HELLO and welcome to our channel! This is our movie musical tier list. What ranking would you change? As always, these are just our opinions! No shade to any of the mentioned performers/productions...except maybe russel crowe.

You could make a tier list of movies that were turned into musicals like : mean girls, heathers, beetlejuice, school of rock, pretty woman, matilda, amelie, elf, big fish, waitress and more
Matilda was a book first
Rocky Horror (Picture) Show
the musical is not based of the movie though
@@fishy_squad4112 true lol
Hairspray
I’m I the only one surprise they didn’t talk about the Rent movie musical adaptation
I mean I was waiting till the last second :|
Same wtf
Yeah also hairspray! One of the best movie musicals for me
Yes! Also, what about Chicago?!
They didnt include a few I thought would be on there
Hairspray is my favorite movie musical. I like it even more than the stage production.
it’s 20x better than the stage production
Oh my goodness you are absolutely right. Hairspray is the SUPERIOR movie musical imo
Tea it's amazing
The stage and movie are equally awesome for me!
I was HEARTBROKEN that they didn't include Hairspray in the video
You should make a part 2 with
-chaigco
-hairspray
-litte shop of horrors
-grease
-mama Mia here we go again
- a star is born
-the prom
- all of the Annie’s
- dream girls
- pitch perfects
Great Video ❤️
Thank you all for so many likes you guys are the best!!! Alos Iḿ sorry I forgot rent but yes definitely.
RENT
The Last Five Years
Sweeney Todd
Rocky Horror
Willy Wonka
Bye Bye Birdie
Fiddler on the Roof
Sound of Music
Cabaret
Singing in the Rain
Hedwig And The Angry Inch is awesome too and probably the truest to source material as you can get.
If you stick with just last 20 to 30 years, can also add controversial ones like Grease 2, Funny Lady, etc. But if you get into true classics, you start adding stellar ones like Victor/Victoria, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Gigi, Bye Bye Birdie, Cabaret, A Chorus Line, . . . shoot even Xanadu!
And Rent
And Nine
The problem with The Greatest Showman for me is how every song had the same sweeping grandness to it. It became really stale really quickly. You need to have an ebb and a flow to the music in a musical. If every song is sweeping and inspirational, it doesn’t work.
agree , but this whole list celebrate musicals where artistry is nearly absent , where the music was the least authentic ... the whole list is joke and they are both the greatest clowns
I think the one song that wasn't that was the bar song (edit for clarification: I mean the one where Hugh is trying to by out Zac Efron into working at his circus, that one was fun)
@@MrLuis85698 In the Heights was on here tho?
@@afoolishfopdoodle3284 I dont know
Can y’all do a Disney Musical tear list? I think that would be really cool (especially since Ryan SLAYED as Hans) it would be nice to have intel from the actual business. Also, there are some amazing Disney musicals, and some not as good but still great Disney musicals. I’d love to hear your thoughts
When Sam said that La La Land is not a movie that gives her Theatre vibes, it reminded me of HOW BAD “The Princess and The Frog” gives me theatre vibes, I mean, I NEED IT right now, they NEED to find a way to make frogs sing without make it absolutely ridiculous 😭
it is a musical tho?
“ABBA is perfect” TEA
“Meryl Streep is perfect” TEA
“Amanda Seyfried-“ TEA
"Standing Ovation" PAIN
Gotta disagree with the Les Mis call. The “capturing vocals live” aspects would be good if they made the actors follow the music rather than the other way around. There is a direct line from this to Cats
they changed A LOT of melods
I completely agree. That video by Sideways that talked about how much they butchered the music was very a great source in why I didn’t really like it.
ABSOLUTELY
@@lazergecko1346 The worst part had to be when they revealed that they sang for ten hours while being dehydrated
They almost made Hugh Jackman lose his voice irreparably.
The movie is decent and earns a lot more knowing the shitty job the Producers and others made.
