of these people you feature on your channel( business men affected) has sued the government to show evidence of rightful claims of those pieces of land with evidence of a respect for the initial plan made public by the government since over 20years ago. Your news house is turning to a PR hub, and that is crazy
If you listened carefully, you’ll hear her say they initially knew about the plan for the coastal highway but didn’t know it would be this soon. However, it was only going to cut across the car park and beach house but wouldn’t affect the main business. Sadly, the Govt new alignment is going to affect the main business area.
Leave them make them dey play. They knkw very well that they are in the wrong a d that is why not one single person has taken the government to court over this development.
@@fatfarmers7360 Which court? In Nigeria? SMH
@@peculiarjames5516 that claim is a stupid dirty lie. the fact she knew of a masterplan was enough to request for that actual masterplan. if the plan shew they are right, then , no need for a TV PR, go to court. These guys are fraudsters. In reasonable countries, this TV station would be sued long time ago. Their commentators are so judgemental that you could show evidence of abuse of freedom of speech in them. the government would never sue them, but there would have been some independent fighter to had sued them
@@noanalyst the same court where most people had gone to claim their lands with the right documents
Nobody sold you a beach . You got there illegally
