    The 84-94 XJ/Cherokee shaft(95+ XJ shafts are clocked 90 degrees different) works just fine on ALL GM trucks that have the steering column extending through the firewall with both joints being under the hood. For the US OBS trucks in 95 GM changed steering columns when they added in the air bag, it is a much shorter column using a 2 piece steering shaft with the upper joint now being under the dash inside the cab, so installing the XJ shaft is much more work in them as you have to cut the lower joint off, and graft it onto the stock 95+ shaft. Installing the XJ shaft in place of the lower shaft on a 95+ WILL result in a loss of steering going down the road as it adds in a 3rd joint in the middle of the shaft that will be un-supported.

      The modification for the pinch bolt is only needed on 95-98 trucks, as he stated, they have a different steering column.

    I just bought the one from Cunningham machine and its exactly the same as that with no modifications. Just bolts right in and i think it was only like $80. Come to find out most of my slack on my 95 Silverado was the pitman arm needing replaced after i replaced both it helps tremendously.

    Question. What size drill bit to drill out the spot welds? Are you going through the shaft?

    The part in the link looks different then the one your using? And the reviews state it won’t even fit the Jeep style you talk about? Is it possible the link is the wrong one?

    Do you think this would work with a 94 K1500 4x4? Not sure if the steering shaft length is the same.

    Just did the shaft on my 92 2wd WT 213,000 mile red Cheyenne, definitely did tighten up the steering but now get the hydraulic sound coming up through the shaft from the steering box when applying steering tension to the wheel left or right. Perhaps that is an indication with an issue with the steering drive box but it did not do it with the old style rag joint. Also, I found one that already telescoped for less than 50$ on ebay, no fuss at all . Would actually prefer to have a new rag joint shaft but can't justify dropping up the extra 200$ plus that would be the difference in price. Good video thanks!

      @CarportCustoms  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks. Im sure the sound is because the new shaft doesn't have the rubber joint to isolate the noise.

      You can replace the rag-joint for $20, no need to replace the whole shaft.... if the stock setup is what you'd prefer. The rag-joint is a common wear item and is replaceable independently of the shaft. GM used the same rag-joint for like 30+ years on every truck, up to the point where they did away with it in '99 on half-tons and '00 on 3/4 ton and up... I believe.

      @@johnny0454Actually I was more concerned with the upper joint on the shaft, boot had been torn for some time and quite a bit of play so decided the whole shaft should be swapped out for something new, thanks for the heads up though.

    • @THEFERMANATOR

      @@CarportCustoms there is no difference between 2 & 4 wheel drive. 88-94 uses a 1 piece steering shaft, 95+ uses a 2 piece steering shaft. 94 and older had the steering column extend through the firewall with the end of the column being under the brake booster, 95+ has a much shorter steering column with the end of the column being inside the cab under the dash with the upper joint being there. Installing the XJ shaft in a 95+ gives you 3 joints in the steering shaft with the center joint being unsupported, and WILL result in a loss in steering while driving. There is a way to install the u-joint from an XJ shaft onto a 95+ shaft, but it involves cutting & welding to make it solid.