Also the actors do a fantastic job while the producers did things that could have really hurt them.
anddd the snake earring makes a comback
I personally love the Into The Woods adaptation! I was expecting it to go into the “choices were made” tier because of the ending and the songs ya know? But I’m happy for the into the woods love we’re receiving today
Same! I've seen that movie at least 5 times lol. I don't get why people hate on it so much. Yes, it's not the stage version, but it's good in its own right.
Yes, but Meryl Street = Standing Ovation or better
Please do a part two. Y’all missed some quintessential movie musicals imo: Chicago, little shop of horrors, dream girls, hairspray, grease, the producers.
Tick tick boom as well!!
Here’s the thing. I actually think la la land worked because it was so “movie-like” as you guys said. I find that when movie musicals try to capture theatre it just never works. It always ends up feeling cheesier than necessary and it doesn’t hit the way a live musical theatre performance does. So I think leaning into the more movie aspect actually works. I liked how it felt like the music fit the movie and not them trying to fit the movie into the music (if that makes sense). I don’t want to see it as a stage adaptation either but I think that’s a good thing. It means they chose the right medium.
It’s always been so weird to me how I can love musical theatre so much yet have such a distaste for movie musicals. The only other one I genuinely loved was in the heights which did a good job of representing theatre in a movie form.
Cats was the first musical I watched. It was the old version that was recorded on a stage and it’s 100% better than the movie that came out. I refused to watch the newer one because it would ruin cats for me. Definitely recommend watching the older version
I hate that they said the actual musical was trash, like dude it’s one of the hardest musicals dance wise, if you get vocal damage from memory it’s because you can’t sing it or don’t have the range for it. A ton of GOOD singers can do it
@@darkhorse4122 memory isn’t even the only good song. People forget that
that’s how I felt when I saw Phantom of the Opera when I was 14 as well. I was underwhelmed and a little disappointed because I was looking forward
to this spectacular movie. but then I saw it on stage for my graduation present and was blown away . So much better. love the movie, but I prefer the staged musical.
How is y’all’s hair always perfect?
Have a great day!
Define "perfect"
Don't get me wrong I normally love his hair but today ... Yaiks 🤢
@@anthonyobeid6576 heyyyy maybe we should keep our stuff to ourselves
Into the Woods and Mamma Mia above West Side Story and Phantom of the Opera is downright insane.
West side story yes phantom no. The phantom film ruins the musical mainly because of the casting
You’ve got so many more movie musicals left to go. I feel a part 2 and 3 are on the way!!
I’m a relatively new viewer, so you might’ve already done this, but I think it would be neat if you made a tier list of Disney musicals (either the stage productions or the movies). I would definitely watch both of those videos potentially multiple times.
We need a video where Ryan shares Broadway secrets and Sam and all of us react to them!
The Sound of Music is my number 1! It’s one of my favorite movies, not just movie musicals. Followed by 1776, which feels the closest to a live production without actually being a pro-shot. Would definitely love to see further parts to this video to get your opinions on other movie musicals.
Petition for Sam and Ryan to do a reaction on the Les Miserables viedo essay by Sideways - I'd love to hear their insight
Can people keep liking this so they’ll see it
In The Heights is my favourite adaptation of a musical until they make a movie out of Book of Mormon
I LOVE UR PFP
@@leaht4555 thank you
“The movie and the music don’t line up” EXACTLY that’s what I always say about The Greatest Showman!!
I was genuinely concerned when Ryan first said that In the Heights was vocal damage. That movie is just 👩🏽🍳 💋 🤌🏻
I love that they both are wearing their hair as buns.
I didn't know loving les mis was unpopular cause I fricken LOVE it so much like yesss. Also in the heights is so good but once I did some research there were some things I wish they included from the broadway version.
Les Mis is the worst musical next to Hamilton IMO. Overhyped over done garbage.
@@TheIndigoSystem i think you need to rethink that opinion
@@Flo-kv8kv I think you need to stop telling me what I should like. This is why everyone hates the Hamilton fandom you guys are pushy, aggressive, rude and condescending.
