  • I recently revisited a church that I converted nearly 20 years ago, at the time this was the biggest project that I had attempted for myself, It was hard graft and many late days and most weekends but it was so worth while!!

Looks good quality job. The industry has been good to you. Always wanted to build my own house. Never had the money. Over 40 years in now and Covid is putting the final nail in my work coffin. Nearly broke and soon will be it will be time to stop. Then who will employ an old bloke in his 60's until I get to the new retirement age of 67. The building game is hard. It is nice to see someone make the effort and reap the rewards. I never got to that stage.

I'm the same as that ! I could never keep working full-time; always had money draining gaps, and soon to be broke myself, also in my 60's, and paying through the nose in a private rented tiny house!

@@thetessellater9163 Sucks doesn't it. I have mostly had consistent work but am too soft. I reckon I have built nearly as much for nothing as I have for wages. the while you are here jobs that you never get paid for the extras. To houses renovated for friends for next to nothing that they sell for a lovely profit and buy the next one and you don't get a look in. And stupidly I am still doing it. I was never meant to be rich.

Hi Robin I have one as well a former chapel and Sunday school. Started 1997 on the Sunday school and 2010 on the chapel. I also did all the work myself and have also a large steels in the floor that sit on the original Victorian Columbs and timber ring beam. I had a massive heart attack in 2008 but was determined to see the chapel done and took me 7 years and at present still live in it. I had the original organ left behind which parts went to keep up Truro cathedral organ and The original pulpit which acts as a half landing that I built stairs up to and on to the first floor. I kept the feel of the chapel as you enter from the front door but with all the benefits of modern living.

Your real gift seems to be that you have just as much vision and eye for design as an arty farty architect, but knowing that you've got to achieve stops the stupidity that most real architects succumb to.
