  • Before it goes on sale, I had to check and final tune my SONY TCK-620 3 head cassette deck, I wanted to bring it to perfect normal working condition, but something was bothering me... Maybe it was a head azimuth alignment, or bad belt ? Let's find out

Excellent demonstration. What makes CZcams worthwhile. Can I please ask you advice on what I might have done wrong. Although it is on the TCK-590, there is good overlap between the mechanisms. I changed the two belts on the TCK-590. After reassembling, however, the cassette holder does not open, although I could hear a few-seconds of motor whine in the background. The cassette holder - on releasing the retaining lever with power off - is stuck a quarter of the way in the opening arc. I suspect I disturbed the alignment of some gears, and I need to disassemble again. In the mean time, you advice would be invaluable and much appreciated. Thank you.

When I reassembled my Sony TC-K620, I had a very similar problem. It turned out I had routed the head wires incorrectly, which created a physical barrier to the moving parts moving freely. After the wires exit from where the pinch roller assembly is, they must be looped away from the whole mechanism before being bunched again at the wire holder on the corner of the mechanism. When i looked carefully, I could see the original folds in the wires. It taught me to take photos of even the simple things before starting the job.

@@topgrain Thank you very much. This is a step I am likely to have not realised and it may well be the explanation. The deck and cassette drive unit are still not assembles (I had given up on getting it right), but I shall now try again thanks to your advice.

@@topgrainhi, check out that cog wheel, sometimes grey colour. If it is not in the stop position the deck will not work properly, also door won't open.
When I change belts now, I mark the position of that gear wheel with the lever with a pen in stop position. Also check before that the mechanism is in stop position. It can be very annoying to find the right position, you have to disassemble it few times. Hope this will help you. There are many vids about changing a belt, but nobody mentioned this problem. Good luck