@@TheIndigoSystem agree , but this whole list celebrate musicals where artistry is nearly absent , where the music was the least authentic ... the whole list is joke and they are both the greatest clowns
@@TheIndigoSystem I enjoyed Hamilton , but just mehhh, relatively to the classic greats Hamilton is nothing , just a political propaganda with background music
I hope we get a part 2 with Chicago and the last five years!
I'm only 3 minutes in but Ryan calmly saying "Look at her she's wicked" had me laughing.
Edit: Oh! You two like Into The Woods! I understand it's issues, but I love that movie!
Very disappointed that Rent wasn't on this list as it's my favorite movie musical
Hugh Jackman
Zendaya
✨Troy Bolton✨
Gotta get your head in the game
I would love to see a part 2 with movie musicals like Chicago and rent. Also love you guys and your content!
Every time there’s content with those spacebuns it adds 7.5 years to my life
I feel the exact opposite about Moulin Rouge! The musical is one of my all time favorites, but I really didn’t love the movie.
I'm waitting for September musicals movies - Cinderella, Everybody's talking about Jamie and Dear Evan Hansen. Proshots Come from away (Apple TV+) and Diana (Netflix) too.
the matching fits and hair literally made my day. y’all are angelic
i love into the woods… anna kendrick was in it
I stand by that The Greatest Show manages to sound like a jukebox musical without even being a jukebox musical
I'd like to see a classics Movie musical tier list with Sound of Music, Carousel, Paint your Wagon, Chorus Line, etc.
Your fits are giving me very much Taylor Swift, like Sam's cardigan (Folklore) and Ryan's snake earrings ( Reputation) *chefs kiss*
sam and ryan (taylor's version)
Not trying to start a fight here, but I think that the Greatest Showman is awesome, just not as a movie musical. I wouldn’t consider it as being part of that genre, it’s more of a movie… with music. As a movie, it’s incredible.
I’d have to disagree for the exact opposite reason. I think the movie on its own was pretty bad. The music was nice enough to listen to but as a movie it was already a mediocre concept with barely any interesting plot (also romanticizing a pretty shittt dude). The transitions into the music are what made it so laughably bad to me. I’m not trying to start a fight either tho so if you enjoyed it then that’s cool lol XD
Tgs is one of the most basic uninspired one ever. The fact that they romanticized a real life villain and depicted him to be a dreamer with savior issues is more than cringey. Songs with bad disney level depth, throwaway concepts, contrived and convoluted plotline. And how do you explain that opera singer belting a pop song lol
corn dog, as I said, not trying to start a fight 😂
I agree. Similar to La La Land the cinematography is what makes it a stand out.
Yeah, I think the music is absolutely stunning and empowering an amazing. However, I think the movie on its own falls flat. I think a lot of story line is missing and if there was no music, I think there would’ve needed to be more death and backstory and explanations in my opinion. Again, I listen to the music nonstop tho lol.
ok but the fits are so fire
I agree this needs a part 2. Would love to see how you rank The Last Five Years and even a holiday movie musical like White Christmas!
I love the hair so much!! ♥️ also love the matching outfits COUPLE GOALS
I WAS SO SCARED WHEN YOU STARTED TALKING ABOUT IN THE HEIGHTS! I thought you were going to say you hated it (although I then remembered you said you absolutely adored it a few videos back) and I was having a baby heart attack.
