    The most amazing thing to me about 1984 was how George Orwell predicted that people would change/redefine words to control arguments and truths. Exactly what is happening now.

      It's not a new phenomenon, language has always changed and people have been trying to use and abuse that as long as we have tried to communicate. It's just much easier to things like this because it sounds sla lot more profound and scary. People in power have often tried to change language to suit their personal ambitions for thousands of years, it was actually a lot more common in times when societies were a lot more isolated.

      @@demo3456 not sure if you're talking about what I said, but even if it's what op said: how is that hero worship? It seems to me that what gardener is highlighting is that someone with a perspective that has experienced true danger would likely not be easily scared of something unless it could potentially be truly threatening. That doesn't seem to be hero worship, it's more like taking notice of the opinion of someone who has experienced a broader range of danger.
      I get your gripe though. I personally know many people who have served, and let's just say the last thing I would do is hold them in reverence. They deserve respect for serving, sure, but like everything else people take things too far.

      Or anyway not enough people do at any given time. I have a degree in German and so I know a little bit more about how a normal society can change into a dictatorship. When I tried to warn people half a year ago here in Belgium as our rights were being taken away from us, my colleagues thought I was crazy. Luckily I have some Russian friends here who at least understood me. By now more and more people are seeing that what is happening is not in our best interest, and people are starting get more organized so we can stand up and claim back our freedom.

    • @cyanlos01
      @cyanlos01 Před 3 lety

      @@ingevankeirsbilck9601 Also important to understand that even Nazi Germany didn't emerge from a vacuum; everything sets precedence to everything else, a cause and effect, as it were. The treaty and even Marxist influence caused the emergence of Weimar. The chaos of Weimar caused the loss of faith in liberal ideals. That loss of faith caused the need for radical order, which in turn caused the rise of an oppressive and genocidal regime.
      Similarly, what's happening in the USA right now too has a very long line of causality. And if one wants to ensure history doesn't repeat itself, it becomes essential to understand the nature of that causality to steer it to a different direction.
      Unfortunately, not everybody is capable of this, and nobody can understand it to its fullest, no matter how much they convince themselves that they do -- often in an attempt to change what they perceive to be a repeat of history, they will ironically fulfil the prophecy (see: in an attempt to fight fascists, you become a fascist). Which is why the best thing an individual can do, as Jocko puts it, is to create contingencies and find means to safegaurd ourselves against the inevitability.
      Right now, for instance, everyone around the world can now see at what direction America may be heading in, and they're starting to build ways to circumvent themselves having to be negatively affected by it. Such as programmers researching new ways towards decentralization, and lawmakers proposing new laws, etc.

It's the only solution I think actually can work if and only if there's mass pressure put on politicians at the local and state level to make it happen. Don't get me wrong, I do believe it's going to happen one way or another. Approximately half the population thinks the government is illegitimate and that they're unrepresented, and is openly antagonistic towards them. Hard to argue with the last point at least. Add in a bad economy and a powder keg of a social climate? I just think at this point, seperation is the solution that will cause the least amount of bloodshed.

You know as well as I do though that the will to take hard action is not there on a scale that matters. People are too complacent, ignorant and comfortable. The will to seperate though, is already there, and is a hell of a lot more palatable. We should also all take charge of our own lives and try to be leaders in our own right. But you also know that we will need someone with a large following to take a stand and shock the normies and give a chance for anything effective to manifest. Perhaps. Though maybe some who had never read the book themselves might find it nice that they aren’t the only ones. Plus it kind of makes jocko get more into detail because he has to fully explain it to his co-host and in turn the audience.

    Ya know with what's going on in the U.S. today I'm really glad there is Jocko and Echo Charles and others like them who are level headed and patriotic to say the least that have the hind sight of engagement in battle/ serious situations and could definitely (lead) a revolutionary/militia with surety and excellence!!

    What has me concerned is the number of people I've seen online discounting the message of the 1984 and simply chalking it up to fiction.

    I love freedom and 🇺🇸, and I love freedom of speech and I am agains the big tech imposition of individual freedoms. But as a black man something that has worried me in the past and I find it difficult to reconcile is the fact that American history is marred by people who in the same breath uttering freedom, where open and encouraged the enslavement and total lack freedom of others. I know it’s in the past and we have to move on but this evokes a certain degree of mistrust that is concerning . Watch their actions not theirs words. God bless America..

    • @ericb2409
      @ericb2409 Před 2 lety

      I appreciate your perspective and your mistrust. This country faced this very tension you speak of in the 1860s and fought a bloody Civil War to move the realization of human liberty forward. Then 100 years later, Dr. King & other civil rights leaders fought another kind of war to move America forward again, closer to its professed ideals. We as a nation need to keep moving towards freedom, not regress away from it into a totalitarian state. The federal government, big tech, the media, big pharma, academia, etc. are all working against our unalienable rights. We the people are being divided from one another along every conceivable fault line. Divide and conquer. We must unite behind the cause of liberty in spite of our differences.

    Jocko, your internal thoughts are correct. Everyone is feeling it but most need a leader. As I have written you before, you have the gravitas to fix things. I understand you not want to. Just don't wait to long. The other side is making huge strides.if you want to stay on the back lines, I understand. I will take the point if need.