Ryan is such a musical theatre kid like he can also turn anything into a song or reference its great
*Defying Gravity-* Phantom of The Opera, Into The Woods
*Standing Ovation-* Les Misérables, West Side Story
*Choices Were Made-* The Greatest Showman, Mama Mia, Moulin Rouge
*Flat-* In the Heights, La La Land
*Vocal Damage-* Cats
7:42 the way he just randomly bursts out " ohhahoh!!" HAD MY DYING LAUGHING
i’m super super excited for dear evan hanson to come out! the trailer is absolutely amazing and of course so many people already knows what happens cause duh the musical but the MUSIC IS AMAZING AMD GETS ME IN MY FEELS AND JUST YES 😩
les mis defies gravity. it’s a comfort movie for me. i love the visuals and the vocals. not russell crowe. but i adore the movie, it’s my favorite musical and favorite movie. the casting is ON POINT
oh yes i love the greatest showman starring hugh jackman, zendaya and troy bolton
wolverine and rocky were stunning
You guys should totally do a part 2 once Wicked is out with movies like Dear Evan Hansen, Rent, The Last Five Years, West Side Story (2021) etc
Or do a ranking of proshot musicals like Newsies (2017) Hamilton, Heathers, Little Women, Come From Away, etc
I enjoyed this video! Personally, I think you need to do a part 2. There are so many other movie musicals to discuss! I was surprised you didn’t mention Rent. I’m curious to hear what you think. 🧐
I'm absolutely loving how sam has two lower buns and Ryan has 2 space-buns ish, you're matching and it looks sooo cool!
OMG!!! I LOVE your both so much! I was so happy to hear you loved In The Heights because I played the kid with the braids in that film!
You could also do a live musical tier list! (grease live, peter pan live, the sound of music etc.) love this video btw
I just watched In The Heights because you guys mentioned it in another video. It was sooooo good! I wasn't expecting to cry so hard. A bit of an emotional rollercoaster! Also I get why people think the Phantom of the Opera movie is not great but I love it so much.
That is EXACTLY what I think about La La Land and Greatest Showman too. I've always said they're movie musicals curated to make normies think they like musical theatre. I also love the movie adaptation of Into The Woods :))))
I just like Emma Stone and went with her character tbh
Happy Heathers Day!! ❤️💚💛💙
I had the EXACT same experience with footloose!! My high school did it when I was in 8th grade and I watched 3/4 of the performances (multiple of which I was alone) and it inspired me to stay in theatre in high school, I am so sad I never got to be in it but it has such a special place in my heart
hey baes i’m super hyped bcos i got cast off my first audition for our fall play!!! we’re doing sleepy hollow and i’m playing gossip girl #2!!! it’s the biggest role i have ever played and i’m nervous but excited too!! love ur channel sam and ryan u guys are vv iconic
I love when Ryan is like “you know what the Masquerade number is supposed to be right?!” Same. Same. Same. Emmy Rossum also just wasntttttt Christine for me. Also. Not enough time in the opera house for me.
I I am in desperate need of a part two to this video because there are so many movie musicals that were not talked about that really should have been talked about pleeeaaasseeeee
ryan’s earring is GORGEOUS
Sam looks like Princess Leia a little bit.
THEIR HAIR IS MATCHING AAAAAA
Wow. Moulin Rouge in Defying Gravity? On my tier list, composed prior to the release of Cats, Moulin Rouge falls in Vocal Damage. And I would have to think seriously about elevating it to Flat when Cats came out . . . and I’m still not sure it would move up.
Yes and the Broadway adaptation of moulin rouge is acc sooo gd
I love how much you love Mamma Mia, it’s one of my all times favourites and all theatre friends shit on it !!
i heckin love your matching hair
Ok but where was Chicago?
we need a part 2 with rent, newsies, and hairspray!
I love Moulin Rouge too! It’s honestly one of my favorite movies and even though I knew Satine was going to die, I still cried, and I almost never cry when I watch movies.
No Singing in the Rain? That's the gold standard for movie musicals for me. I don't see why La La Land leaning into the movie aspect demotes it. That was what made it work. It wasn't a stage performance retroactively adapted for screen, it was designed to take full advantage of being a movie from the jump. It's not a movie version of a musical, it's a movie that is a musical.
For Into the Woods, I honestly like it a lot, but there's really no reason to watch it over the original Broadway version. The visuals are really nice, but that's not a straight improvement either, because you lose the charm and humor that comes from some of lo-fi props and whatnot.
True they did only moderny ones
This NEEDS a part 2!
Here are my suggestions (and ranks):
- The Prom (Standing O)
- Dear Evan Hansen (Choices)
- (yes it’s a tv show but) Schmigadoon (Standing O)
- (another tv show) HSMTMTS (Choices)
- Matilda (Defying Gravity)
- tick, tick… BOOM! (Defying Gravity)
- (the new) West Side Story (haven’t seen)
- 13 (Flat)
I have a complicated relationship with the greatest showman. I absolutely loved it when it first came out, then it became over saturated and I couldn’t stand it. some months went by I saw it again and it made me cry. I guess I think it’s pretty good, but as a musical theatre fan I also hated how it was used to be like the front face of musicals. also I can’t stand listening to this is me anymore.
I feel the same
You almost had me with the In The Heights slander 😂😂
You should do which is better the movie, or the musical that came from the movie, think mean girls, legally blonde, waitress, lion king, etc...
Yoooo I’m so glad we have virtually the same takes!
I also was very put off by the dissonance between the setting of the Greatest Showman and the pop music of it.
And Mamma Mia! Is one of my favorite movie musicals, it gives me hope that movie musicals have the potential to be good lol even though a lot of people crap on that movie, it’s so quotable and fun!
I’m so excited for this after ryan totally left us on the stream yesterday
For me, West Side Story is at the top. 🥰 (probably because of how much I love Bernardo and Anita lol 🤣😍)
I saw in the heights in theater THREE times and weeped every time. It’s perfect
i love this channel so much, one of my favorite❤️
I tried to explain what y'all said about the greatest showman to my non musical theater friends, and they fought me so hard on it, like the music doesn't align with the plot like a musical soundtrack should. It was a movie soundtrack at most, but it just didn't make sense together.
Our production of Mamma Mia opens next week and I’m so excited
I love you guys and your videos so much! 💗😃 However how is Footloose a movie musical?
Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, and Les Mis are my favorites for sure!
Loved it. Please make a classic movie musical tier list, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland. And/Or what about filmed stage musicals tier list, I already know what would be my top shows there.
Sam, I am 100% in agreement with you about In the Heights. I hadn’t seen the show or listened to the cast album before, so it was a completely fresh introduction to the show. I was wildly impressed on every point. 💥
I would like discuss that Anne Hathaway actually shaved her head during the filming of Les Miserables. Iconic
Loved this! Would be so curious on your ranking of "The Prom" and even "Mamma Mia 2" Here We Go Again"
I'm a massive musical theatre fan, and La La Land is a favourite movie musical of mine because I think that feeling of having a beautiful plot you can be emotionally invested in COUPLED with good music and visually appealing set and costume conveyed the right feel of theatre to an audience who would otherwise not see anything theatre-esque- another day of sun is perfect and also things like city of stars and the end scene when they're walking from set to set like they're onstage in the alternate reality.
I love two things the Sam and Ryan channel and musicals
This is everything I’ve ever wanted and I haven’t even watched it
Love to hear your opinions on Rent, The Producers, Reefer Madness, Oliver, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, How To Succeed
The fact that I got a hadestown ad when I clicked on this video, just made it the vibe for the day and I 100000% agree, mama Mia deserves a standing ovation, but the second one tho… flat. 🤌 *chefs kiss*
You gotta do a part two for the rest that you missed!!
And also…like can you include the live TV adaptations of shows that got em? The (i think 4) that got a live tv spot
For me La la land is a perfect work of art. But it's hard to consider it a musical.
Okay but the REASON I loved the Phantom film was because I used the film to teach myself the E5 flat to then hit the E6 when I was 17. I’m 22 now and I can confirm I LOVE the Broadway show so much better 💚🎭
Ryan, your point about Hollywood distorting broadway musicals is on point. There are a few exceptions, like In the Heights, but I’d take a Pro Shot of the performance on broadway over a Hollywood production any day!
I was waiting to hear your opinion about the Last Five Years movie!
Sam: (trying to explain something or telling a story)
Ryan: tea…..tea…….tea
